Following his marriage, Matheson purchased the Isle of Lewis for over half a million pounds in 1844 where he built Lews Castle. In 1851, he settled on the island with Mary Jane and was made a baronet that same year. Matheson served as MP for Ashburton from 1843 to 1852 and for Ross and Cromarty from 1852 to 1868. The Mathesons had no children, so when Sir James died, the baronetcy became extinct, and Mary Jane remained on the estate caring for her mother.
