Aristide Maillol, (French, 1861 ~ 1944), The Cyclist, also called The Ephebe, 20th century cast after a model from 1907-8, patinated bronze, monogrammed M to the integral oval socle, the figure portayed in contrapposto, looking slightly to dexter, the left hand touching the left shoulder 53 cm high including rectangular stone base CATALOGUE NOTES: The present work is a later cast after a model made by Maillol for his early patron Count Harry Kessler, depicting the cyclist Gaston Colin. Versions of the larger model are held by the Musee d'Orsay and the Kunstmuseum, Basel. Aristide Maillol studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and went on to join the spiritual art movement of Les Nabis alongside Paul Gauguin in the 1890's, creating not only sculpture but also tapestries and woodcuts. The simplified, stark lines of the Nabis remained influential throughout Maillol's career. Though primarily known for his monumental female nudes, this male bronze, though in a classical pose, is imbued with the angular geometry and highly modern, simplified lines so typical of Maillol's oeuvre

This tactile, sensually modelled mask is said to represent the features of the model George Bridgeman, who also features in Philpot's paintingsPaintings by Philpot, including his self portrait, are held by the National Portrait Gallery, and the present model, on a different base, is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert MuseumA version of this model was sold at Bonham's Knightsbridge, 'Modern British and Irish Art', 11 July 2017, Lot 151

JOHN RILEY (BRITISH 1646-1691)PORTRAIT OF A LADY WITH PEARLS Oil on canvas, oval74cm x 63.5cm (29in x 25in)Note: John Riley was an eminent portrait painter of courtly life in the 17th century. Second only to Sir Peter Lely and with a lone rival in Sir Godfrey Kneller, his quieter reputation in the annals of art history has been attributed to his modesty of character. This extended to characterise his work which has been described as possessing an "unassuming sincerity". Today, as modern viewers looking back on a past era, his accurate and unexaggerated rendering of his sitters brings us fascinatingly and pleasurably close to understanding his subjects as real individuals. His work, understated and quietly sophisticated, is also cited as typifying a distinctly English approach within the genre of portraiture. In 1681 Charles II appointed him 'painter and picture drawer in ordinary', the highest accolade a portrait artist could attain. He is said to have produced a portrait of Charles, now believed lost, that prompted the response: 'Is this like me? Then, odd's fish, I'm an ugly fellow." Unfortunately then for Charles, Riley was considered a master of depicting the face, and, by extension, character. The portrait offered here for sale is no exception. Though unidentified, we can glean much of our sitter through observation alone. Though her fine dress and fashionable adornment of strings of pearls obviously denote her as a high born, courtly lady, we can also potentially infer a gentle demeanour from the muted palette and the extraordinarily soft and delicate handling of her facial features and face framing curls. Riley makes much of her large, dark eyes which hold the viewer arrestingly in their gaze; the overall effect being that of an unostentatious but nonetheless striking young woman.

A TIBETAN GILT-BRONZE DENSATIL-STYLE SCULPTURE OF A BODHISATTVA C.15TH CENTURY The finely cast Bodhisattva stands in tribhanga asana and holds a ghanta (bell) in his left hand and a mala (rosary) in his right hand. He wears a diaphanous dhoti with pleated sashes. The jewellery (crown, earrings, necklace, armlets, bracelets) and belt are adorned with semi-precious stones, glass and rock crystal, together with a modern slate stand, 23.5cm, 1.2kg. (2) Provenance: a London collection since 2005. This sculpture exhibits a number of stylistic similarities to sculptures known to have been made for the Densatil Monastery (Central Tibet) between the late 14th and late 15th century, which indicate a connection to the Densatil artistic tradition. These include the facial type of the Bodhisattva, the design of the jewellery and of his jewelled belt, the extensive use of glass next to semi-precious stones and a strong Nepali artistic influence. Original vintage advertising poster promoting Eugene Tompkins production of The Black Crook featuring an illustration of a woman dancing with a tambourine next to a man in a suit with a bowler hat and a monocle. Jules Cheret (31 May 1836 – 23 September 1932) was a French painter and lithographer who became a master of Belle Époque poster art. He has been called the father of the modern poster. The Black Crook is a work of musical theatre first produced, with great success, in New York in 1866 based on a book by Charles M. Barras (1826–1873). The music, selected and arranged by Thomas Baker, consists mostly of adaptations, but it included some new songs composed for the piece, notably "You Naughty, Naughty Men". The story is a Faustian melodramatic romantic comedy, but the production became famous for its spectacular special effects and skimpy costumes. Lithograph printed by The Strobridge Lith Co. Fair condition, fold marks , several tears and creases, paper losses and punched holes in margin, several stains, backed on old linen. Country: USA Designer: Jules Cheret Year: 1872 Size (cm) 98x72
