A Superb 19th Century French Carved Ivory Powder Box With Portrait Miniature To Lid Signed Claveau Wonderful circular box with intricately carved floral and foliate swag detail terminating at empty cartouche to sides, and carved, beaded border to lid. Glazed portrait miniature to lid depicting a finely attired noblewoman in powdered wig, feathered hat and lace mantle typical of ladies high fashion circa 1780. Attributed to Peter Paillou (1757-1832) - Miniature shoulder length portrait of Eliza Stirling, her hair in ringlets wearing a black dress with white puff sleeves, on ivory, in gilt metal oval frame with chased foliate frame and glazed, the reverse with aperture revealing plaited hair, 2.5ins x 1.625ins overall Note: Eliza is recorded as residing in Rothesay and afterwards Stirling in Scotland. She was the sister-in-law of John Montgomery of Trinidad. Her name appears on a list of people who had an address in Scotland and were awarded compensation for slaves they owned. Early 19th Century English school - Miniature shoulder length portrait of William IV wearing the garter robes and gold chain, with pillar to left background, on ivory, in gilt metal octagonal frame and glazed, surmounted by a crown, 3.5ins x 2ins Note: William IV (1765-1837) was King of Great Britain and Ireland, and of Hanover from 26th June 1830 until his death. He was the third son of George III and younger brother and successor to George IV - last King and penultimate monarch of the House of Hanover. He served in the Royal Navy in his youth and was, during his reign and afterward, nicknamed "The Sailor King". He served in North America and the Caribbean but saw little actual fighting. Since his two older brothers died without leaving legitimate issue, he inherited the throne when he was 64 years old.
