John (Jack) Neville Stafford for Stafford Furniture, a Taperback armchair, designed 1956, angular black painted metal with golden fabric seat, 84cm high Note: John (Jack) Neville Stafford (1927-2012), worked as an engineer before retraining at the Royal College of Art in the early 1950s becoming a freelace Television designer. In 1955 he set up his own furniture company, Stafford Furniture, specialising in metal furniture production. His most famous design, the Taperback chair, designed in 1956 won the British Council of Industrial Design, Design of the Year award in 1958. The Taperback chair was a refinement of the organic forms used by other British designers such as Ernest Race in his famous Antelope chair. Blackadder' 56cm x 52.5cm Mounted, framed and under glass Note: Dame Elizabeth Violet Blackadder, (Mrs Houston), DBE, RA, RSA (born 24 September 1931 in Falkirk) is a Scottish painter and printmaker. She is the first woman to be elected to both the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy. In 1962 she began teaching at Edinburgh College of Art where she continued until her retirement in 1986. Blackadder worked in a variety of media such as oil paints, watercolour, drawing and printmaking. She attended Glasgow Print Studio where she worked with print makers to produce etchings and screen prints of flowers. In her still life paintings and drawings, she considers space between objects carefully. . Her work can be seen at the Tate Gallery, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York and has appeared on a series of Royal Mail stamps. In 1982 she was awarded the OBE for her contribution to art which was promoted to a DBE in 2003. In 2001, she was appointed Her Majesty's Painter and Limner in Scotland. Along with an an Honorary degree from Heriot-Watt University in 1989, Blackadder has been awarded honorary doctorates by at least three other universities. Her work remains in high demand at the most prestigious galleries and is included in many of the UK's most significant corporate and private collections

William Bradley (American, 1868-1962) 'THE MODERN POSTER', 1895, limited edition print, numbered 19/1000. 50cm by 31cm (20 by 12¼ inches) The first American book dedicated to the increasing popularity of posters was published by Charles Scribner in 1895, the paper cover label was designed by American Art Nouveau illustrator/designer William Bradley. The book was limited to 1000 copies and each copy came with one of these posters
