After Charles Lees RSA GRAND MATCH AT GOLF AN EXTREMELY RARE SIGNED PROOF IMPRESSION BEFORE PRINTED WITH TITLE: mixed method engraving by Charles E. Wagstaffe, signed in Pencil by Lees and titled as above, printed on laid india paper, framed & glazed, backboard with the label of the publisher T. Alexander Hill, Artists' Colourman to the Royal Scottish Academy, 12 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh, 53 by 86cm., 21 by 34in.; sold with a modern key plate to the engraving, framed & glazed (2) This print is believed to have been the first impression from the plate, signed and titled in pencil by Charles Lees and then presented to the engraver Charles E. Wagstaffe (born 1808). Charles Lees was born in 1800 in Cupar, Fifeshire, and began his artistic career as a pupil of the eminent Edinburgh portraitist Sir Henry Raeburn. With the exception of six months spent in Rome, Lees spent his entire working life in Edinburgh from an address at 19 Scotland Street. He established a fine reputation as a portrait painter and was elected a Royal Scottish Academician in 1830 and later became the Academy's Treasurer. From the 1840's Lees began specialising in sporting and recreational subjects. His oil painting of the golfers' grand match at St Andrews in 1841 is the most famous golfing work of art in the world and is owned by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. The match was between Sir David Baird and Sir Ralph Anstruther on one side and Major Playfair and John Campbell of Glensaddell on the other. Charles Lees died in 1880.

The first, Bellerson's lacks 'A short discourse of the yeere'. The second, 'Compiled and written according to the true rules of lawfull Art, by John Johnson Teacher of Arithmetick and Geometry in the City of London', was also composed according to the latitude and meridian of London (but valid for the whole of Great Britain), with the same contents - apart from the Anatomical Man - and similar health notes at the top of each month. The third almanack, by George Hawkins, is 'Calculated for the Meridian and Latitude of Cirencester in Gloucestrer-shire' (but intended 'for all the South and West parts of England, & without sencible error for all England'). The fourth, by John Vaux, Curate of St. Hellen, Aukland, unlike the previous almanacks, conatins a one page chronology of importany hoistorical events from the Creation to ill Lady day in Lent. Provenance: Bookplate of E. F. Bosanquet on pastedown.

First edition, folio, large italic letter, printer's 'noli altum' device on title, ornate naturalistic initials and headpieces, contemporary vellum, very slight foxing. Note: BM STC French Books p. 265; Adams L 625; Renouard 186:3; Brunet III 1046. First collected edition of the poems of Michel de L'Hôpital (1504-1573), one of the greatest chancellors of France, foremost amongst his countrymen in attempts to reconcile both Catholic and Protestant. Throughout his life he cultivated Latin poetry writing particularly on contemporary personages and historical events e.g. the marriage of the Dauphin and Mary, Queen of Scots; the coronation of Francis II; the raising of the siege of Metz; the taking of Calais and the modern art of government. After his death his friends Pibrac, de Thou and Scévoie de Sainte Marthe combined to produce the present volume of substantially unpublished writings, in his memory. It was edited by his grandson, who preserved their chronological arrangement and thus their particular value as a continuous political commentary of the day.

'Winged Hours', a Compton Pottery sectional grey terracotta garden sundial, modelled with winged cherub heads, the conforming capital also with roundels inscribed N, S, E and W, with an octagonal engraved dial, approximately 112cm high (faults). Exhibited: The Watts Gallery exhibition, 1998 at Compton. See Franklin Gould, Veronica. Archibald Knox & Mary Seton Watts Modern Celtic Art Garden Pottery, pp. 14, 15 and 41. Watts's first tombstone, modelled in March 1898 by Thomas Steadman, was inspired by a pattern in the Liberty of Saint Gall, embellished with a ring of cherubs, their intertwining wings surrounding a celtic wheel cross and knot roundel. Two days later Louis Deuchars modelled the capital for her Winged Hours sundial where cherubs face north, south, east and west, suggesting the idea of the Cross

Bruce McLean (b. 1944), 'Burnt', Limited edition screenprint 13/75, Signed in pencil lower right, Inscribed with title and numbered, S. 119cm x 92cm, Unframed, Bruce McLean was born in Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He reacted against the 'pomposity' of modern sculpture by his humorous performance art and sculptures made from rubbish. He taught at Croydon School of Art, Maidstone College, and Epsom School of Art. In the late 70s he turned back to more traditional forms of art, prints and paintings, however, despite his growing international reputation, he continued to mock the art world, and even himself. His work is held by the Arts Council and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
