ALEXANDER NASMYTH (SCOTTISH 1758 - 1840), ITALIAN LANDSCAPE AT DUSK oil on canvas, signedframedimage size 68cm x 96cm, overall size 92cm x 119cm Provenance: Private German Country House Collection. Christies, Glasgow stencil mark and label versoNote: By the 1800s Alexander Nasmyth's skill as a landscape painter was such that he was confident working on an ambitious scale, yet due to the numerous demands on his time relatively few pictures survive from this period. Between 1790 and 1810 he was remarkably industrious: in addition to supporting his large young family, he was setting up an art school where he taught classes and was also working on an ever-expanding portfolio of theatrical, engineering and landscape design projects. Nasmyth came from a line of architect-builders, and as a youth had been trained to take over the family business by his father but opted to pursue painting instead. It was not until later in life that he began to take on architectural and landscape-design commissions, embodying the Italian ideal of the architetto-pittore. James Nasmyth wrote: ‘My father was much employed in assisting the noblemen and landed gentry in improving the landscape appearance of their estates, especially when seen from their mansion windows. His fine taste, and his love of natural scenery gave him great advantages in this respect… he designed alterations of the old buildings so as to preserve their romantic features, and at the same time to fit them for all the requirements of modern domestic life.’ (ed. S. Smiles James Nasmyth, Engineer: An Autobiography,London, 1883, pp.36-37)

A recent participant in the Mille Miglia, a capable, well equipped European-spec MGA Roadster ideal for events and touring rallies.Officially launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1955, the MG A's looks must have come as quite a shock to MG aficionados who had become accustomed to the perpendicular pre-war look of the company's sports cars. It was a complete departure in styling and its beautiful streamlined bodywork was as curvaceous and attractive as anything from Italy or France. The modern look required a modern engine and, with the old XPAG unit getting a touch wheezy, the shiny new 'B-Series', recently debuted in the new Magnette saloon, seemed to fit the bill. The appeal of the MG A was quite staggering, in the first full year of production in 1956, more than 13,000 cars were built, which far exceeded the entire production achieved over a four year period with the TF.Offered here at the Silverstone Festival, one of Europe’s most prestigious historic motorsport events, is this smartly presented, European-spec, MG A 1500 Roadster. It has been specially prepared with the intention of participating in historic regularity rallies with a strong focus on reliability and driveability. Over the past few years the MG A has successfully completed Gran Premio Nuvlari 2017 & 2019, Summer Marathon 2018, Winter Marathon 2018 & 2019, Coppa Franco Mazzotti 2021 and most recently the Mille Miglia 2021.It's an original European-spec, left-hand drive export car manufactured in 1956 and delivered new to Italy prior to being registered there in January 1957 and is classically finished in Old English White with a red leather interior, black hood and sits on a set of premium Turrino wire wheels. The cabin is fully equipped for the task with a state of the art Brantz set up including a WPT001 electronic precision stopwatch and a Brantz International 2S Pro Rally Meter with a remote. It sports a Vic Derrington steering wheel, correctly-mounted seat belts and has recently been treated to a new set of alloy side-screensThe MG is currently UK-registered and is accompanied by a history file containing its current FIVA Passport ready for transfer, the V5C, its MM Registro and various invoices for maintenance and parts over the years. Most recently the car has been maintained and supported by the highly regarded Noci Motoclassic in Italy. With many brilliantly organised events here in the UK and over in Europe, this MG A is absolutely on-the-button and ready to participate. HERO have some challenging and enjoyable events for which this car is perfectly suited or perhaps just enjoy open top motoring in this lovely British classic.SpecificationMake: MGModel: MGA ROADSTERYear: 1956Chassis Number: HDR3317380Registration Number: 862 UYVTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Left-hand DriveMake: LHDInterior Colour: RedClick here for more details and images

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890), Oil Painting Signed (lower left) Image Size: 26 3/4 x 18 7/8 inches (68cm x 48cm) Vincent van Gogh, in full Vincent Willem van Gogh, (born March 30, 1853, Zundert, Netherlands-died July 29, 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris, France), Dutch painter, generally considered the greatest after Rembrandt van Rijn, and one of the greatest of the Post-Impressionists. The striking colour, emphatic brushwork, and contoured forms of his work powerfully influenced the current of Expressionism in modern art. Van Gogh's art became astoundingly popular after his death, especially in the late 20th century, when his work sold for record-breaking sums at auctions around the world and was featured in blockbuster touring exhibitions. In part because of his extensive published letters, van Gogh has also been mythologized in the popular imagination as the quintessential tortured artist. He first started painting with oil and then moved on to ink, searching for a way to fuse Eastern and Western art. His works bring together the aesthetics of traditional Chinese ink and modern Western art, pioneering the unique "Wu studio style" and endowing us with a wealth of great classics. λ&nbspJOHN CYRIL HARRISON (BRITISH 1898-1985) MATURE AND IMMATURE RINGED PLOVERS Watercolour Signed (lower right) 18.5 x 30.5cm (7¼ x 12 in.)Provenance: By descent to The Hon. Mrs James Tennant Please Note: This lot was likely purchased by a family member of Oskar Reinhart and then passed down by descent Please note measurements do not include the frame unless otherwise stated. Oskar Reinhart was born in Winterthur, Switzerland in 1885. His father Theodor Reinhart (1849-1919) worked as a textile merchant running Volkart Brothers, which was founded by his wife's family, and facilitated the trade of cotton across the continent mainly from India. Theodor was an active art collector and devoted to supporting the careers of promising artists. By the age of 39 Oskar, inspired by his father, retired from the family firm to focus on building his already established art collection. Reinhart travelled across Europe visiting museums and private collectors devoting his time to art patronage. Reinhart purchased villa Am Römerholz in his hometown which was to become his own private gallery to house his collection as well as his private residence. In 1940 Reinhart donated the Austrian, German and Swiss works of art from his collection to the town of Winterthur which was housed from 1951 in the Museum Oskar Reinhart, now within the Kunst Museum including pieces by Caspar David Friedrich and Adolph Menzel. The rest of the collection was bequeathed to the Swiss Confederation including his home in 1958 and this opened to the public in 1970 and is still available to visit today. The original bequest included over five hundred paintings and several thousand drawings.Reinhart was particularly drawn to French Impressionists and he enjoyed mixing old masters with modern masters arranging displays in order of form and colour rather than period. It was the focus on colour and light used by the Impressionists that sparked Reinharts' interest. Reinhart was conscious of seeking talent and artists with potential in order to support and encourage their careers. The collection on display at Am Römerholz includes works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent Van Gogh, Edouard Manet, Paul Cezanne and Alfred Sisley amongst a selection of old masters such as Pieter Brughel the Elder.   Condition Report: Unexamined out of glazed frame. Some very light spots of staining scattered throughout.  Please note Dreweatts is not liable for damage to frames.  Condition Report Disclaimer

She attained a degree in Geography at Glasgow University and went on to train as a teacher. However, she had always painted and her talent was strongly encouraged by her uncle the distinguished Iain Macnab RE ROI (1890 - 1967) who persuaded Sheila to come to London and train under him. Iain Macnab had been Principal at Heatherley's Art School (1925 - 1940) and then went on to be founding Principal of the hugely influential Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Sheila's London influences and Glasgow School foundations evolved into a distinctive and individual style. She usually worked "en plein air" and her work is semi-abstract. She focused mainly on landscape where her training as a geographer, allowed her to use her understanding of land formation, the delicate balance of the seasons and the interaction between Man and the environment. Her uncle's concept of "rhythm" is evident in Sheila's work and remained a constant throughout her career. She painted in Scotland, Spain. France and Italy and exhibited widely, especially in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and Newcastle. Her work appeared frequently at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute, Paisley Art Institute annual exhibitions and at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (London). She won numerous awards and prizes over a long and distinguished career. In recent times we have offered a growing number of Sheila Macmillan's paintings with several achieving more than £1000.
