Together with another portrait miniature, British school (late 19th/early 20th Century), portrait of a lady, probably ivory, 5.5 x 4cm approx. (2)(B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: Both appearing in good original condition. No serious damage. Rather grubby, neither have been opened.

William Wood painted miniature copies of this work, and a portrait of Prince William Henry, 1st Duke of Gloucester (1743-1805), at Beechey's request. 18th Century Miniature Portrait of Captain John Warren a veteran of Minden, Culloden and with Wolfe at Quebec. A fine quality head and shoulder portrait of Captain Warren, wearing scarlet tunic, with buff facings to the collar. Mounted into a fine quality gold coloured glazed mount, probably originally worn as a bracelet and then converted to a pendant. The reverse with fine quality engraving “Captn John Warren of Longhill House Co. Killkenny. Died aged 96 in the year 1816. He fought at Minden and Culloden and was present with Wolfe at Quebec” Painting colours good, engraving clear. Height 4.5cm.
A late 17th / early 18th century Chinese carved soapstone figure of Li Tieguai. The bearded figure is dressed in a flowing robe and leaning against a crutch. Along with a portrait miniature, gouache on card after Horace Taylor. The sitter, Claude Calthrop, is depicted with the soapstone statue. Statue 17cm. Provenance; Claude David Usticke Calthrop (1893-1921) First Secretary General of the Rhineland High Commission, Coblenz, by whom the statue was probably purchased in Switzerland or Germany. Obvious losses to the statue. Head probably repaired at the neck.
William Charles Ross R. A. (1794-1860) portrait miniature on ivory in brass wirework frame. Depicting a seated maiden in Classical setting. With an arrow in her hair and wearing a red velvet dress with pearl brooch. Signed Ross, 8cm x 6cm. Good condition. No inscriptions to the back. Sitter unknown.
A GROUP OF FOUR PORTRAIT SILHOUETTES, 19th CENTURY AND LATER, one reverse-printed on glass of a lady in a high lace collar, a pair of a boy and girl facing sinister, gilt-highlighted, the fourth of a lady in elaborate coiffure, each in an ebonised frame; together with a portrait miniature of a lady in the manner of Stieler, oval, in an ivorine frame. (5) First overall 13cm by 11cm
THOMAS DAY (c.1752-c.1807) Portrait of Commodore Edward Thompson (1738-1786) wearing a blue uniform with white and gold braid, gold and enamel frame, circa 1782, 4 x 3cm Edward Thompson was the son of a merchant from Hull. He was educated at Beverley and Hampstead before joining the Navy in around 1755. He enjoyed an eventful career, where he not only served in the Caribbean and off the Coast of West Africa, but was also court-martialled and acquitted twice. Alongside his naval activities, he pursued a career as a poet and playwright. Described as 'an agreeable and gentlemanlike companion', he was known throughout the Navy, due to his reputation as a wit, as well as his literary achievements in London society, as 'Poet Thompson'. A fractionally larger version of this miniature by Day, signed and dated 1782, was sold at Sothebys 24 October 1988, lot 291 Prov: Anonymous sale, Christie's London, 21 March 1978, lot 12 Sothebys sale 'Important Miniatures from a Private Collection' London 16 April 2008 Lot 38 and from where the above footnote is taken
