I have over the years drawn and painted this Stag many times. It sits defiant at the beach edge and drawing or painting it is a way of somehow situating myself in relation to this marvellous rock. These watercolour sketches are often used later in my studio, to jog my memory, while working on larger pieces of the same subject.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. Inhabited space transcends geometrical space' Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space My practice looks at the vacant space, the hollow shell, the skin of things. I am drawn to psychologically ambiguous objects and spaces that are empty but charged and marked by the passage of people and time. I work with large format film, cameraless photography, and other creative techniques to seize the heart of my subjects, to capture their presence and aura. I'm interested in psychology, memory, and the body. My subjects have an intimate, physical relationship to the body and have been handled and inhabited, they are inanimate but loaded, exposing the affecting remnants of past lives. Resonating Spaces depicts a series of singular locations which have been inhabited but are vacant in the photograph, allowing the viewer in. Confessionals I and II are included in this series. The camera becomes an instrument for resurrecting archaic and obsolete objects, turning them into something new, allowing us to observe them and re-evaluate their cultural, political and sentimental meaning. I want my stark and silent photographs to act as introspective spaces, mirrors for self-examination which trigger our deeper thoughts and feelings, fears and desires. My work deals with absence. When something is missing, we unwittingly fill in the gaps, occupying the space with our own lived experience and imagination, drawing from memories and emotions which may be hidden or suppressed. The space becomes a reflection of ourselves, a chance to examine our own mind, identity, and feelings.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. Anne-Marie Butlin Bramble Flowers, 2023 Watercolour on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About I live in Crouch End, North London, and paint full-time in my garden studio. All my work is essentially an attempt to make a beautiful, uplifting image. In both my garden and still life paintings I hope to convey the character of different flowers and the unique feeling they can create in a space; the strong structures and often the sheer joyfulness of their appearance. I try to capture the sense of calm that flowers can give us; a chance to contemplate and meditate, and remember our connection with the natural world. Portrait/figure paintings are likewise an attempt to capture quiet transitory moments; recording a moment of childhood or the unique shape of a body or face before it changes forever. My work combines strong traditional technical skill with quite a modern sensibility and I find they appeal to a wide range of people; working just as well in a simple modern interior as in a period home. Timothy Gatenby Untitled, 2023 Oil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Tim Gatenby's popular culture parodies often combining classical with modern imagery to create humorous paintings. His work uses examines art histories' relationship with the Internet world we now inhabit. There is a twisted nostalgia to Gatenby's paintings. His work subverts not only through subject matter, but also through technique. Gatenby distorts familiar characters, typically drawn as brightly-coloured and crisp cartoons, by blurring lines between classical painting and modern imagery. As with a lot of appropriation art his work inherently says something about its time as it reflects collective imagery back onto society, reanalysing information in a sort of mirror. Often combining deconstructed cartoon characters with dark humour, his images reflect the pressures of consumerism and modern societal tendency towards over indulgence. Fast food is an ever present theme in Gatenby's work and is used as a vehicle to convey the easiness of modern life. The radical notion that never has becoming obese required less effort. Despite the darkness found in the various styles and themes explored in Gatenby's work, there are often playful, idiosyncratic moments that crop up, as if for his own amusement as much as the viewer's. A joke or pun can be found through a depicted object seen out of place, or an expectation subverted by an oddity, giving the work a comedic touch of the absurd to cleverly contrast the heaviness found elsewhere. Education He studied a BA in film at Queen Mary University before undertaking the rigorous atelier programme at Charles Cecil Studios, Florence. Portraits commissioned by HRH Prince of Wales (King Charles) by leading UK portrait painters. 2014 Art Volta. Basel, Switzerland. Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork The painting shows and is named after the 'House of Reeves', an independent furniture store in Croydon south London, run by the same family for over 150 years London. On 8th of August 2011, during the London riots, the store was burnt down. In this painting I used a found photograph showing the store on fire, but replacing the arsonists and rioters with flying saucers, and AT-St Walkers/Tie-Fighters from Star Wars. This work is coupled with another image I did in 2020, made during the Black Lives Matter protests, in which the rioters are shown as they are, and the authorities replaced with Star Wars AT-AT walkers. These kinds of themes are generally very unusual in my work, but give me an outlet for looking at social issues and my interest in sci-fi - creating images that combine cinema, surrealism and social realism.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. (Romuald Hazoumé, The Global African Project (Museum of Arts and Design, New York, 17 novembre 2010-15 mai 2011)). BibliographieLisa Aronson et John S. Weber, Environment and Object, Recent African Art, (DelMonico Books: The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, 2011), pp. 107-110.Arguably humorous to a degree, the political commentary which Romuald Hazoumé provides in works such as the present lot observes how the modern world, consumerism and finance have negatively impacted the history of his home country. Hazoumé reimagines traditional African masks, using objects such as jerry oil cans to construct a new face that highlight economic and environmental struggles as a result to consumerism. In the artist's statement for his exhibition, The Global African Project, Hazoumé outlined his themes of 'excessive environmental destruction ' and 'toxic consequences' of such scenarios (Romuald Hazoumé, The Global African Project (Museum of Arts and Design, New York, November 17, 2010-May 15 2011)). These statements were made in relation to the case study of the British Petroleum Deepwater Horizon spill that occurred off the American Gulf Coast in April 2010. Hazoumè's masks, in particular, are emblematic pieces of his work. Crafted from cut, assembled, and meticulously redesigned plastic jerrycans, these masks suggest a form of cultural hybridity, combining traditional African elements with contemporary patterns and references to globalization. They embody the meeting point between the past and the present, tradition and modernity, while questioning notions of identity and cultural diversity in an ever-changing world. The use of the yellow jerrycan in the creation of Romuald Hazoumè's mask raises profound questions about consumer society, pollution, and the impact of industrialization. Hazoumè appropriates this mundane object and transforms it into a striking work of art that challenges the viewer and invites deep reflection on contemporary issues. This artwork is a powerful example of his engaged artistic approach and his ability to transcend ordinary materials to create extraordinary works of art. * PAT DOUTHWAITE (SCOTTISH 1939 - 2002), UNTITLED pastel on papermounted, framed and under glassimage size 75cm x 54cm, overall size 97cm x 77cmProvenance: The Corrymella Scott Gallery.Note: "She should no longer be seen as an exotic maverick but acknowledged as one of the true originals of Scottish art." A concluding comment on Pat Douthwaite’s 1993 solo exhibition, made by The Scotsman’s art critic Edward Gage. The ‘maverick’ label is often attached to Douthwaite to encompass a variety of the artist’s more striking traits: her troubled personality, the restless, nomadic lifestyle that took her across the world in search of subjects and meaning and her complete disregard for anything that did not further the development of her artwork, despite it making her a difficult figure to manage and work with. A good example is an incident in which she broke into a house and stole back one of her paintings from a buyer whom she did not consider worthy of owning her work. This demanding, uncompromising commitment and all-encompassing focus on her work paid off. She developed and sustained a distinctive, signature style characterised by raw feeling and idiosyncratic lines. Douthwaite was fascinated by historical heroines including Greek deities, Mary Queen of Scots and the aviator Amy Johnson and often depicted them as well as herself. Her images of women remain the most powerful and popular of her works, truly encapsulating the pain and suffering women can experience and endure. This exploration of suffering means there is a violence in the work, yet Douthwaite often manages to retain fun, playful touches in their execution. Born in Glasgow in 1934, Douthwaite’s first exposure to creative expression was in the form of dance classes at the dancing school run by Margaret Morris, the bohemian partner of the Scottish Colourist John Duncan Fergusson. She eventually discontinued dancing and decided, aged twenty-four and with no artistic training, to become a painter. Douthwaite showed her work to Fergusson, who recognised her talent and encouraged her endeavours, though he suggested she avoid art school, as he had done. Thus, both Morris and Fergusson had a major impact on Douthwaite’s creative endeavours. Douthwaite’s ever-present wanderlust quickly took over and she left Glasgow to join an artistic community within William Crozier’s house in East Anglia. An informal artistic training in itself, she was surrounded by fellow artists including Robert Colquhoun, Robert MacBryde and Crozier himself. In her lifetime, her work was recognised and championed by key figures in the Scottish art world; including Richard Demarco, who mounted her first major exhibition in Scotland in 1967; Douglas Hall, the former Director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the artist and critic Edward Gage. Following her death, her popularity continues to increase as ever more collectors are drawn to her distinctive, expressive style and tales of her mysterious, maverick personality. The prestigious Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) have long promoted Pat Douthwaite's work and her most recent solo show "Pat Douthwaite, On The Edge" was staged by the gallery between 4th and 27th February 2021.

In 1987, he won a scholarship to further his study at the acclaimed Hospitalfield Summer School, Arbroath, and it was during that time that he began to depict the dramatic coastline and imposing mountain ranges and spectacular waterfalls that he encountered in his travels throughout Scotland. He obtained a scholarship to go study engraving and painting in Italy and subsequently in Paris. Assadour is well-known as a master of contemporary engraving and yet he has also produced a rich and prolific oeuvre of temperas on paper and oils on canvas. The latter are rare and sought-after as Assadour executed very few paintings on canvas. He participated in many exhibitions throughout Europe, Korea, Japan and Lebanon, and his work has been displayed in international art fairs as well as in retrospective shows in Museums in Germany and Italy. Assadour managed to develop his own artistic style by finding inspiration in two art movement, the Bauhaus' Constructivism and the Parisian Surrealism.''Assadour the secret, prince of encryption, with a tempered yet passionate nature, appears as the most meticulous master of images, which he interlocks, untangles, clots, separates again and finally fuses into one same substance. His layout is ingeniously inscrutable yet nothing has been randomly placed. Everything is so precise in this chaos which is very well thought out, that Assadour does not seem to destroy all the codes but rather substitutes them with his own.' - Gérard XurgueraThis lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Over the span of a 40-year career, Azzawi has explored subjects ranging from the political to the ancient history of Iraq, through painting, sculpture, prints, drawings, and book art. Azzawi started his artistic career in 1964, after graduating from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad and completing a degree in archaeology from Baghdad University in 1962. His studies of ancient civilizations and Iraqi heritage had a profound impact on his art, and a key objective in the early formation of his artistic style was to link the visual culture of the past to the present. In 1969, Azzawi formed the New Vision Group (al-Ru'yya al-Jadidah), uniting fellow artists ideologically and culturally as opposed to stylistically. The group's manifesto, Towards a New Vision, highlighted an association between art and revolution, and sought to transcend the notion of a 'local style'—coined by the Baghdad Modern Art Group—by broadening the parameters of local culture to include the entire Arab world. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: AR WAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.W Lot is located in the Bonhams Warehouse and will only be available for collection from this location. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Michel Basbous (Lebanon 1921-1981)Tête voilée (Veiled Head) bronze signed, dated and numbered '2/8', number 2 from an edition of 8, executed in 197735.5 x 8.5 x 5.5 cm Footnotes:Provenance:Property from the Artist's EstateBorn in 1921, in Rachana precisely. Michel Basbous, son of a priest of a tiny village in the north of Lebanon was amongst the first students to enroll at the newly founded 'Academie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts'(ALBA) in 1945 and one of its first graduates. Three years on, and after his first public success in the capital, he left to Paris in 1950 were he joined the atelier of Zadkine. His master there, Gaumont, asked him the purpose of his stay in Paris, and Basbous answered, deadpan, 'To learn sculpture'. Gaumont replied: 'Lebanon, the Mediterranean, Phoenicia, Assyria, Babel, Egypt... You have them all. What are you doing here? Go back to your country.' Ultimately, Basbous would obey this sage stricture. But not before having accomplished much in Paris. Upon his return in 1956, and after a short stay in Beirut, he took the surprising decision to move back to his native village Rachana. Back then, Rachana was not even accessible by asphalted roads. ' It was a new experience for me. As I did not have a workshop in the village, I placed my works on the side of the road and started working in the open air.'Michel spared no efforts to nurture a public interested in the arts, so he created the festival of Rachana in 1960, mixing theatre, music, poetry with sculpture and painting, in the hope of motivating people to interact with different kinds of cultural activities. He invited famous figures like César, Jack Lang, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Hasan Fathi and Adonis just to name a few. He fought fiercely to disseminate sculptures in public spaces, government buildings, municipal gardens... He spared no efforts to export his art to the world, multiplying trips to the USA, Japan, France and elsewhere. He experimented in different genres, styles, sizes, media from the classical marble, stone, wood, bronze, alloys to the more experimental fibre glass, resin, cement. He also believed that the world will discover him one day as a gifted painter as he was known as a talented sculptor. He was a charismatic man, larger than life. Michel Basbous, pioneer of modern sculpture, especially monumental in his country and the Arab world. His artworks are found at Oxford Museum in London, British Museum London, UENO Museum in Japan, the Modern Art Museum in France as well as in many other public places in Lebanon and abroad. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a reduced rate of 5.5% on the hammer price and the prevailing rate on buyer's premium if the item remains in EU.
