Rene Theodore Berthon (1776-1859): Madonna of the Rosary, oil on canvas, dated 1845Work: 223 x 180 cm Frame: 246 x 205 cm The date rather difficult to read,although it is without any doubt in the 1840's. Rene Theodore Berthon (1776-1859) was a French painter, born in Tours in 1776 and died in Paris.He studied under the famous painter Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825). He painted portraits and religious and historical subjects, which gained him a certain reputation in the days of the First Empire and the Restoration. Some of his paintings are part of the Versailles collection. (link) He was the father of the portrait painter George Theodore Berthon, who emigrated to England and Canada, and the miniature painter Sidonie Berthon.

R.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaves (Col. T. C. Ekin.); Jubilee 1897, silver, unnamed as issued; Coronation 1911, unnamed as issued; Volunteer Force Long Service Medal, E.VII.R. (Lt. Col: T. C. Ekin, 3 London V.R.C.) engraved naming, mounted as worn; together with the related miniature awards (the 1914-15 Star substituted by a 1914 Star); the recipient’s helmet plate, this with some corrosion; and a National Reserve London silver lapel badge, contact marks to the Jubilee Medal, and area of corrosion to the Coronation Medal, otherwise very fine and better (6) £800-£1,000 --- Tom Charles Ekin was born in 1860 and was first commissioned Lieutenant in the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry, on 21 April 1886. Transferring to the 3rd City of London Volunteer Rifle Corps, he was promoted Captain on 11 October 1890; Major on 3 July 1897; and Lieutenant-Colonel and honorary Colonel on 26 March 1902. Following the re-organisation of the Territorial Army on 1 April 1908, Ekin’s unit was re-badged and renamed as the 7th (City of London) Battalion, London Regiment. He briefly served with the 2/1st Battalion, London Regiment during the Great War in Gallipoli from September 1915. His M.I.D. is unconfirmed. In civilian life, Ekin was a civil engineer, and was an early pioneer in electricity transmission. He died in 1944. Sold with the following archive: i) The recipient’s pre-Great War riband bar, cap badge, and rank insignia; ii) Commission Document appointing Tom Charles Ekin a Lieutenant in the Volunteer forces, dated 15 April 1886; iii) Certificate appointing Tom Charles Ekin a Member of he Institution of Civil Engineers, dated 16 February 1904, and congratulatory letter on the occasion of his 50th Anniversary as an Associate Member of the Institution, dated 27 April 1939; iv) Certificate from the Council of Legal Education named to Tom Ekin ascertaining his fitness to be called to the Bar, dated 11 January 1899; v) Various letters and Certificates of Appointment relating to the recipient’s appointment as an Inspector of the Local Government board; vi) Various letters written to the recipient in his professional capacity, including those from the Home Office and the Ministry of Health; vii) Various papers and reports relating to electrical supply in, amongst other places, South London, East Anglia, and Leicestershire; viii) Various mathematical table books, hand-written logarithmic tables, and other formulaic calculations; ix) A copy of the recipient’s paper ‘Water Pipe and Sewer Discharge Diagrams’, 1908; x) Three portrait photographs of the recipient, and other ephemera.

A Victorian portrait miniature on ivory, indistinctly signed G LAP... depicting a lady with spaniel, marked to rear Lady Mears. 14 x 10 cm and in a gilt frame with swag and hanging loop to the top. NOTE: This item has been assigned an ivory exemption certificate QCX9EQMH (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The picture is generally in very good order. There is some dirt behind the glass and the whole thing could benefit from a good clean. There are some paint flakes to the bottom left-hand side where the signature is which should be visible on the image.

EWART GILK...', in glazed ornate gilt gesso frame with scrolled corners, of the period, canvas dimensions: 58 x 92 cm, frame dimensions: 84 x 117.5 x 13 cm.Provenance: Private collection of a descendent of the Palairet family. The inscribed label verso bears initials of the owner's relative, probably being - British Diplomat Sir (Charles) Michael Palairet (1882-1956) who was the grandson of Captain Septimus Henry Palairet (1807-1854, late Captain of Her Majesty's twenty ninth Regiment of Foot of Bradford, Wiltshire). Septimus Palairet was one of three brothers: John Gwalter Palairet (1797-1878) and Samuel Charles Palairet (1798-?) and one of whom may be the subject of this portrait.Giovanni Battista Canevari was a neoclassical painter who studied under Pietro Benvenuti at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He fought in the 1813-14 Napoleonic wars then, in 1824, settled in Rome where this portrait was painted.Canevari was renowned for his miniature portraits and greatly influenced by English miniaturists. He was popular amongst English travellers and produced oil portraits influenced by Italian and Dutch masters. His pupils included Richard Buckner and Crispini.

The date of the work would suggest Maria Eleanor Villiers, Countess of Clarendon (23 January 1761 – 18 March 1844), formerly Maria Eleanor Forbes, the wife of John Villiers, 3rd Earl of Clarendon.Maria was the daughter and co-heir of Admiral Hon. John Forbes and his wife, the former Lady Mary Capell, daughter of William Capell, 3rd Earl of Essex. Her mother and the earl's mother being sisters, she and the earl were first cousins. They married on 5 January 1791, and had one daughter, Mary-Harriet, who never married and died in 1838.The earl died in 1838 and was succeeded by his nephew. The countess died, aged 83, at Clarendon House, North Audley Street, Westminster.A miniature portrait of the countess was painted on ivory by Richard Cosway.***CONDITION REPORT***A few tiny dirt specks, slightly loose in the frame.
