* ALAN DAVIE CBE RA HRSA RWA (SCOTTISH 1920 - 2014), VILLAGE MYTHS NO. 16 gouache on paper, signed, titled and dated February 83 90cm x 73cm Mounted, framed and under glass Note: Scottish painter, trained as a painter at Edinburgh College of Art from 1938 to 1940, initially favouring poetic imagery and coming into contact with modernism at exhibitions held in London of works by Picasso (1945; V&A) and Paul Klee (1945; Tate). He explored a diverse range of activities, however, before returning to painting from 1949 to 1953 he earned his living by making jewellery and in 1947 he worked as a jazz musician, an activity he continued in later life. He wrote poetry during the early 1940s. From 1953 to 1956 Davie taught in London at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where he became interested in African and Pacific art. As early as 1958 Davie emphasised the importance in his work of intuition, as expressed in the form of enigmatic signs. During the 1960s, both in paintings and in coloured lithographs, he represented such images with increasing clarity at the expense of gestural handling. In 1971 he made his first visit to the island of St Lucia, where he began to spend half of each year and which brought Caribbean influences to bear on his suggestive imagery, as in Bird Gong No. 10, Opus 730 (1973; London, Brit. Council). Taking on the role of a disinherited shaman, Davie created a synthesis of mythologies from a variety of cultures for a modern civilisation devoid of its own village myths.

Europe, French, Rococo, ca. 18th century CE. An impressively large and exceptionally fine tapestry sewn to a satiny cotton fabric backing of golden hues from the Rococo period, depicting a leisurely outing for the four individuals featured in the foreground of the pastoral countryside setting, that once graced the walls of the Schonbrun Palace in Vienna. The name Schonbrunn means "beautiful spring," a sensuous name worthy of this remarkable textile work of art. We see all the trappings of French Rococo art, cotton candy pastel hues in shades of blue, pink, lavendar, and green against a golden ground, a relaxed and carefree scene of figures, including at least one couple, enjoying leisurely activities such as hunting and simply lolling about in the lavish outdoors, elements of architecture including stone bridges, cottages, and to the right a building with gargoyles adorning the exterior, all framed by an elaborate floral border. Characteristic of the Rococo period, the artist who created this piece used a delicate pastel color palette and curving forms, a relatively delicate approach that departed from the Baroque stylings of serious dramatic religious and historical themes. Akin to the great Rococo painters Jean-Antoine Watteau, Francois Boucher, and Jean-Honore Fragonard, this composition connotes the sensuousness and frivolity of the wealthy aristocratic class of the period. The word Rococo derives from the French rocaille (stone) and coquilles (shell) stemming from the Rococo taste for these objects in their decoration and the embrace of shell-like curves and ornament. Just imagine this tapestry in a typical Rococo interior with its elegant furniture, elaborate gilded mirrors, wall paintings, pastel painted walls with gold and silver reliefs, and sumptuous sculptures adding to the ambviance and exemplifying the synthesis of all the arts (Gesamtkunstwerk) of the period! Size: 83"L x 105"W (210.8 cm x 266.7 cm)According to paperwork that accompanies the piece, "Schonbrunn Palace is a former imperial 1,441-room Rococo summer residence in modern Vienna, Austria. One of the most important cultural monuments in the country, since the 1960s it has been one of the major tourist attractions in Vienna. The palace and gardens illustrate the tastes, interests, and aspirations of successive Habsburg monarchs. In the year 1569, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II purchased a floodplain whre a former owner, in 1548, had erected a mansion called Katterberg. The emperor orderd the area to be fenced and put game there such as pheasants, ducks, deer and boar, in order to serve as the court's recreational hunting ground. Ina small separate area, "exotic" birds such as turkeys and peafowl were kept. Fishponds were built too. . . Provenance: Ex. Tiernan Collection, Colorado, Purchased directly from Schonbrun Palace during renovation.sd Condition: In superb condition with brass loops sewn to back for suspension. Expected wear with some fading, staining, and fraying, but overall in remarkably excellent condition. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. An interesting, original typescript (unsigned) of a speech given by Edward, Prince of Wales, with numerous holograph corrections in pencil, five pages, 4to, n.p. (London), n.d. (April 1919), on the printed stationery of Buckingham Palace. The speech was delivered by the Prince of Wales to the Royal Academy on 26th April 1919 and reads, in part (bold words representing the Prince's holograph corrections), 'Mr President, Your Excellencies, My Lords & Gentlemen It is with feelings of considerable diffidence that I address this distinguished assembly. During the past sixty years the dinner given by the Royal Academy has rarely taken place without the presence among its guests of my Grandfather or of my Father. To follow in their footsteps is a great responsibility. I have not got their long experience.....With all my heart I thank I am deeply grateful to the President for the kind and appreciative terms in which he has coupled with this toast the names of my dear Mother, of Queen Alexandra, and of the other members of my Family......The past four & a half years and a half of war have led me into paths far distant from those of the Arts. I wonder in what impression way this great world struggle will leave its impress upon the artistic 20th of the 20th century Art? What for instance will be the effect of the experiences of trench warfare, its monotonous, strenuous, undramatic life, but yet one calling forth all the dogged resistance and the heroic self-sacrifice of manhood? And again take the weapons & appliances of modern warfare, the aeroplane, the tank, the submarine, the gigantic battleship - the asphyxiating gasses will they appeal to the creative genius of the artist?....My Lords and Gentlemen, I do can not presume to offer any opinion upon Art....But perhaps I may be allowed before to remind this this eminent body of Royal Academicians to refer to of one new branch of art which has not only played an important part in our naval & military achievements, but has created a new name - borrowed it is true from our neighbours the French - but so strong, so apt in its meaning as to have been that it has also been adopted as a designation of an art, or shall I say a science an art more profitable than noble, that power of deception as old as the story of Esau and Jacob. Truly history repeats itself, and the triumph of the camouflage both on at sea and on land, the development of which we in this country owe so much to a distinguished Royal Academician....The President has been kind enough to associate my name with that great national movement which today so much occupies our minds so much today, and which it is hoped will take result in prompt and drastic measures to provide adequate, sanitary and cheerful homes for all classes of the population people....The wonder is, if I may be allowed to say so, that only now have we been brought to realise that this pressing need must be boldly faced and boldly handled. May Can not this representative Society of Art be able to bring its powerful influence to bear upon the scheme by giving to those & ensure to the new homes, designs, not only utilitarian in character, but attractive to the eye? And having this object in view, it is indeed a happy coincidence that such a distinguished Architect has, for the first time in the life of the Royal Academy now been now chosen as its President....Once more I thank you very sincerely for‘ Together with a second typescript copy of the same speech, also unsigned and with no corrections, six pages, 8vo, n.p. (London), n.d. (April 1919), being a revised copy of the speech with the Prince's alterations included. Some very light, minor age wear, generally VG, 2 Aston Webb (1849-1930) English Architect and President of the Royal Academy 1919-24.
