FERNANDO DE SZYSZLO (PERUVIAN 1925-2017) El Encuentro, gouache on paper full sheet measuring 16 x 63 cm (6 1/4 x 24/ 3/4 in.) signed lower right LOT NOTESThe present work is a study for the epynomous mural, executed on the facade of the second floor of El Centro Cultural Ricardo Palma (El Centro Cultural de la municipalidad de Miraflores), in commemoration of the fifth centennial of the discovery of America.Peruvian artist Fernando de Szyszlo is justly considered one of the pioneers of Latin American abstraction. After graduating from School of Plastic Arts at the Catholic University in Lima, Szyszlo travelled through Europe where he became deeply inspired by Surrealist poets such as Andre Breton and Octavio Paz. After this moment, the artist seeked to depict the indigeneity of pre-Columbian sacred sites in his abstract paintings that often hover on the border between reality and imagination. SzyszloÍs masterful ability to portray the playfulness between light and shadow is apparent in this work and typical of his art. El Encuentro depicts the various surface layers of his native land interrupted by artificial constructive elements- an exploration of contrast between organic and man-made. This work is a study for mural executed on the facade of El Centro Cultural Ricardo Palma in Lima, Peru. Fernando de Szyszlo shared the centerÍs mission to spread Peruvian culture to every citizen. His choice of location shows SzyszloÍs commitment to his country and desire to proliferate the interest in culture to the masses. Szyszlo passed away in 2017 leaving behind a successful career of an artist exhibited in such prominent institutions as The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.

Original vintage advertising poster for an exhibition of one hundred prints by Pablo Picasso at the Galerie Guiot in Paris in 1973. Pablo Ruiz Picasso (25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. Regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937), a dramatic portrayal of the bombing of Guernica by the German and Italian airforces during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent in his early years, painting in a naturalistic manner through his childhood and adolescence. During the first decade of the 20th century, his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. After 1906, the Fauvist work of the slightly older artist Henri Matisse motivated Picasso to explore more radical styles, beginning a fruitful rivalry between the two artists, who subsequently were often paired by critics as the leaders of modern art. Picasso's work is often categorized into periods. While the names of many of his later periods are debated, the most commonly accepted periods in his work are the Blue Period (1901–1904), the Rose Period (1904–1906), the African-influenced Period (1907–1909), Analytic Cubism (1909–1912), and Synthetic Cubism (1912–1919), also referred to as the Crystal period. Much of Picasso's work of the late 1910s and early 1920s is in a neoclassical style, and his work in the mid-1920s often has characteristics of Surrealism. His later work often combines elements of his earlier styles. Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the best-known figures in 20th-century art. Good condition, small cracks, folds in margins. County: France, year of printing:1973, designer: Pablo Picasso, size (cm): 64.5x44

Lot 1807

Original vintage music advertising poster for the release of David Bowie's fifteenth album Let's Dance in 1983, including the hit singles Let's Dance, China Girl and Modern Love. This poster features the classic image used for the album cover, with David Bowie donning boxing gloves to play with his androgynous appeal, the cover also boasted graphic typography typical of the era. Good condition, folded as issued, creases in margins. County: UK, year of printing:1983, designer: Greg Gorman (Photographer), size (cm): 76x51. David Robert Jones (8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016), known professionally as David Bowie was an English singer, songwriter and actor. He was a leading figure in the music industry and is considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, acclaimed by critics and musicians, particularly for his innovative work during the 1970s. His career was marked by reinvention and visual presentation, with his music and stagecraft having a significant impact on popular music. During his lifetime, his record sales, estimated at 140 million albums worldwide, made him one of the world's best-selling music artists. In the UK, he was awarded ten platinum album certifications, eleven gold and eight silver, and released eleven number-one albums. In the US, he received five platinum and nine gold certifications. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Born in Brixton, South London, Bowie developed an interest in music as a child, eventually studying art, music and design before embarking on a professional career as a musician in 1963. "Space Oddity" became his first top-five entry on the UK Singles Chart after its release in July 1969. After a period of experimentation, he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era with his flamboyant and androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. The character was spearheaded by the success of his single "Starman" and album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which won him widespread popularity. In 1975, Bowie's style shifted radically towards a sound he characterised as "plastic soul", initially alienating many of his UK devotees but garnering him his first major US crossover success with the number-one single "Fame" and the album Young Americans. In 1976, Bowie starred in the cult film The Man Who Fell to Earth, directed by Nicolas Roeg, and released Station to Station. The following year, he further confounded musical expectations with the electronic-inflected album Low (1977), the first of three collaborations with Brian Eno that came to be known as the "Berlin Trilogy". "Heroes" (1977) and Lodger (1979) followed; each album reached the UK top five and received lasting critical praise. After uneven commercial success in the late 1970s, Bowie had UK number ones with the 1980 single "Ashes to Ashes", its parent album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), and "Under Pressure", a 1981 collaboration with Queen. He reached his commercial peak in 1983 with Let's Dance; the album's title track topped both UK and US charts. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bowie continued to experiment with musical styles, including industrial and jungle. He also continued acting; his roles included Major Jack Celliers in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth (1986), Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Nikola Tesla in The Prestige (2006), among other film and television appearances and cameos. He stopped touring after 2004 and his last live performance was at a charity event in 2006. In 2013, Bowie returned from a decade-long recording hiatus with The Next Day. He remained musically active until he died of liver cancer two days after the release of his final album, Blackstar (2016).

He produced designs for booklets on the Russian ballet, 'L'Oiseau de feu', and illustrated 'The Story of My Heart' by Richard Jefferies in 1923. The latter has long been regarded as the first publication in Britain to be illustrated with modern engravings. White was also a committed painter, he was elected to the London Group in 1915 and he became a member of the New English Art Club in 1921. 'In the Woods' demonstrates the influences of White's woodblock engravings as well as his respect for the Impressionist painters of France. The subject of the picture also shows Ethelbert's love of the English landscape. He and his wife, Elizabeth, purchased a horse-drawn gypsy caravan and they travelled through the counties of Surrey and Sussex. It is possible that the solitary female figure in the painitng is Elizabeth White. The present lot was purchased from the memorial exhibition held at the Maltzahn Gallery in 1972, one of a number of exhibitions to take place following the death of Ethelbert White

§ Oswald Herzog, (German, 1881-1939), reclining female nude, bronze, signed in the bronze, Noack, Berlin foundry mark 20.50 x 40cm (8 x 16in) Other Notes: A Polish-born artist, Oswald Herzog, grew up in Germany and became renowned primarily as a sculptor. By 1919, when his works were first exhibited in the Galerie Der Sturm exhibition, Herzog was a well-established artist based in Berlin and associated with the famous Sturm circle of artists. Set up by Herwarth Walden (1879-1941), the German Expressionist artist and one of the greatest champions of German avant-garde art of his time, Der Sturm exhibitions became the mainstay of Berlin's modern art scene. Displaying the likes of Pablo Picasso, Jean Metzinger, Paul Klee, Gino Severini and others, the exhibitions aimed to introduce the works of Cubists, Italian Futurists and Expressionists to Germany. In 1933, Herzog's art was condemned as 'degenerate' and was exhibited at the 'Entartete Kunst' exhibition in Munich in 1937 among the 650 works of modern art deemed degenerate by the Nazi Party. In his own writings on art theory, Herzog often referred to his own work and labelled his sculptures as 'Abstract Expressionist'. By the 1920s, the human form and individualised modelling of his sculptures gradually gave way to more abstract, elongated and distorted shapes, only vaguely reminiscent of a human figure. The surfaces of his works are typically smooth and glossy. His sculptures, which come to the market rarely, have been likened to those of Alexander Archipenko and William Wauer.

Kenjiro Azuma (Japanese, born 1926), a limited edition bronze, the abstract form based around the artists 'MU' series, signed in the bronze and numbered 58/400 16 x 13.50cm (6 x 5in) Born in Japan, Azuma Kenjiro enrolled at the Tokyo University of the Arts to study sculpture, before leaving for Italy to further his training at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in 1956. He went on to spend six decades of his life in Milan. Working in the workshop of the Italian sculptor, Marino Marini (1901-1980), Kenjiro was much encouraged to draw on his Japanese identity and Eastern philosophies, which inspired him to develop the MU series - of which the present lot is an example. From 1962 onwards, all his sculptures were named 'MU' followed by a number - MU meaning 'nothing' in Kanji and Chinese. The current lot epitomizes the MU series in its abstract shape and geometric as well as symbolic features. The hollow dots and marks are recurring features throughout his sculptures, referring to the passing of time. Its surrealistic undertones are characteristic of the Punto Art Movement. In 1961, Kenjiro joined the Punto Art Movement, established in Milan by the Chinese-born abstract painter, Hsiao Chin, (b.1935). Representing Japan, Kenjiro became the only member working predominantly with sculpture. In 1963, he was awarded the Japanese National Museum of Modern Art prize. In 1975, his work was acquired by the Vatican Museum, and became its first collection by a Japanese artist. In very good condition.
