Hampton, carver, gilder & picture frame maker, 1a Huntly Street, Aberdeen (with his printed label to verso of each), frame size 30.5 x 26.5 cm QTY: (2)NOTE:Robert Field (1769-1819) was born in London, trained at the Royal Academy and in 1794 moved to the United States. He joined a group of artists led by Charles Willson Peale in establishing the Columbianum, or American Academy of the Fine Arts. He refined his talent as a miniature portrat artist for 14 years in the U.S. painting members of high society and political life such as George and Martha Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In 1800 he was commissioned by Martha Washington to paint a group of miniatures as mementoes for friends and family after the first anniversary of the death of George Washington. According to art historian Daphne Foskett (A Dictionary of British Miniature Painters, 1972), Field was 'one of the best American miniaturists of his time'. In 1908 he went to Nova Scotia.

Sarah was born into a poor family, and, determined not to be a burden on her parents, she learnt to use a pen, paintbrush, needle, and scissors, before the age of ten, using her mouth and right arm stump. She began her career exhibiting her skills as a curiosity, touring the country with a travelling fair, billed as ‘The Limbless Wonder’. Her fame spread and she came to the notice of the Earl of Morton who became her patron, sponsoring her to study at the Royal Academy and helping her to secure commissions from members of the aristocracy as well as the royal family. That a disabled woman from a humble background in the 19th century was able to become a celebrated professional artist is testament to her perseverance and resilience. Sarah Biffin’s miniature portraits have become increasingly sought after, and in 2019 one of her self-portraits sold at Sotheby’s for £110,000 hammer price. The portrait offered here is somewhat unusual in showing the sitter with her hair flowing loose, which lends it a certain intimacy, and the artist’s presentation inscription on the back shows that Miss Biffin evidently knew Mrs Parry quite well.

AN ENGlSH EMBROIDERED SILKWORK PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF CHARLES I AFTER AN ENGRAVING BY WENECLAUS HOLLARSecond half 17th Century Depicted wearing a lace collar and the Order of the Garter, with a metal thread border, mounted in a silver metal frame with spiral twist crest, red leather travelling case, 9cm high overallA comparable can be made to a finer example in the MET Museum, New York (accession 39.13.7). The MET example has a reference to Psalm 18, v 2-3 embroidered to the outer edge. It is noted that lesser examples are known in public and private collections, evidence that a small industry sprang up around the cult of the 'Martyr King' after 1649 - the execution of Charles I. These embroidered commemorative objects were probably made in a workshop setting. The portrait is after a larger Anthony van Dyck formal court portrait of Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria of 1632, which was then engraved by Wenceslas Hollar in 1641 and in turn reproduced and proliferated in print. Condition report: Possibly made as part of a small cottage industry in reproducing images of the beheaded Charles I.Fading overall, notably some of the colours will have discoloured and the metal thread to the border discoloured and moved. Some small holes in areas, notably in small areas to the collar and a small hole to the left side next to the border. This includes an area to where there is little vertical stitching and only areas of horizontal thread. In particular, some worn away areas to the left side of the collar and a third on the right side where some vertical thread is loose. There is also a worn area to the left sleeve. The border also looks dislodged in some areas.The frame is tarnished in areas. The case with wear and tears, particularly to the top where the twirly finial protrudes out. We recommend viewing this lot to be fully satisfied

Miniature portrait of a gentleman holding a book, a representation suggesting an intellectual or literary figure of his time. The painting on ivory is finely detailed, with special attention to the textures of the clothing and facial features. Framed with a wooden frame adorned with golden motifs, this portrait is a showcase of refined 19th-century art, possibly created in Spain. 11x10

A Great War gold memorial locket of Lieutenant R. G. Hunter, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders A fine locket by Solomon Blanckensee & Son. Ltd., 35mm, gold (9ct., 13.92g, hallmarks for Birmingham 1918) with top wearing loop, rose gold to exterior, yellow gold to interior, bearing the Regimental crest of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders engraved to obverse and monogram 'R.G.H.' to reverse, with miniature portrait of the recipient to interior in full officer's dress uniform with tied lock of hair mounted behind glass lunettes, further engraved to interior 'Lieut R. G. Hunter, 7th. A. & S. H. Born 26 Sept. 1892, Fell at Roeux, France, 23 Apl. 1917.’, extremely fine £300-£400 --- Robert Gibson Hunter was born in Falkirk on 26 September 1892, the youngest son of iron works founder Robert Hunter of Glenfuir Mansion House, Falkirk. Educated at Morrison's Academy, Crieff, and Edinburgh University, he graduated Master of Arts (1913) and took employment as a law apprentice with Messrs. Miller Thomson and Co., in Edinburgh. A member of the University O.T.C., Hunter began the process of studying for a Bachelor of Law degree in 1914, but this was soon placed on hold upon his appointment to a commission in the 7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, in February 1915. Posted to France 28 July 1915, Hunter was advanced Lieutenant in 1916 and was killed in action in command of "A" Company, 7th Battalion, on the Western Front. A contemporary newspaper article adds a little more information: 'In a letter to the recipient's mother, his C.O. wrote: "It is with the greatest regret that I have to tell you that your son was killed on the 23rd April 1917 while gallantly leading his Company in the attack. He was doing splendidly, and was proving himself a most capable officer, while his cheery disposition always encouraged the men. We will all feel his loss very much...' Hunter is buried at Level Crossing Cemetery in the Pas-de-Calais, France. A short while later his mother would hear the news that another son, Captain Archibald Smith Hunter M.C., was killed on 29 August 1918, her third child lost to war following the death of Lieutenant John Hunter during the South African Campaign in 1900. Sold with a copied photograph of the recipient in military uniform from which the miniature portrait was posthumously modelled.
