ENGLISH SCHOOL IN THE 17TH CENTURY MANNER "Gentleman in black shirt and white lace collar", a miniature portrait study, head and shoulders, watercolour, unsigned, 6.5 cm x 5.1 cm, housed in a plain ebonised frame(Provenance: the property of the Raymond Barker family late of Fairford Park Gloucestershire) CONDITION REPORTS Over all condition good though with some scuff marks to the edge where the picture has come in contact with the frame. Some dirt to the sitter's face around his left eye, above and below, and to his chin right-hand side. Backing of old playing card appears in poor condition with staining and water marking. An 18th century portrait miniature mounted gold ring, depicting a gentleman wearing a green jacket, with red collar and white cravat. A star order partly visible. Glazed. 1.8cm high. Fluted shank with fleur-de-lys style shoulders. Size J. And a late 18th century miniature painting mounted gold ring. Depicting a young lady with her hair tied up in a band and exposing her right breast. Glazed. Blue and white enamel border. The painting 1.7cm high. Size O.
A fine two-sided Miniature, the obverse depicting a quarter-length head and shoulders portrait of a late 18th century lady dressed in blue, the glazed reverse void, the yellow metal frame and suspension decorated in blue and white enamel bands mounted with twelve seed pearls (6.5 cm diameter) CONDITION REPORT: The front of the miniature appears in generally in very good order with slight marks to the upper side of the frame at the top over the curly hair appearing to be possibly water marks, the blue enamel appears to be in good order and the twelve seed pearls are all present and intact, the reverse of the piece is also glazed and the material (under glass) exhibits two diagonal marks (see image), the outer frame is also somewhat tarnished.

She died on 27 January 1867 in Powderham Castle, Devon. She was buried on 2 February 1867 in Powderham Castle, Devon. Parents: 1st Earl Fortescue Hugh Fortescue and Hester Grenville. Spouse: Viscount William Reginald Courtney 11th Earl of Devon. Lady Elizabeth Fortescue of Castle Hill and Viscount William Reginald Courtney 11th Earl of Devon were married on 27 December 1830.Joseph Osmond Barnard was born in Portsmouth, England in 1816. He arrived in Mauritius in 1838. A year later he married a young woman of Dutch origin. An advertisement in a local newspaper Le Cern‚en of March 9, 1839 described Barnard as a miniature painter and engraver. Although he had little experience in engraving miniature portraits, his attempts to engrave the Queen's head were surprisingly successful. The one penny orange-red and the deep blue two pence, Post Office stamps engraved on copper plate by Barnard were put for sale on September 22, 1847. Barnard died in 1865 at his Sugar Estate, purchased in 1862 near Grand Port.
