In ihren frühen Werken aus den 1990er Jahren scheint die Künstlerin die Dimensionen der Leinwände mit großen Pinselstrichen parallel zu den Bildkanten zu "vermessen", um die Grenzen des Bildträgers und der Farben zu überdenken. Bekannt wird Grosse durch ihre einzigartigen, meist temporären, Sprayarbeiten, in denen sie die Architektur der von ihr mit der Sprühpistole in explosiven Farben bearbeiteten Räume auflöst und den Raum in die Fläche kippen lässt, um gleichzeitig wieder neue, anders gelagerte Zwei- und Dreidimensionalitäten zu schaffen. Auch Möbel und Landschaften "übersprüht" sie und schafft so neue Realitäten. Das hier vorgestellte Werk zählt zum Frühwerk der Künstlerin. Wunderbar setzt Grosse Blau- und Gelbtöne neben- und übereinander, lässt sie zu Grün verschmelzen oder für sich stehen. Grenzen werden gesetzt, aber auch neu definiert, denn sie verschwimmen oder werden überschritten. Wie alle ihre Werke ist auch dieses Gemälde höchst ästhetisch. Doch Grosses Arbeiten verharren nie an der Oberfläche. Denn das im Bild festgehaltene Denken und Handeln der Künstlerin ist immer erfahrbar. So eröffnen ihre Werke den Diskurs über die Kunst und die Malerei im Besonderen, wodurch die Künstlerin eine der spannendsten und einzigartigsten malerischen Positionen der Gegenwartskunst schafft. Der Stier, der bereits Picasso als Ausdruck der Männlichkeit und der Gewalt diente, erscheint nur fast unscheinbar im Hintergrund des Toreros. So wird deutlich, dass es Leiko Ikemura in ihrem Werk "Torero, gelb" nicht primär um den Stierkampf, sondern um Gewaltfantasien geht. Ganz typisch für ihr frühes Werk wird hier der Kampf der Geschlechter thematisiert. Dieses war lange der Malerei vorbehalten, bis die zweite Generation der "Düsseldorfer Fotoschule" (wie Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff oder Thomas Struth) es auch im Medium der Fotografie salonfähig machte. Die Größe des Werkes "Tribute in Light" umfängt den Betrachter in einer Monumentalität, die ihn eintauchen lässt - in das Bild und seine Geschichte. Denn als Bildmotiv wählt Kaspers hier ebenfalls ein großes Thema, das um die Welt ging: die Anschläge auf das World Trade Center am 11. September 2001.So sehen wir auf Kaspers hier präsentierter Fotografie die Skyline New Yorks, die jeder Weitgereiste wie auch jeder Nichtgereiste durch ihre mediale Omni-Präsenz kennt. Das Bild entstand im Jahr nach dem Unglück und die Twin Towers haben bereits ihre Lücke in der Stadt und in der Skyline hinterlassen. Hier werden sie nun durch zwei Lichtsäulen in den Nachthimmel ersetzt und der Bildtitel "Tribute in Light" verweist auf die gleichnamige Lichtinstallation, die im Frühjahr 2002 temporär am Ground Zero angebracht wurde. Kaspers rückt in seinem Bildausschnitt die Skyline in das untere Viertel, sodass der Nachthimmel und vor allem die beiden Lichtsäulen in seiner Komposition dominieren. Ein Fokus liegt dabei auch auf den beiden Lichtpunkten am Ende des Lichtstrahles, die eine leise Hoffnung zu versinnbildlichen scheinen. Die Ausdruckskraft der Lichtinstallation wird durch Kaspers' Wahl des Bildausschnittes hervorgehoben und durch das fotografische Festhalten bleibt die Erinnerung an die Opfer auch weiterhin gewahrt. Gleichzeitig zeigt uns Kaspers in seinem eindrucksvollen Werk "Tribute in Light", dass durch Hoffnung erneut Schönheit entstehen kann. Manche Zahlen bewegen sich schneller, andere langsamer. Manche Zahlen scheinen kühler, während andere strahlen. Oft ist die Arbeit vielleicht auch vom Strom genommen und es leuchtet nichts. Der Lauf der Zahlen dient unter anderem als Metapher für Lebenszyklen und spiegelt Miyajimas Auseinandersetzung mit Glaubensfragen, insbesondere dem Buddhismus. Die Philosophie der alten Griechen bietet einen parallelen Diskurs mit dem Fokus auf Fluss und Übergang als Metaphern für den Lebenskreislauf. Die gemeinsam ablaufenden Zahlen als Metapher für die Menschheit könnten auch bedeuten, dass Menschen und andere Lebewesen nicht getrennt voneinander existieren können. Zudem befindet sich die Menschheit im Wandel und jeder Einzelne ändert sich stetig. Auch lassen die Abläufe den ewigen Zyklus von Geburt bis Tod erkennen und zeigen so die Grundstruktur eines Lebens auf. Wenn die Skala von 1-9 das Leben auf einer gemeinschaftlichen, allumfassenden, aber auch singulär betrachteten Ebene aufzeigt, wird schnell klar, dass die Zahl Null keinen Platz in Miyajimas Arbeiten finden kann. Diese steht ganz klar für eine Pause oder einen Nullpunkt, die eine Kluft zwischen den Zählzyklen eröffnen würden. Der Tod ist bspw. ganz einfach ein Zustand wie das Leben und der Punkt bevor das Leben an anderer Stelle wiederbeginnt. Weiter betrachtet verändern sich z.B. Generationen oder auch die Welt an sich in einem Fluss und nicht in klar gesetzten Abschnitten. So ist die Arbeit nicht nur eine Progression, sondern auch eine sichtbare Darstellung der Veränderung innerhalb dieser Progression. Diese breite Promenade am Hafen mit ihren vielen Platanen, Kiosks und Bänken dürfte Liebermann gefallen haben, da sie - auch zu seinen Lebzeiten - von vielen Leuten frequentiert wird.Liebermann hat die Skizze vermutlich vor Ort gezeichnet während seines vierwöchigen Aufenthalts (zusammen mit seiner Frau Martha und ihrer gemeinsamen Tochter Käthe) an der französischen Rivièra im Frühjahr 1907. Vom Ende Februar bis Ende März besuchte die kleine Familie zunächst Cannes, später auch Mentone und Monaco. Quaytman, born in 1961, grew up in the New York art world of the 60s and 70s. Her mother is the poet Susan Howe, her father is the late painter Harvey Quaytman. In keeping with her family background, the boundaries between image and language blur in her work. In the 1980s Quaytman studied painting at Bard College, New York, and then briefly with Daniel Buren and Pontus Hultén in Paris. This was followed by several years as a studio assistant with Dan Graham. In 2001, R. H. Quaytman began a long-term conceptual project, which she continues to this day: She creates most of her paintings according to a certain system, which she calls a book. Each exhibition is a further, so-called "chapter". An unchangeable rule is that each chapter refers to the place where it was first exhibited. In addition to the structural order, a special set of rules also applies to the formal composition of her works: the possible formats are limited to 7 variants, all of which are oriented towards the golden ratio. Quaytman also paints on plywood boards with bevelled edges, all of which are handcrafted. On a carefully applied Gesso primer (chalk and glue), photos and pictures from archives of all kinds are printed in a screen printing process. Almost every chapter also contains one or two oil paintings called captions. The individual chapters contain a multitude of painting styles and motifs that are held together by formal but also narrative relationships. Thus there are many repetitive elements that connect the individual "chapters" with each other. The "chapters" are supplemented by selected single works. The use of geometric patterns, such as the hexagon here, to which this painting owes its title, creates optical and perspective illusions. The artist not only plays with the movement and position of the viewer in the painting itself, but often also in the spatial installation of her exhibitions. Today Rebecca Quaytman has arrived at "Chapter 35" and can already look back on many important international exhibitions. The solo exhibitions in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2010) and the Kunsthalle Basel (2011) as well as her participation in the Venice Biennale (2011), the presentation of the Wolfgang-Hahn Prize in Cologne (2015), and her participation in the Documenta in Kassel (2017) were particularly important. Quaytman wuchs in der New Yorker Kunstwelt der 60er und 70er Jahre auf. Ihre Mutter ist die Dichterin Susan Howe, ihr Vater ist der verstorbene Maler Harvey Quaytman. Passend zu ihrer familiären Herkunft verschwimmen in ihrem Werk die Grenzen zwischen Bild und Sprache. Quaytman studierte in den 1980er Jahren u.a. Malerei am Bard College, New York, danach kurz bei Daniel Buren und Pontus Hultén in Paris. Es folgte eine mehrjährige Studioassistenz bei Dan Graham. Im Jahr 2001 beginnt R. H. Quaytman ein konzeptuelles Langzeitprojekt, welches sie bis heute fortführt: Sie legt die meisten Gemälde nach einem bestimmten System an, welches sie selbst als Buch bezeichnet. Dabei ist jede Ausstellung ein weiteres, sogenanntes "Chapter". Eine unveränderliche Regel ist, dass sich jedes Kapitel auf den Ort bezieht, an dem es zum ersten Mal ausgestellt wurde. Neben der strukturellen Ordnung gilt außerdem auch ein besonderes Regelwerk für die formale Beschaffenheit ihrer Werke: die möglichen Formate sind auf 7 Varianten limitiert, die sich alle am Goldenen Schnitt orientierten. Quaytman malt außerdem auf Sperrholzplatten mit angeschrägten Kanten, die alle mit viel Handarbeit bearbeitet werden. Auf eine sorgfältig aufgetragene Gesso-Grundierung (Kreide und Leim) werden im Siebdruckverfahren Fotos und Bilder aus Archiven aller Art gedruckt. Fast jedes Kapitel enthält zudem ein oder zwei Ölgemälde, die als Bildlegende, "Caption", bezeichnet sind. Die einzelnen Kapitel beinhalten eine Vielzahl von Malstilen und Motiven, die durch formale aber auch narrative Beziehungen zusammengehalten werden. So finden sich vielfach repetitive Elemente, die die einzelnen "Chapter" miteinander verbinden. Ergänzt werden die "Chapter" durch ausgewählte alleinstehende Werke. Der Einsatz von geometrischen Mustern, wie hier das Hexagon, dem das vorliegende Gemälde seinen Titel zu verdanken hat, erzeugt optische und perspektivische Illusionen. Dabei spielt die Künstlerin nicht nur im Gemälde selbst sondern oftmals auch in der räumlichen Installation ihrer Ausstellungen mit der Bewegung und Position des Betrachters. Heute ist Rebecca Quaytman bei "Chapter 35" angekommen und kann bereits auf viele bedeutende internationale Ausstellungen zurückblicken. Besonders wichtig waren sicherlich die Einzelausstellungen im San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2010) und der Kunsthalle Basel (2011) sowie die Teilnahme an der Biennale in Venedig (2011), die Verleihung des Wolfgang-Hahn Preises in Köln (2015) sowie die Teilnahme an der Documenta in Kassel (2017). Erst im letzten Jahr widmete das Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York ihr eine große Einzelausstellung und aktuell zeigt die Francois Pinault Collection in der Punta della Dogana eine Installation im Rahmen der Gruppenausstellung "Luogo e Segni", parallel zur diesjährigen Biennale. Provenienz:- Unternehmenssammlung DeutschlandBis zu seinem frühen Tod im Jahr 2006 im Alter von 41 Jahren führte Rhoades einen kontinuierlichen Angriff auf ästhetische Konventionen. Er konzipierte seine Arbeiten im Rahmen eines laufenden Projekts, in dem die Installationen kontinuierlich verändert und ergänzt wurden. In Hamburg realisierte Rhoades 1999 eine große Installation mit dem Titel Perfect World, bei der ein monumentales Gerüst eine mit großen Löchern durchsetzte Holzplattform trug, durch die unterhalb drapiertes Material sichtbar wurde. Rhoades verglich die Plattform mit dem Garten Eden, der prekär über der Hölle schwebte. Diese Zeichnungen sind ein Tagebuch der Installation und enthalten Diagramme, Skizzen, Fantasien und Telefonnummern. Die Plexiglasrahmen sind integraler Bestandteil der Arbeit und reflektieren Farbe an der Wand in einem subtilen Bezug zu den Minimal Artists wie Donald Judd oder Dan Flavin. Andere Zeichnungen dieses Projektes sind unter anderem im Besitz des MOMA in New York. So auch in seinem Gemälde "Pause" aus dem Jahr 2007. Der Raum bleibt nicht näher bestimmbar und wird dominiert von sowohl konkreten als auch sich auflösenden Formen und Farbsplittern. Durch die sich scheinbar verschiebende Perspektive, versucht der Betrachter die einzelnen Fragmente architektonisch zusammenzusetzen, scheitert jedoch, obwohl das Werk durch den im unteren Drittel definierten Horizont eine unleugbare Tiefe und Stabilität besitzt. Durch die Auflösung des Ganzen in einen irrealen Raum, erscheinen die Fragmente dieser eigenwilligen Konstruktion wie eine virtuelle Realität, die den Betrachter zwischen Raumauflösung und Gegenständlichkeit wanken lässt.Die Überlagerung von Architektur und Natur in explosionsartigen Farbsplittern lassen die Werke des Künstlers schnelllebig und instabil wirken. Durch die Kompositionen wird der Blick in unterschiedliche Richtungen gelenkt und kommt nicht zur Ruhe. Dies kann man als eine Kritik an unserer Gesellschaft und Hinterfragung der Zeitwahrnehmung des Betrachters verstehen. Nach Kontakten zur wilden Malerei der "Mülheimer Freiheit" setzt sich Andreas Schultze von dieser Künstlergruppe ab, um seinen eigenen, einzigartigen Malstil zu entwickeln. Fortan lässt er humorvolle Bildwelten entstehen, die Realistisches und Symbolhaftes vereinen.So auch in dem hier präsentierten Werk: Vor eine Flusslandschaft mit Wiesen und Wäldern setzt der Künstler einen nach links gebogenen rohrartigen Pfeil, der auf den Boden und auf einen dort platzierten Schriftzug deutet. Schneeflocken gleich fallen weiße Punkten von oben herab und bedecken die gesamte Bildfläche.Mit dem Pfeil und dem Schriftzug "hier war ich schon mal" verweist der Künstler auf ironisch-spielerische Art auf jene Touristen, die sich auf ihren Reisen nicht auf die Begebenheiten des jeweiligen Ortes einlassen, sondern lediglich ihre Liste von besuchten Orten erweitern möchten. Gleichzeitig kreiert Andreas Schulze in diesem Werk einen neuen Ort, in den es sich "einzutauchen" lohnt. Denn, wie bei allen seinen Arbeiten, schöpft der Künstler auch hier aus einem "bunten Pool" wunderbarer Fantasien, denen wir uns nicht entziehen können.
