Following his marriage, Matheson purchased the Isle of Lewis for over half a million pounds in 1844 where he built Lews Castle. In 1851, he settled on the island with Mary Jane and was made a baronet that same year. Matheson served as MP for Ashburton from 1843 to 1852 and for Ross and Cromarty from 1852 to 1868. The Mathesons had no children, so when Sir James died, the baronetcy became extinct, and Mary Jane remained on the estate caring for her mother. There is a long vertical crack running from the bottom edge across the sitter's coat and his left shoulder and into the sky, ending approximately at his eye level. Some spotting in the background. The thicker paint layer in the background near the edges has developed some pronounced cracks and there are some small losses. Second - there is evident warping to the ivory along the sides. Small loss lower right corner. A scuff top left corner. Not examined out of frame.
