A late 18th century French circular blond tortoiseshell boite ˆ miniatures with a gold mounted mother of pearl cover set with seven miniature portraits (behind glass) and inset with four fleur-de -lys motifs the central portrait probably depicting King Louis XVIflanked by some of his contemporaries 2.9in (7.4cm).
MINIATURE ON IVORY. Double sided locket with a portrait of a woman with wispy blonde hair wearing a light blue hooded cloak. Initialed H.F.F. and lined with silver foil. The other side has a carved tortoise shell frame surrounding a central ivory medallion that has a woman reading before a classical plinth, all in white and blue. Gold filled frame has minor wear, the tortoise shell has cracks. 2 7/8h.
Joachim Smith British 1737-1814 Portrait bust of a gentleman signed J.S Fecit and dated 1771 wax with polychrome decoration the miniature bust on a painted glass ground contained within an ebonsised moulded circular frame together with two wax miniature portait busts after James Tassie 1735-1799 circa 1900 both signed Tassie one inscribed 'Mrs Anne Stewart Edin. [Edinburgh] 1795' and the other inscribed 'Robert Adam Architect died 4 March 1792 in his 64 year' (3) diam. 17cm. and the other two h.16.5cm. w.14cm. Joachim Smith (1737-1814) was a not only a wax modeller but sculptor and cameo engraver. He started his professional working life in 1773 for Josiah Wedgewood and is recorded as working with wax during this period. He went onto produce wax portraits from life for use as models for gem cutters and engravers. His fame grew to the point where he was able to exhibit twenty-eight wax portraits at the Royal Acacdemy in 1793/4. Like his comtemporary Tassie he enjoyed great success as a modeller of notables and fashionable figures of the day. Literature For further reading on both Smith and Tassie see E.J. Stuart Memorabilia. A rare 18th century Jacobite giltmetal and painted circular snuff box with concealed miniature, English or Scottish, the slightly domed lid flat chased with a border of scrolls and foliage in a milled bezel, hinged to reveal a miniature of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788), painted in oil on tin, the sides and underside painted with the Stuart tartan, 7.5cm diam, mid 18th c (see illustrations) ++ The gilding on the lid mostly worn off, the miniature in good condition with peripheral flaking, not affecting the portrait, the painted tartan decoration to the sides and underside of the box largely worn away, the interior of the box rather rusty and worn into a hole at 3 o'clock but a rare and evocative genuine contemporary 18th c object made for a Jacobite sympathiser and rare.
