ENGLISH SCHOOL, circa 1580 An oval portrait miniature of a lady, traditionally identified as Margaret, Duchess of Parma, oil on copper, 3" x 2.5", in an early giltwood frame carved with a winged cherub above scrolling foliage and a floral wreath, 7" high overall.Margaret, Duchess of Parma, was the illegitimate daughter of Charles V of Spain.Provenance: Private collection, Sherborne, Dorset.The painted surface is a little dirty but appears to be in quite good condition. The frame appears intact with some minor losses to the surface gilt.

A Framed Gilt Metal Portrait Miniature, by Sir William Charles Ross R.A., (1794 - 1860) depicting Miss Grace Ker Seymer, seated half length wearing a white dress, and striped wrap, with remnants of a label attached to the back board, with inscription `Miss Grace Ker Seymer, afterwards Mrs William F Webber by Ross`, painted on ivory 10.5cm x 8.5cm. The artist exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1809 - 1859. He worked for a time at the Portuguese Court and became an RA in 1842. He was in great demand not only with the Aristocracy but also English and European Royalty. His sitters included Queen Victoria, and The Prince Consort, King Louis Philippe of France, Prince Louis Napoleon and the Empress Eugenie.
