* ANDREW HAY, MINERS IN THE LIFT oil on canvas, signed 120cm x 120cm Framed. Note: Having started to paint at the age of 39, within a year the People's Palace Museum, Glasgow had purchased ten paintings and have given Hay his first solo exhibition. Since then his works have been included in numerous public and private collections. His work deals with both narrative and nature, sometimes subverting one or the other in order to advance his artistic practise. His insistence on invention, freedom and risk affirms continuity in his aesthetic spirit. He uses a network of codes, symbols and expressive techniques which play off his collective memory and familiarity of everyday objects and culture from his childhood and juxtaposes them with present day reality. In so doing he embodies them with a new philosophical discourse. Andrew’s work now features in many significant public and private collections and is in the permanent collections of Glasgow's Kelvingrove, Gallery of Modern Art and The People's Palace.

Le Pho (1907-2001). Oil on canvas depicting two women among plants. Signed along the lower left. Provenance: Wally Findlay Galleries.Biography:Le Pho was born in Vietnam in 1907. As a child, he was constantly finding opportunities to make art. As the son of the Viceroy of Tonkin, he had the opportunity to study art at the newly established Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi under Victor Tardieu (1870-1937), a well-respected French painter. In 1931, he traveled to France with Tardieu, where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris on a scholarship. He then traveled to Italy to do research, also visiting the Netherlands and Belgium in his tour of Europe. After returning to Vietnam, Le Pho became a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi. During his professorship, he decided to continue his education by making trips to China to study and make art. While in China, he studied traditional Chinese sculpture, visited museums, and even had the opportunity to paint the Emperor and Empress. In 1937, he was sent to Paris to work on the Indochina Pavilion at the International Exposition of Art and Technology in Modern Life. He stayed in France after the Exposition, where he found great success as an artist. His first solo exhibition was in 1938, and soon after, his work began getting international exposure. His works were widely distributed, particularly in the United States because of an exclusive contract he signed in 1964 with Wally Findlay Galleries, an American company. Despite his expatriate status, Le Pho kept close ties to his homeland. He was active in the Vietnamese community in Paris, and worked with Vietnamese dignitaries and intellectuals to advocate for better treatment of the colonized Vietnamese people. His ties to his homeland are also evident in his subject matter. His paintings featured women and flowers, which he depicted in ways influenced by Vietnamese traditions and aesthetics. This painting is an excellent example of these major themes of Le Pho’s work. The present work was painted during his “Findlay Period,†which is associated with his representation by Wally Findlay Galleries from 1963 to his death in 2001. During this stylistic period, Le Pho drew inspiration from his life-long admiration for Henri Matisse and created bright and colorful paintings. The present work features an idyllic scene with several green leafy plants scattered throughout the composition. Two women are standing in the center with another barely visible to the left. The main figure wears a soft coral colored robe that beautifully echos the other woman's shawl. She wears a cerulean blue robe wonderfully accenting the rug beneath her. The artist’s choice of colors skillfully creates a harmonious composition that helps draw the viewer into the scene.Dimensions: Sight; height: 38 1/2 in x width: 25 in. Framed; height: 46 1/2 in x width: 33 in. Condition: Good condition, very faint hairline cracks, measuring approximately 1/4 inch, to the white paint along the upper right quadrant.

Lot 1900

DORA CARRINGTON (1893-1932) CIRCUS PERFORMERS Oil, ink and silver foil on glass, within a plain maple-veneered frame 38 x 29cm. Provenance. By descent from Lettice Kirkpatrick, to whom the picture was given as a wedding present in 1927 by Gerald Brenan, author and friend of the artist. Gerald Brenan (1894-1987), writer and Hispanist, is chiefly known for The Spanish Labyrinth, a historical work on the background to the Spanish Civil War and for South From Granada:Seven Years In An Andalusian Village. In 1919 he was introduced to members of the Bloomsbury Group and, despite moving to Spain, his contacts with the group continued, partly owing to his particular friendship with Ralph Partridge and Partridge's first wife, Dora Carrington, with whom Brenan had an affair. After working on a Spanish landscape, Dora wrote to Brenan: " I feel my picture is going to be one of the most beautiful in the world - is it partly because you blessed it with that magic one night?". The menage between Carrington, Partridge and Lytton Strachey is well documented. Carrington's "tinseled pictures" were often presented as gifts to friends. These designs were created by creating an outline in dark inks on the back of the glass pane, filling in the outline with textured foil paper and then covering the image with a blend of opaque and transparent paints. This fine balance of art and craft was much admired by art historian Jane Hill who noted Carrington's instinctive feel for "how much glass to leave uncovered and how much work the silver will do." Traditional `tinsel prints` were originally 15th-Century woodcuts decorated with tiny metal or quartz fragments after being hand-coloured. The popularity was revived with a similarly sparkling decoration applied to mainly theatrical subjects in the Regency era. In Carrington's works, there is an intentional and rather quaintly Victorian association with 19th-Century greeting cards. The unusual semi-mosaic quality shows an embrace of techniques that are at once modern and nostalgic.

Lot 1963

ALFRED WALLIS (1855-1942) FRENCH FISHIN BOAT [sic] Inscribed with title, oil on card 17.5 x 29.5cm approx. Provenance: Collection of Mr and Mrs Christopher Mason, London, to whom given by their close friend Alan Rowe who had purchased it for £1000 from Ann Stokes, second wife of the artist, critic and writer Adrian Stokes, November 1973. Christopher Mason (1928-2018) was married to the artist Joanna Carrington (1931-2003), niece of Dora Carrington. He was a film maker, writer and painter and made a film about Alfred Wallis as well as two about the Bloomsbury Group. Mason met Jim Ede in 1955 through a musician friend called Etienne Amyot. At that time, Ede was Wallis's most devoted collector. At Ede's meticulously furnished home, Les Charlottieres near Blois on the River Loire, Mason saw scores of works by Wallis for the first time. The two men remained friends and Ede was a vital and valued contributor to Mason's short film about Wallis in 1973, entitled Alfred Wallis - Artist and Mariner. Joanna Carrington had long coveted the picture and wrote in her diary, "I must say I am glad Alan has got it. It is such a beautiful one - and being selfish about it - apart from owning it myself, the next best thing as it does mean feasting one's eyes every time we go there." ___________________________________________________________________________________ In this painting inscribed "French Fishing Boat", Wallis recalls one of the French boats that would visit Cornwall in the summer months. French crabbers from Brittany first came from Camaret in 1902 to fish the Scillies and the north coast of Cornwall. Using crab-pots they fished for crayfish, lobster and crab and their vessels had wet wells to keep the shellfish alive till they returned to Brittany. These boats became a feature of the summer scene in St Ives, Newquay and Newlyn, and this practice continued until the mid-1960s. The early French crabbers were sail vessels and were gaff-rigged, but in this and one other painting Wallis remembers lug-sailed vessels. Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood came to St Ives on a day visit in 1928. Their 'discovery' of Wallis has been described as a watershed in the history of modern art. They found in Wallis "An art, simple, direct, honest…unencumbered by theory, completely true to itself."(Oxford Times; Ben Nicholson). Wallis's work was to influence both artists. After the initial visit, Ben and Winifred Nicholson and Christopher Wood came to stay in St Ives; the Nicholsons stayed for three weeks and Wood for three months. Wood wrote to the Nicholsons: "Admiral Wallis I often see" and "more and more influence de Wallis, not a bad master though." Wallis's work acted as a liberating force on Wood who would also have seen the French crabbers in St Ives and later painted fishing boats in Brittany during visits in 1928 and 1930 shortly before his untimely death in 1930. Ben Nicholson received bundles of paintings posted to him by Wallis and introduced the work to a small group of collectors including Jim Ede. Wallis also sent bundles of paintings to Ede, then junior curator at the Tate Gallery, and the work he purchased formed the basis of the present day Tate and Kettle's Yard, Cambridge collections. Robert Jones 2018 Robert Jones is the author of Alfred Wallis Artist and Mariner (3rd edition, 2018). We are grateful to Robert Jones for his assistance with the cataloguing of this picture. Quotations are reproduced by kind permission of the executor of the estates of the late Christopher Mason & the late Joanna Carrington. ++ Slight wear at edges, bumped at corners; a little retouching; needs a light clean
