Snuffbox with miniature portrait, Paris 1798-1809, gold. Very fine 18 kt. gold snuff box with an oval hand-painted miniature portrait of a lady with a musical instrument on the hinged lid. This portrait contains an enamelled cartouche with leaf motifs which is also applied to the outer edge. In between chiselled with lozanges in checkerboard pattern. The side is divided into panels with the same patterns. The intermediate pieces, upper edge and lower edge are also enamelled. The underside contains the same decoration as the lid (excluding the portrait). France, Paris, 1798-1809, hallmarks: Departmental hallmark 1798-1809 (chicken), chicken head 3 (unofficial hallmark used by Parisian goldsmiths on their gold products of the 2nd title, often luxury pieces), unknown maker's mark (LFB with zither or fan), eagle's head re-hallmark (fineness hallmark for products of at least 750 gold) - excellent condition. 141.1 grams, 18 kt. In 1777, when Lawrence was only eight years old, he drew a miniature of Knight's neighbour Charles Pepys, and the drawing remains in the Knight family collection (see Garlick, 1964, p.240). Garlick records that Lawrence's portrait of Elizabeth was unfinished, and the present work was clearly completed by a later hand.

Reuben Ward Binks (1880-1950), an enamel stick pin, circa 1917 topped with an oval enamel portrait of an English Bulldog within a rope twist border, the reverse inscribed ‘Aldridge Acquitania' signed R Ward Binks, dated 1917, length 5.5cm, enamel miniature 18 x 17mmReuben Ward Binks (1880-1950) was a celebrated miniature painter of the early 20th century, who specialised in canine portraits. His subjects included Edward VII's beloved terrier Caesar (also famously immortalised in a hardstone study by Fabergé), followed by dogs belonging to four generations of the British Royal Family, and 150 dogs for the Maharajah of Patiala, which he traveled to India to paint in 1925. The pedigree for the English Bulldog Aldridge Acquitania, the subject of the present stick pin, is available online, her birthdate recorded as 5th December 1913. In good condition, skilfully painted, some minor scratches, the portrait miniature probably later mounted in to the stick pin. Pin slightly off centre. Signature and inscription to reverse in good condition, some minor wear. Samuel Shelley (1750-1808?), a portrait miniature of Viscount Augustus Keppel 1st Viscount Keppel (1725-1786) in an officers uniform, gold bordered blue coat, white frilled cravat and powdered hair en queue, approx. 85 x 70mm, presented in an ornate frame Keppel, approx. 80mm, framed. Biographical note: Samuel Shelley was born in Whitechapel in 1750 and primarily self-taught. He entered the Royal Academy School in 1774 where he was influenced by the work of Sir Joshua Reynolds. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1774-1804. His work included oil paintings and watercolours but is most remembered for his miniature portraits, many of which are housed in notable British Museums. Mouth and Foot Painting Artist.- Biffin (Sarah) After. Miss S. Biffin. Born at East Quantox-head, near Bridgewater, Somersetshire. Without hands or arms, engraving on laid paper by R. Sievier, sheet 330 x 265 mm (13 3/4 x 10 1/2 in), trimmed within the platemark, minor surface dirt with light spotting, inset at edges into mount, unframed, published by Biffin, 1821; together with another portrait after a lost self-portrait by Sarah Biffin of 1823, lithograph by H. Grévedon after Sarah Biffin, 255 x 215 mm (10 x 8 1/2 in), spotting and surface dirt, inset at edges into mount, published by Engelmann, [1823]; and a trimmed duplicate of the latter (3) *** Sarah Biffin (1784-1850) was born in Somerset with no arms and vestigial legs. She learned to paint using her mouth and was apprenticed to an Emmanuel Dukes, who exhibited her work throughout England. In 1808 she came to the attention of George Douglas, Earl of Morton, who sponsored her to receive lessons from the RA painter William Craig. The Society of Arts awarded her a medal for a historical miniature in 1821, and the Royal Academy accepted her paintings. The Royal Family commissioned her to paint miniature portraits of them. When the Earl of Morton died in 1827 Biffin was left without a noble sponsor and she ran into financial difficulty. However, Queen Victoria awarded her a Civil List pension and she retired to a private life in Liverpool, where she died on 2nd October 1850 at the age of 66.
