An early Victorian miniature portrait of Mr John Hartly, painted by Thomas Heathfield Carrick (of Carlyle) exhibited Royal Academy, 1841-1860. Painted on marble in a glazed leather covered case, 4.5in. (11.5cm) x 5.25in. (13.5cm). * In 1845, Thomas Carrick received a medal from the Prince Consort for inventing the method of painting on marble. He was a friend of Charles Dickens, Samuel Lover & Walter Jerrold, and included among his sitters Thomas Allom, Charles Kean, Daniel O'Connell, Samuel Rogers, William Wordsworth & Longfellow.
