A mid-19th century scrap album, most likely made up by Alfred Swaine Taylor's daughter Edith when she was still a child. This was rescued in an extremely damp, mildewed condition, and has dried gently at room temperature, which has resulted in some items becoming loose in the album and some remaining fixed. Still fixed on a page near the back is a salt print of a Rembrandt etching, a creased photograph of a family group dated 1853 in pencil below, and a small indistinct image. In four protective plastic sleeves are six more images that were loose in the album, including one of Alfred Swaine Taylor inscribed on the reverse of the backing card 'Collen June 1843' which may be a salt print re-touched by handCollen may refer to Henry Collen, who was miniature portrait painter to Queen Victoria and Fox Talbot's first licensed photographer. It is known that he corresponded with Taylor around this time. In fact, Taylor borrowed Collen's camera so that he could have his own version made.
