In 1692 the French Academy of Sciences set up a committee to establish standards for all crafts; as a result of which Jacques Jaugeon produced in 1695 a 'rational' design for letters, in which they all have a perfectly vertical axis and perfectly horizontal, symmetrical serifs, far removed from the more flowing forms of ancient or Renaissance lettering. Philippe Grandjean was commissioned to cut punches based on Jaugeon's designs, and modified them to form the 'roman du roi' first used here.

Janos Zsamboki (1531-1584), Hungarian physician and scholar, and author of an important early emblem book Emblemata cum aliquot nummis antiqui operis (1564), was employed as court phyisican by Emperor Maximilian II, and lived for most of his life in Vienna. His extensive library and collections of maps, coins and works of art later formed a significant part of the Austrian National Library. The remarkable engraved portraits by Pierre van der Borcht (1545-1608), according to the Wellcome Collection, 'may be regarded as authentic'. In the preface by Max Rooses to the facsimile edition of this work published in the series Maatschappij der Antwerpsche Bibliophilen in 1901, van der Borcht is credited not only with the engraving of the plates, but with the original drawings too: "La manie?re des gravures indique a? toute e?vidence que Pierre van de Borcht les exe?cuta a? l'eau-forte ... Tout permet d'affirmer que van der Borcht ne grava pas seulement, mais dessina e?galement les planches." The title to the present copy does not have the architectural outer border sometimes present, but does have the portrait of Becanus (no. 52) which is left blank in other copies of this edition.

Handwritten artist's label verso. Note: Newspaper article about the artist affixed verso. His career includes 22 solo exhibitions to date; in addition to numerous group shows both nationally and internationally. Among the awards received are the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy Guthrie Award for painting and the Royal Scottish Academy Morton Award. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Raab Gallery Berlin, The Scottish Gallery and at the Royal Scottish Academy for the Edinburgh International Festival contribution in 2010. A longstanding interest in continental aesthetics informs his pedagogical role as Course Director for Art, Philosophy and Contemporary Practices at the University of Dundee. Philip Braham is represented by the prestigious Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) and his most recent highly successful solo show "Closer to Home" at The Scottish Gallery (his sixth at the venue) was in January 2021. His work is held in a number of national collections in the UK including The National Portrait Gallery where he has two portraits, the UK Parliament and the Bank of England. His portrait of the former Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow hangs in the Speaker’s State Rooms at the Palace of Westminster. In 2004 he took part in "Being Present" at Jerwood Space, having just won the De Laszlo Prize for the best portrait by a young artist at the 2004 RP exhibition. Kelly was also commended several times in the BP Portrait Award before winning second prize in 2001 for Nude in a Nightclub. His paintings often begin with a desire to create a particular atmosphere through the use of artificial lighting. Kelly's website shows three fascinating videos which provide an insight into modern day painting techniques. The subjects are David Nish former CEO of Standard Life, General Sir Mike Jackson and "The Herat Room". The latter is an extraordinary short film about the thirteen months it took to complete a commission for the war in Afghanistan. The film reveals why Kelly is already a celebrated artist and why there's little doubt that that his star will continue to rise. brendankellyartist.co.uk/video

* PHILIP GURREY (BRITISH b. 1984), MENIPPUS oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated 2007 verso 180cm x 95cm Unframed. Note: British artist Philip Gurrey studied at Glasgow School of Art leaving with an BA and a MA to his name. Most of the time Gurrey explores history and politics in his art practice. He investigates through painting, initially, paying homage to specific historical movements and occurrences. Gurrey is influenced, importantly, by the contrast of the world we live in today. He bases his early work on the painted language of the Dutch golden age, in addition, he borrows directly from Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. Ultimately, Gurrey aims to sculpt a new vision of an age which saw power shifts, specifically, away from the King and religion, but towards trade and money. Historically considered by many as the birth of the modern society. Gurrey has many collectors across the world including the Mercer Art Gallery Collection and Fondation France.

* ADRIAN WISZNIEWSKI RSA HonFRIAS HRSW (SCOTTISH b 1958 - ), TUBER-BABES oil on canvas, signed and dated 2008 214cm x 183cm Unframed (as intended). Provenance: Acquired for a noted private London collection from The Lemon Street Gallery, Truro, Cornwall in 2008. A handwritten letter dated 10.11.08 by Wiszniewski to the owner accompanies this lot. Wiszniewski states: "I am really pleased that Tuber-babes has found its way into your collection. I began painting Tuber-babes in 2005, worked on it over a six-month period into 2006 and then left it until the beginning of 2008 when it was completed. The painting (process) can be a long one and I spend that time developing the subject matter - drawing and re-drawing. I was intrigued to see where the painting story might take me. What would be the pivotal point. The point of the painting Tuber-babes balances on the relationship of two worlds - the rural (earthiness) and the urban (urbane). The rural world is populated by the Tuber-babes, their children are of the earth and of nature and are linked umbilically with it. They are however dominated by the more sophisticated and elevated who look down on the Tuber-babes as curios. They survey them with a superior air in the way that ancient gods might from their mountain top. They smile and toy with their 'playthings' and use a pointer as an educational prop. The Tuber-babes, however, like all other 'vegetables' that populate the canvas have an energy and an unflappable life-force - a fact that might prove dangerous if it were denied. This point is underpinned by the view from the window; a garden recedes into farmland and to a horizon where the twin Trade Towers stand distant and aloof. Yours Adrian Wiszniewski". Note: Adrian Wiszniewski creates work characterised by a strong drawing element and fertile imagination. Populated with contemplative figures set in vividly coloured Arcadian landscapes, his paintings are rich with symbolic, political and philosophical depths. Adrian Wiszniewski (pronounced Vishnevski) was born in Glasgow in 1958 and studied architecture at The Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow 1975–79; then trained at Glasgow School of Art, 1979–83. Wiszniewski is one of the leading members of the New Glasgow Boys responsible for the revival and resurgence of figurative painting under the tutelage of Sandy Moffat OBE; a group of artists that included Steven Campbell, Ken Currie and Peter Howson. His multiple awards include the Haldane Trust Award in 1982, the David Cargill Scholarship in 1983, the Mark Rothko Memorial Award in 1984, the I.C.C.F. Best Design Award New York in 1993 and the Lord Provost Gold Medal from City of Glasgow in 1999. His work can be found in many international public collections including The Gallery of Modern Art in New York, The Metropolitan Museum, New York, The Setagaya Museum, Tokyo, Japan, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, Tate Britain, London and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Wiszniewski has had numerous major solo exhibitions over many years including in London, Sydney, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ghent and Tokyo.

Sigmar Polke*, unique, Mixed Media on cardboardSigmar Polke*, (1941-2010)1984Ohne Titel (Mönchengladbach 1983). Unikat. Sigmar Polke*, unique, Mixed Media on cardboardSigmar Polke*, (1941-2010)1984Untitled (Mönchengladbach 1983). Unique piece. Colored synthetic resin lacquers and gouache over four-color offset lithograph on light cardboard based on a motif of his own. 65 x 92 cm. From a series of 30 unique pieces. Signed and dated S. Polke 84 lower left. The present one-of-a-kind work was published as an annual edition of the Mönchengladbach Museum Association in 1983 as part of a limited series.Sigmar Polke is considered one of the most important German post-war artists. After completing his training as a glass painter, he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Karl Otto Götz and Gerhard Hoehme. Together with his colleagues Gerhard Richter, Konrad Lueg and Manfred Kuttner, Polke founded what they called Capitalist Realism, a new art style in which they were concerned with rejecting the established art business. In 1999 Polke exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and after his death the museum dedicated a retrospective to him in 2014.Polke's extensive work includes works in a wide variety of techniques. These are characterized by an unconventional and experimental approach to various media and materials, such as his lacquer and poured pictures from the 1980s. In the present work, Polke uses an offset lithograph of his own work as a basis and creates a unique work through the not completely controllable and random process of dripping and pouring color material. None of the works created in this limited edition are alike, all of them differ significantly both in the choice of colors and in their order and are therefore unique.Literature: Jürgen Becker und Claus von der Osten, Sigmar Polke, Die Editionen 1963 - 2000 Werkverzeichnis, S. 198–199und 419, Nr. 57 (Abb. ein anderes Exemplar).
