Elizabeth Rivers (1903-1964) BULLY BOYS oil on board with artist's estate studio label on reverse Estate of the artist;Estate of Judge Desmond Windle 'Elizabeth Rivers Exhibition', Frederick Gallery, Dublin, October 1996, no. 34 The Art Collection of Desmond P.H. Windle (1933-2014) Whyte’s are proud to present the collection of pictures and sculpture formed by Desmond Windle, a distinguished lawyer and art lover. Desmond’s life-long interest in art developed as a young solicitor in 1950s Dublin, inspired by his aunt’s (Molly Matthews) love of art. A regular attendee at galleries and studios, he collected modern and contemporary Irish art for over 60 years. He supported many young emerging artists and, in the early days, acquired some paintings by way of barter in exchange for legal advice to the frequently impecunious artists being threatened with eviction. Invariably their tenancy was secured. He never stopped collecting and decorated all available wall space in his home with a diverse collection of works and, thereafter, most available floor space. Favourites included works by Patrick Collins, John Behan, Michael Kane, Gerald Davis, Felim Egan, Robert Ballagh, Charles Brady, Charles Harper, George Campbell, Bernadette Madden and Seán McSweeney. He was in the French capital as a student when The Artist’sMother (Musée d’Orsay, Paris) was shown at the Salon, and subsequent visits to Whistler’s studio would have introduced him to a cavalcade of ‘arrangements’ and ‘harmonies’ in which black inevitably played a part. But this fascination did not derive exclusively from the American: it was there in the wonderful Prado portraits by Velazquez that Lavery copied in 1892. There was thus a powerful aesthetic impetus driving the Irish artist’s orchestration of blacks in Mrs Tottie’s portrait in 1905 (lot 41).Mary Barron Tottie (née Blake) was the daughter of Captain Francis Barron Blake of the US Navy and grand-daughter of Commodore George S Blake, Superintendent of the US Naval Academy at the time of the American Civil War. She grew up in Boston. Her husband, William Harald Tottie, son of a Swedish Consul had, after studying at Cambridge University, become a merchant banker in Shanghai. It is not known how they met. Their sons, Oscar William and Eric Harald Tottie were killed in the Great War on the same day in 1914, and thereafter Mary and her husband threw themselves into supporting the war effort. The Winkfield District Magazine tells of her organising local women in the production of bandages and mosquito nets.Ten years earlier, when Lavery’s portrait practice was booming and he was painting European aristocrats and American actresses, he was occasionally criticised for not seeing beyond the surface, the ‘exquisite screen’ of a ‘sweet face’. Mrs Tottie’s portraitcontradicts this assumption. She addresses the spectator directly. She is not coy, nor is there a false allure in the way she returns our gaze. She is every inch a character from Henry James – serious, forceful, honest, determined, and while not devoid of charm,a woman who is not play-acting.Prof. Kenneth McConkeyAugust 20171 Selwyn Brinton, ‘Recent Paintings by John Lavery RSA, RHA’, The Studio, vol XLV, December 1908, p. 178. 44 by 34in. Toner;Private collection 'Pictures of Life in the West of Ireland', Leinster Hall, Dublin,10-29 May 1909, no. 22 Pyle, Hilary, Jack B. Yeats: His watercolours Drawings and Pastels, Irish Academic Press, Dublin, 1993, no. 666, p.159 An old mariner in a heavy coat, red scarf and dark brown cap strides away from the quayside. He has a distinctive gait, with hunched shoulders, hands deep in his pockets and nimble legs, suggesting his years moving about on-board ship. The distinctive combination of robust greens and purples found in many of Yeats' early watercolours is evident here. The shadow cast on the man's shoulders is a deep green while tones of pink suggest the foggy atmosphere of the waterside and the ethereal forms of the waterfront buildings. The painting is described in the catalogue of the posthumous sale of paintings and sculpture belonging to John Quinn, the Irish American lawyer and collector of Modernist art and literature. Lot 305 of the 1927 American Art Association catalogue states 'Figure of an old seafaring man, wearing a pea-jacket and muffler, sauntering from the quay, enveloped in a dull mist through which the masts of a brig faintly gleam in the background'. Quinn was the owner of several important works by Jack Yeats and was responsible for the artist's participation in the famous Armory Show of Modern art in New York in 1913. He was also a close friend and mentor of Jack's father, John Butler Yeats, who moved to the United States in 1908, and of his brother W.B. Yeats. Quinn bought Sea Fog in Dublin on a brief visit to the city in the summer of 1909 after it was included in a one-man show of Jack's work at the Leinster Hall. Quinn was a great admirer of the younger Yeats. In 1904, after Jack and his wife stayed in New York, Quinn wrote, 'He is one of the most simple and unaffected kind-hearted genuine and sincere men I have ever met and I like him more than I can tell'. [1]The exhibition of 1909 in which Sea Fog was included was a critical success. Constance Markievicz commented on the quality of the work shown in it in an article published in the Gaelic American that year. Jack's work, she wrote, 'with its intense originality and life-likeness, seems to appeal to us with almost a shock, and to demand its just due, … as something real and new….'.[2] Yeats and Cottie had travelled in the west of Ireland the previous year, staying mainly in Sligo, where the idea for Sea Fog is likely to have originated. The figure of the old sea dog striding up the town ultimately stems from the childhood fascination that Yeats had for the seafaring life. This began with his journeys along the Garavogue in the ships belonging to his grandparents and his uncles and his great regard for the wisdom of the pilot men, stevedores and gangers that worked on the Sligo quays. 1. Patrick Hennessy RHA (1915-1980) CAVALCADE c.1974 oil on canvas signed lower left; inscribed on David Hendriks Gallery label on reverse Northern Bank collection;Private collection RHA, Dublin, 1974, no. 103 The present painting was one of four works shown by Patrick Hennessy at the RHA in 1974. That year - though based in Morocco - Hennessy exhibited, care of his agent, David Hendriks, at Oireachtas and a joint show with his partner Henry Robertson Craig at the Cork Arts Society Gallery and in Dublin with his gallerist. Cavalcade is a tour de force exhibition painting and it employs several devices which have become synonymous with the artist. The viewer is invited into the scene by the figure of a young boy riding bare back on a white horse which enters the canvas from the right as the penultimate rider in this procession. His gaze is captivating and the viewer is encouraged to join the parade and follow the imprints in the sand of the party further ahead. The intensity of the heat is felt in the cloudless sky with only a little relief provided by a breeze felt in the swish of the horses tails. This picture is powerful in both subject and execution and it is not surprising the artist revisited the same theme in his 1976 submission to the RHA (Sunset Cavalcade, exhibition no. 175). Patrick Hennessy was the subject of a major retrospective - Patrick Hennessy: De Profundis - at the Irish Museum of Modern Art from 24 March to 24 July 2016. This show formed part of their Modern Irish Masters series, a strand of programming that looks at the post war period to shed light on artists who have been critically neglected; but also to reflect on what their work might mean to audiences today. 24.50 by 34.25in. Brian Maguire (b.1951) LONG SAD DRAWING, 1979 oil, ink and pencil on paper signed, titled and date [Dec 79] lower right Estate of Judge Desmond Windle The Art Collection of Desmond P.H. Hughie O'Donoghue (b.1953) DUTIFUL SON, 2007/8 oil on panel incorporating transparent photographic component signed, titled and dated on reverse James Hyman Gallery, London; Private collection;Whyte's, 10 October 2011, lot 122;Whence purchased by the present owner In May 2009 the Irish Museum of Modern Art celebrated his work with, ‘Hughie O’Donoghue: Recent Paintings and Selected Works from the American Ireland Fund Donation’. This was a major exhibition of twenty-seven works by the artist who has now a substantial body of work in the Irish national collection. Since the mid 1980s O’Donoghue has been exhibiting widely in prominent solo and group shows; especially successfully with the Kerlin Gallery, Dublin, James Hyman Gallery, London among many others. He is represented by the prestigious Marlborough Gallery, London who were Francis Bacon’s dealers among other masters of the 20th century.Artist’s Notes II, 2007Hughie O'Donoghue, Lost Histories, Imagined Realities, Gemeente Museum, Den Haag, Holland, 2008, p.79-81”In recent years I have increasingly used photography as a component of the picture making process. The photographic element has a skin-like quality, which is physically integrated into the layered surface of the oil paint. In order to achieve the kind of density that I want, it is necessary to build the surface in a traditional way by superimposing layers of oil paint and exploiting the transparency and opacity of the medium. The photographic elements are trapped within these layers. I photographed the characters in some of the paintings in various scenarios on the land around the studio where I work in Ireland. One of the recurring themes of my work is memory and how it is constructed. I am interesting, in both individual memory and the larger cultural memory of societies. Memory is rarely accurate, but in my experience, it is invariable true, in that it represents how we feel about things rather than what we know. In this way, it is like the art of painting." 24 by 25in. (61 by 63.5cm)

Original vintage advertising poster card issued by Nord Express to promote their Calais - Bruxelles - Pullman Express route. Lithograph card printed on both sides by Hachard & Cie, Paris. France, 1927. Size: 14.7x10.4cm. Good condition, bumps and small tears on margins, minor loss on bottom right margin, fold on top right corner. Iconic design by Adolphe Mouron Cassandre created in 1927. It shows a stylised image of a train speeding towards the horizon, with a cloud of smoke and a blue sky above it. The visual language owes much to Cubism, but belongs to the Art Deco in its imagery and the unmistakable modernity of the subject matter. The image communicates the glamour of travel in simple lines. Cassandre, pseudonym of Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron (1901- 1968) was a French painter, commercial poster artist, and typeface designer. He was born Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron in Kharkiv, Ukraine, to French parents. As a young man, Cassandre moved to Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and at the Académie Julian. The popularity of posters as advertising afforded him an opportunity to work for a Parisian printing house. Inspired by cubism as well as surrealism, he earned a reputation with works such as Bûcheron (Woodcutter), a poster created for a cabinetmaker that won first prize at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. Cassandre became successful enough that with the help of partners he was able to set up his own advertising agency called Alliance Graphique, serving a wide variety of clients during the 1930s. He is perhaps best known for his posters advertising travel, for clients such as the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. His creations for the Dubonnet wine company were among the first posters designed in a manner that allowed them to be seen by occupants in moving vehicles. His posters are memorable for their innovative graphic solutions and their frequent denotations to such painters as Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso. In addition, he taught graphic design at the École des Arts Décoratifs and then at the École d'Art Graphique. With typography an important part of poster design, the company created several new typeface styles. Cassandre developed Bifur in 1929, the sans serif Acier Noir in 1935, and in 1937 an all-purpose font called Peignot. In 1936, his works were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City which led to commissions from Harper's Bazaar to do cover designs.
