PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF MARIA DE' MEDICI, OIL ON COPPER, H 9 1/4" L 7 1/2",After Scipione Pulzone (Neapolitan, 1544-1598) or Frans Pourbus the Younger (Flemish, 1569-16122). Portrait miniature of Maria de' Medici. Oil on copper. Depicting bust portrait of Maria de' Medici, queen of France. Described in pencil on verso in Italian. Verso also illegibly stamped, and having illegible ink writing. Possibly signed to back "Maria Rossi". Height 9 1/4", length 7 1/2". Please note - the artist of the original portrait after which this lot is modeled is currently unknown. Scholars currently believe that the particular portrait of Maria de' Medici was created by Scipione Pulzone or by Frans Pourbus the Younger. There is a layer of grime on the surface of the portrait. There are some very minor areas of paint loss, specifically to subject's cheek, and around the edge of the portrait, where the frame rubs against the copper. The glass also has a layer of grime on it, making the portrait appear unfocused. Overall, in good condition (MK).- For High Resolution Photos visit Dumouchelles website.
