An 18th century gold mounted ivory box, inset with a miniature portrait by: Gervase Spencer (c.1715-1763), of a young lady, half length, in a black dress hung with pearls, white chemise and a black feathered hat, signed with initials and dated 1749, on ivory, oval 4.7 x 3.8cm, box 11cm long CONDITION REPORT: Later mirror and relining to interior. Ivory doesn't sit flush to the gold mounts at one end. Splits to both ends of box - see images. No other major faults but the box has been restored: Interior has been relined and has new glass. The miniature and the box generally has been cleaned, scratch mark numbers to rim.

Tested as approximately 18ct gold Henry Norreys Esq. was a Justice of the Peace for the County of Lancaster and married in 1779. Possibly painted at the time of his marriage. CONDITION REPORT: Light surface wear comensurate with age. An open box to each side, tongues deficient.
