Lot 394

Charles Jervas (Irish, circa 1675-1739) and John Wootton (British, 1682-1764) Portrait, presumed to be of, Robert Walpole, later 2nd Earl of Orford (1701-1751) standing, three-quarter length, holding a hunting whip and wearing the Insignia of the Order of the Bath, horses and hounds watering in a landscape beyond oil on canvas, in a fine contemporary carved and giltwood English frame 120 x 100cm (47 x 39in) Provenance: Presumably the sitter's aunt, Susan Hamond, of South Wootton and then from 1761 at Westacre High House, Norfolk and thence by descent to the present owner Other Notes: The identity of the sitter is apparently first proposed by Andrew Moore in "A Capital Collection: Houghton Hall and the Hermitage, with a Modern Edition of "Aedes Walpolianae", Horace Walpole's Catalogue of Sir Robert Walpole", Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, pub. 2002, where it is illustrated and attributed to John Wootton. Wootton's pictures of the sitter's father "Prime Minister" Walpole and 1st Earl of Orford, are invariably collaborations with Richardson, with the latter doing the portrait and Wootton the landscape. An attribution to Richardson here seems implausible. As the presumed sitter became Ranger of Richmond Park and a Knight of the Bath in 1725, it would seem more plausible that as this date exactly coincides with when Jervas is known to have been commissioned to paint portraits of his father and mother (see Lots 392 and 393) that this too is a work by Jervas and just like that pair it has descended from Susan Hamond, née Walpole, sister of the 1st Earl. It is believed there is a similar portrait at Houghton Hall, Norfolk; another similar portrait, according to the late Sir Oliver Millar and the present owner, was sold at Christie's, 28 April 1950 (Lot 81) as of an Unknown Nobleman and attributed to Wootton. Sir Oliver Millar in April 1961 doubted the Wootton attribution for the present painting. The present portrait will be included in Caroline Pegum's forthcoming catalogue raisonne on Charles Jervas. Label to the reverse incorrectly gives the sitter as Sir Robert Walpole, Prime Minster, father of the sitter No. 14 to the reverse. Oil on canvas which has been lined. The tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layer is in a good, stable condition. There are a few small paint losses. The varnish is matte and yellowed. There is a layer of surface dirt which includes mould spores. There are a few scattered areas of retouching which are slightly discoloured and mainly located in the background. The mitres of the frame are opened, some dirt and staining on the gilded surface.

Holt (Richard). A Short Treatise of Artificial Stone, as 'tis now made, and Converted into all Manner of Curious Embellishments, and Proper Ornaments, of Architecture: Containing the most Beautiful, the Strongest and the Cheapest Method of Adorning Buildings of all sorts. Being an Excellent and most useful Art, well known to the Ancients, but lost to the World for many ages, now retriev'd, 1st edition, 1730, woodcut headpieces and initials, some spotting, bookplate, all edges gilt, near contemporary black morocco gilt, a little rubbed, 8vo ESTC T85882; Harris BABW, 354. Scarce, only four institutional copies located. Holt, along with Thomas Ripley had patented 'artificial stone' (i.e. burnt clay) in 1722, and before long he was supplying patrons, including Lord Burlington (the book's dedicatee) for his villa and gardens in Chiswick. The book was published in response to Batty Langley's rival artificial stone business, set up in 1729, with the intention of attracting more patrons and claiming the material's great advantages over natural stone in durability, citing examples of Stonehenge, the pyramids and the Sphinx, the latter 'can scarcely be supposed to be made of modern brick'. Although no mention is made in the book or the patent of the ingredients of the compound, the recipe entrusted to John Mowbray and William Bridgeman in 1732 calls for finely ground glass and lead ores to be mixed with clay instead of the usual flint or sand. * Desiree Lucienne Lisbeth Dulcie Day (1917-2010):, A set of four 'Herb Anthony' pattern screen print cotton curtains circa 1956, titled to hem and also marked 'Lucienne Day', 140cm x 120cm. *Biography- Lucienne Day was born in Surrey and at the age of 17 studied at the Croyden School of Art where she took a great interest in printed fabrics and design. While at the Royal London College of Art, where she began to specialise in fabric design, she worked for two months at Sanderson in the wallpaper design section for the company. The experience of working for a very traditional and conservative company was no doubt at great odds to her desire to produce modern up to date designs. In 1949 she was commissioned by Heals to design floral fabrics and continued to do so until 1974. In 1951 she produced her most famous pattern 'Caylx' as one of several furnishing designs for the interior of the Homes & Gardens Pavilion at the Festival of Britain.

Paul Henry RHA (1876-1958) LANDSCAPE, WEST OF IRELAND, c.1915-1918 oil on board signed lower left; with Taylor Gallery, Belfast label on reverse 15.24 by 22in. (38.7 by 55.9cm) Montague family, County Tyrone, received as a wedding present in the 1940s; Coloured Rain Gallery, Templepatrick; Acquired by George McClelland, Esq.; Taylor Gallery, Belfast; Where purchased by the present owner Where purchased by the present owner This is possibly a scene in Achill Island which Henry first visited in 1911. When Henry first went to Achill, from late in 1911 until early in 1914, it was the people who caught his attention, but from around 1915 onwards it was the landscape itself which took his eye. This landscape may be painted from the south of the island. The structure of the landscape suggests that it was painted not far from Grace O'Malley's castle, close to the nearby cottage where Paul and Grace had wintered in 1914-15. The lower part of the scene is part taken up by the habitation with, in the foreground, the sea and the larger part dominated by the encroaching rain clouds which threaten the already dank landscape. The two parts are united by the upward thrust of the mountain, which is typical of Henry's compositional method for much of his career. It is a device he first mastered in drawings made during his early years in London (see, for example, his Water Meadows, 1907, Ulster Museum), and which served him well throughout his working life. The simple, almost abstract nature of the composition, the sense of stillness which prevails, and the limited palette employed remind us, too, of Henry's studentship in Paris under Whistler. The composition is similar to a number of other Henry pictures of the 1920s such as West of Ireland Landscape with Cottages, 1924-5, and The Village by the Lake 1925-30 (all private collections). The handling of the low-lying strip of ground in the distance, with its tiny fields and turf cuttings and, to the rear, a gentle rise which leads the eye to the mountain, and hence upwards to the menacing sky, which is the real subject of the picture, brings a theatricality to the whole scene. There is in Henry's work, as Seán Ó'Faoláin noted, 'none of the modern tendency to overplay one's hand-to force the painter's personality into the subject, to make all nature and all art nothing more than a vehicle for what is arrogantly called self-expression'. Rather, Henry's subject-matter remains paramount in importance, over and above his feelings for it, and that is why his work conveys so forcefully a sense of the universal in the scenes he painted. Dated c.1915-18 on stylistic grounds, in S. B. Kennedy's ongoing cataloguing of Paul Henry's oeuvre and numbered 1207. Dr S.B. Kennedy January 2018

Hafidh Al-Droubi (Iraqi, 1914-1991) BAGHDAD STREET SCENE, 1988 oil on canvas signed and dated in Arabic lower right; with location in English and inscribed in Arabic on reverse 36 by 19in. (91.4 by 48.3cm) A gift from the artist's widow to the present owner Born in Baghdad in 1914, Hafidh Al Droubi made several important contributions to the history of modern art in Iraq, including the establishment of Baghdad’s first free atelier in 1942 and the 1953 founding of the artist collective, The Impressionists. Dedicated to art education more so than a particular style or mode of working, the Impressionists encompassed artists practising in a variety of styles and techniques.Al Droubi’s own paintings are characterised by an interest in scenes of Iraqi daily life, executed in a technique that moved from an Impressionist focus on the effects of light on form to one that experimented with Cubism’s fragmentation of space.Like many of his predecessors and colleagues in the Arab world, Al Droubi travelled abroad to Rome in 1936 for training. In 1940, he returned to Baghdad for a few months before continuing his studies at London’s Goldsmith College, graduating in 1950. Upon his return to the Iraqi capital, he was an active member of the city’s growing art scene, chairing the Iraqi Plastic Artists for six years and serving as the dean of the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad.

(27.3 by 37.5cm) David Hendriks Gallery, Dublin; Estate of Theo McNab 'Cecil King Retrospective Exhibition', Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, Dublin, October to November 1981 Theo McNab was born in Dublin. He worked as a design consultant before exhibiting for the first time at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1971, where he was awarded the Carroll's prize. From 1973 he held one man shows at the David Hendriks Gallery. He exhibited extensively in Europe, the USA, China, Japan and Korea. In 1981 he became a member of Aosdána and was elected to the Toscaireacht (Supervisory Board) in 1985. He was Professor of Fine Art at the National College of Art & Design where he actively promoted international exchanges for staff and students under the Erasmus scheme. His work is underpinned by scientific order as found in nature, such as observation of the movement of the sun within a given period of time from a fixed position. He has said: "I do not wish my painting to be classified as abstract or otherwise. I am interested in our feelings about existence and our desire for order whether manifested in mythology, philosophy or mathematics. I transform these timeless concerns into landscapes reflecting personal experience".
