George Engleheart (London 1750-1829)A portrait miniature of a gentleman said to be Theobold Wolfe Tone (1763-1798), wearing a blue coat, white waistcoat, stock and tied cravat, his wig powdered. Watercolour on ivory, gold frame, the reverse with a navette-shaped hairwork compartment, within a surround of blue glass studded with eight rose-cut diamonds. Throughout his political career, Tone was involved in a number of military engagements against the British navy. He was active in drawing Irish Catholics and Protestants together in the United cause, and in soliciting French assistance for a general insurrection. In November 1798, on his second attempt to land in Ireland with French troops and supplies, he was captured by British naval forces. The United Irish risings of the summer had already been crushed. Tone died in advance of his scheduled execution, probably, as modern scholars generally believe, by his own hand. Later generations were to regard Tone as the father of Irish Republicanism and his grave in Bodenstown, County Kildare, is the site of annual commemorations. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: Y ФY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the UK, see clause 13.Ф This lot contains or is made of ivory and cannot be imported into the USA or any country within the EU.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Frances travelled with her husband throughout his entire tour of duty across America, Continental Europe and eventually Ceylon. In 1781, the Doyles were captured together with Lord Rawdon when sailing home to England aboard the 'Cormorant'. In his Journal entry for 27 September, Baron von Closen referred to a rumour from America of Mrs Doyle's affair with Lord Rawdon and how he found Lieutenant-Colonel Doyle to have been 'a very easy-going fellow', suggesting that the affair might have been accepted by her husband. After several negotiations, Lieutenant-Colonel Doyle was exchanged for 'Sieur Ternan' and the Doyles finally reached English soil in 1782.Despite the alleged affair with Rawdon, Frances and Welbore went on to have three children. Their sons, Francis Hastings (1783-1839) and Carlo (b.1787) both became Major Generals in the army. The former became a baronet in 1828. The latter was born whilst the Doyles were stationed in Warsaw. The first finished on 14 February and delivered on 22nd February (costing £5 and £5/10/- for the frame). The second began on 15 February, finished on 21 February and delivered on 28 February (costing £10/10/- presumably for both miniature and frame). Both miniatures were framed by Flower. The overlapping time frame of the two miniatures implies that Wood was commissioned right from the beginning to paint two versions. In his fee book, Wood describes the sitter as, 'about 38 years old, shows chiefly right side and looking on'.In this portrait miniature, Henry Davis is wearing his Lieutenant Colonel uniform - a rank he obtained in the 25th Light Dragoons in January 1800. In May of the same year he was promoted to Major. In June 1799 Colonel Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, raised a military force in the north of Mysore, comprising the 25th Light Dragoons and the 73rd and 77th Regiments of Foot. Details of Lieutenant Colonel Davis' military history are limited but it is fair to assume, he served as part of this operation. Ann rejoined Captain Deane at Calcutta, and the couple lived in India for a further ten years. Captain Deane was employed by the East India Company as a District Collector and Ann accompanied him on several long tours of the Company's recently acquired northern provinces in Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Ann returned to England in 1814, possibly as a result of escalating tensions between the East India Company and the Maratha Confederacy, which culminated in the Third Anglo-Maratha War of 1817-18.
