Organised by David Dawson, Roger Ely, and Genesis P-Orridge, The Final Academy consisted of a series of main events over four days @ The Ritzy Cinema, Brixton: 29th September to 2nd October, 1982. William S. Burroughs & Brion Gysin would be celebrated in film, music, performance and readings. The famous experimental films shot by Antony Balch in the 1960s would be shown each night. There would also be performances by the experimental music groups that had been inspired by their example: 23 Skidoo, Last Few Days, Cabaret Voltaire and the debut of Psychic TV (recently formed from the ashes of Throbbing Gristle), as well as a variety of other poets and performance artists. Some, like John Giorno & Terry Wilson, were of course friends with Burroughs & Gysin; others, like Anne Bean, Paul Burwell & Ruth Adams, were associates of Roger Ely from the B2 Gallery. Country: UK. * NEIL DALLAS BROWN (SCOTTISH 1938 - 2003), LOVERS AND SKY THREAT, 1967 oil on canvas, signed 127cm x 127cm Framed. Note: Neil Dallas Brown was born in Elgin, Moray and studied at Dundee College of Art, Patrick Allan Fraser School of Art in Arbroath and the Royal Academy Schools. He won a travelling scholarship to the continent and a number of notable awards and prizes. In 1967 he visited New York with a Scottish Arts Council bursary; in 1970 took part in the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Open winning a major prize; and in 1981 won a bursary to the Scottish Arts Council studio in Amsterdam. From 1968-78 he was visiting lecturer at Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, then joined Glasgow School of Art where he taught for some 20 years. He lived in Fife until his death in 2003. Dallas Brown participated in dozens of group shows but also had a series of prestigious solo shows, notably at Compass Gallery in Glasgow, a series in the late 1960s at Piccadilly Gallery in London, a touring retrospective in 1975 from Stirling University, Perth Art Gallery 1987, Thakeray Gallery London in 1989 and Glasgow School of Art 1998. Birds and humans featured in Dallas Brown's pictures, which are tinged with mystery, menace and surrealism. He said ''Painting is love. Painting is an affectionate devotion''. More than 50 of Neil Dallas Brown's paintings are held in major public collections in the UK including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, Fife Council, Hospitalfield, The Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh City Collection, Nottingham Art Gallery, The Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool), Aberdeen Museums & Galleries, Dundee Museums & Galleries, The Fleming Collection (London), Paisley Museums & Galleries and The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Michael Kane (b.1935) Self Portrait (1988) acrylic on canvas signed lower left & dated '88 53½ x 38½cm (21 x 15in) Private Collection Born in Dublin in 1935, Kane studied at the National College of Art & Design, and with Patrick Hickey at the Graphic Studio in Dublin. Kane is arguably best known for his involvement in the establishment of the Independent Artists' exhibitions alongside John Kelly, Brian Bourke and John Behan. This group gave artists a voice outside of the RHA and the IELA exhibitions. He also co-founded the Project Arts Centre in Dublin. Kane's work is held by the Contemporary Irish Art Society; Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon; Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, Dublin; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Municipal Gallery, Tampere, Finland.

Evie Hone HRHA (1894-1955) Composition gouache on card 58½ x 46cm (23 x 18in) Taylor Galleries, Dublin 1984 (label verso); Collection of Finbarr & Moyra O'Donovan Evie Hone (1894 - 1955) was a Dublin born Irish painter and stained glass artist. She was related to Nathaniel Hone. Her most important works are probably the East Window for the Chapel at Eton College, Windsor, England (1949-1952) and My Four Green Fields, now located in Government Buildings. They were commissioned for the Irish Government's Pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Like her companion Mainie Jellett, Evie Hone studied under Walter Sickert at the Westminster Technical Institute in London and worked under André Lhote and Albert Gleizes in Paris before returning to become influential in the modern movement in Ireland, she was one of the founders of the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Evie Hone was extremely devout; she spent time in an Anglican Convent in 1925 and converted to Catholicism in 1937. This may have influenced her in decision to begin working in stained glass. Initially she worked as a member of the stained glass co-operative An Túr Gloine before setting up a studio of her own in Rathfarnham, Dublin.

At age 17, he began pursuing his art talent. Encouraged by his mother, he left Ireland in 1938 to study art collections in London, Paris, Venice and Geneva. He returned to Dublin and launched his career in contemporary art, although he also spent time in London, living there for periods of time. In addition to creating art, he was a teacher at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, a founder and board member of the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin and a founding member of the Kilkenny Design Workshops.

Throughout his career his abstract paintings have continually been informed by the shapes, patterns and visual qualities found by his personal interest in mycology. It is through this abstract language that Francis initiated his platform in the early 1990s to become one of the UK's leading contemporary painters and maintains to be at the forefront of critical evaluation within art. Francis is often characterised by his wet-on-wet painting technique (a technique also used by Gerhard Richter in the 1960s) and his continuous use of grid formations that are present within his paintings. Francis' work is collected by numerous institutions and organisations that include the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Tate and is represented by Kerlin Gallery.

He was largely self-taught, although he briefly attended Belfast College of Art life classes, before working with and studying under fellow Belfast artist Sidney Smith. He quickly developed an expressionist technique, and strong romanticism, with imagery, often full of pathos, evoking the themes of love, life and death. O'Neill's first exhibition was at the Mol Gallery in Belfast in 1941. In 1946 he sold 21 pictures out of 23 at an exhibition at the Waddington Galleries in Dublin and from then on exhibited regularly. In 1949 he visited Paris and was influenced by Georges Rouault, Maurice de Vlaminck and Maurice Utrillo. In 1951 his work was shown in the Tooth Galleries, London and he also exhibited there with Colin Middleton in 1954. In the 1950s, O'Neill moved from Belfast to Conlig, County Down, where there was a small artist's colony that also included George Campbell and Gerard Dillon. Along with Colin Middleton, Gerard Dillon and George Campbell he was one of a group of artists who respected each other's work and kept in touch over the course of their careers. He lived in London from 1958 to 1971. During his lifetime, O'Neill's works were primarily exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy. More recently, some of his paintings were shown at the Irish Museum of Modern Art as part of a 2005 exhibition of Northern Irish artists. His work is represented in many collections including the Ulster Museum, Queen's University Belfast and the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, Dublin.

* NEIL DALLAS BROWN (SCOTTISH 1938 - 2003),LOVERS AND SKY THREAT, 1967 oil on canvas, signed 127cm x 127cm Framed. Note: Neil Dallas Brown was born in Elgin, Moray and studied at Dundee College of Art, Patrick Allan Fraser School of Art in Arbroath and the Royal Academy Schools. He won a travelling scholarship to the continent and a number of notable awards and prizes. In 1967 he visited New York with a Scottish Arts Council bursary; in 1970 took part in the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Open winning a major prize; and in 1981 won a bursary to the Scottish Arts Council studio in Amsterdam. From 1968-78 he was visiting lecturer at Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, then joined Glasgow School of Art where he taught for some 20 years. He lived in Fife until his death in 2003. Dallas Brown participated in dozens of group shows but also had a series of prestigious solo shows, notably at Compass Gallery in Glasgow, a series in the late 1960s at Piccadilly Gallery in London, a touring retrospective in 1975 from Stirling University, Perth Art Gallery 1987, Thakeray Gallery London in 1989 and Glasgow School of Art 1998. Birds and humans featured in Dallas Brown's pictures, which are tinged with mystery, menace and surrealism. He said ''Painting is love. Painting is an affectionate devotion''. More than 50 of Neil Dallas Brown's paintings are held in major public collections in the UK including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, Fife Council, Hospitalfield, The Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh City Collection, Nottingham Art Gallery, The Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool), Aberdeen Museums & Galleries, Dundee Museums & Galleries, The Fleming Collection (London), Paisley Museums & Galleries and The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
