An early 19th Century swing dressing mirrorThe bowfront base raised ogee bracket feet and set with one long drawer and two short drawers, the tapered upright vertical members flanked with brass urn finial's and adjustable serpentine topped mirror, beautiful painted throughout with floral swags and garlands, the central top with portrait miniature design cartouche detailed with acanthus scrolls and tied ribbon adornment, 76x51x23cm.
TOPICAL TIMES 1930s Excellent condition Topical Times Album with Miniature Panel Portraits of Football Stars circa 1937. 3 of the 24 portrait cards are missing but the other 21 and the album itself are in excellent condition. Also included in the Lot are 15 large Topical Times colour portrait cards and two black and white plus six Topical Times Sporting Annuals 1933-34 to 1938-39 inclusive. The six annuals are mostly in generally good condition although 34-35 has a small piece missing off the cover. Two other Topical Times items are included, "1500 Football Stars and all about them" (36 pages in good condition) and "Sporting Teasers Asked and Answered" (40 pages in generally good condition). These were both giveaways with Topical Times. Generally good
*Album. 'Scraps of Friendship' by Elizabeth Ambrose of Hagloe House, Gloucestershire, circa 1825-42, containing approximately 36 original watercolours, 18 original pencil drawings, and 90 various engravings, all mounted on 70 album leaves of differing colours, many with contemporary pencil inscriptions or captions, some signed, contemporary gilt-decorated plum full morocco, rubbed and some wear, with covers detached and backstrip deficient, 4to (30 x 24 cm, 11.75 x 9.5 ins) Attractive album compiled by Elizabeth Ambrose, presumed daughter of William Ambrose (died 1843), who married Elizabeth Thomas (died 1838) in 1810. Hagloe House is located near Blakeney in Gloucestershire in the Forest of Dean, overlooking the River Severn. Watercolours in the album include: a portrait of Miss Ambrose, another of Amy Roberts, a tulip by James Jones, an urn of flowers by A.H., dated February 1832, with 8 lines of handwritten verse, a pink rose with verse by A. Harrison, another of snowdrops, a fruit still life, several other watercolours of flowers and botanical subjects, a watercolour with pencil of a young couple gathering fruit by W. Hardwick, dated 1827, an unsigned view of the Lake District, an unsigned watercolour of a peacock, a watercolour of a girl on a stile, by E.L., dated 1828, two coastal scenes by Captain McArthur [possibly John McArthur, 1791-1862, a sketcher and naval officer who commanded the naval garrison at Port Essington (Northern Territory), Australia, from 1838, and returned to England in 1850], attractive watercolour of the Hagloe Crab (a cider apple regarded in the 18th century as second only to the stire), and a watercolour of smugglers in a cave. Drawings include: Silhouette profiles of the Ladies of Llangollen by A.H., a view of Abe Bridge, by Jno. Coleman, a pencil view of Valle Crucis, a fine miniature calligraphic design of the Lord's Prayer and Apostle's Creed, a moonlight scene of boats and windmill, a study of eggs, another of a yacht, a view of Hagloe, by A.E.E., dated August 10th, 1842, and two further pencil views of an island castle and moor on horseback, a view of Kirkstall Abbey, a landscape sketch by William Varley (1785-1858), dated 1825, presented to Miss Roberts with the artist's respects, June 8, 1825, three small views, probably of Hagloe, and a pencil study entitled The Cousins (on Turnbull's Super Fine London Board). Prints include: a colour lithograph title (published by G. Tregear), a lithographic view of Goodrich Court, published by G. Rowe, Cheltenham, lithographic view of Henbury Church, another of Cardiff Castle, four lithographic views of the River Avon, nine small lithographic views of Blaise Hamlet, a coloured engraving of Spanish peasant boys by J. Rogers after Murillo, published by J. McCormick, and another similar portrait of Napoleon by W. Nicholas after David, two colour lithographs of Indian birds, several Baxter prints, two colour lithographs of game birds, four colour lithographs of deer, etc. (1)
Duke of Windsor An interesting archive of letters, photographs, sketches, medals, cigarette case etc. belonging to Harold Holder (1911-81), bodyguard to the Duke of Windsor, including; Royal Duties - commences with a letter describing his appointment to protection work while in Special Branch, and the need to fly at short notice to join the Duke in Lisbon for travel to the Bahamas where the Duke was to be Governor. A press cutting describes the urgency caused by German attempts to prevent the ex-king leaving Europe, Photographs commencing upon arrival in Nassau (1940), recording the Duke and Duchess in the Bahamas and on visits to the USA and Canada, One portrait is signed by both, others depict visits to a war factory in Detroit, and to New York's Chase National Bank, City Hall, Park Avenue, etc. (1941). Other visits include Miami, Washington and Palm Beach as well as to a ranch in ?Alberta, Canada. A white metal cigarette case with the Duke's armorial contains a presentation inscription to Sgt. Holder (1940). Numerous stamps and visas in his passport record his travels with the Royals and a travelling expenses sheet signed by the Duke is present.. Harry Holder then joined the RAF and trained as a Navigator with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1944, his log book records his training and subsequent operations in Malaya, Singapore, Cocos and India (1945-6), there are also photographs of his Hawker Tempest, which he crash landed. An interesting typed letter signed by the Duke of Windsor in April 1948 discusses Harry's plans to relocate to the USA and the difficulties of finding work as 'a foreigner' but offers to contact 'my old friend Mr Edgar Hoover' on his behalf. From 1951 to 1958, Harry served with the Special Branch of the Malayan Police (Asst. Superintendent) during the uprising against British Colonial Rule. Included is a Pewter salver recording his service. From 1958-64, he served in Nigeria, during independence. A collection of military badges and medals includes four Defence Medals, four War Medals (1939-45), two 1939-45 Stars, the France and Germany Star, The Burma Star, two General Service Medals with Malaya Clasps, a strip of miniature medals replicating most of the above, a Nigeria Independence Medal 1960 and a quantity of Red Cross Society medals. Another talent of Harry Holder is shown in a collection of colourful original artwork, including childrens illustrations with verse, cartoons, pencil sketches, etc, many signed and dated in the 1940's. Also included are family photographs, postcards (one signed by the Duke and Duchess), letters and cards, ephemera, etc. Personal inspection recommended (qty)

Mather Brown (American, 1761-1831) Portrait of Sir Edward Astley, 4th Bt. (1729-1802) of Melton Constable Hall, Norfolk oil on canvas, unlined, oval 73 x 60cm (28 x 23in) Provenance: Westacre High House, Norfolk, and by descent to the present owner Literature: Sir Frederick Duleep Singh, Portraits in Norfolk Houses, Norwich: Jarrold and Sons, 1928, Volume 2, p.372; Dorinda Evans, Mather Brown (1761-1831) - An Early American Artist in England, Middletown, Conn. Wesleyan University Press, 1982, p.68 (in the Library at Westacre High House) Other Notes: Mather Brown was a portrait and historical painter, born in Boston, Massachusetts, but active mostly in England. Brown was the son of Gawen and Elizabeth (Byles) Brown, and descended from the Reverend Mr Increase Mather on his mother's side. He was taught by his aunt and around 1773 (age 12) became a pupil of Gilbert Stuart. He arrived in London in 1781 to further his training in Benjamin West's studio, entered the Royal Academy schools in 1782 with plans to be a miniature painter, and began to exhibit a year later. The present portrait was painted in 1790 when Sir Edward Astley was 61 years of age. Tax stamp on the back of the canvas. Canvas maker's stamp "J Poole, High Holborn, British Linen. 1508-23-85". Cleaned in June 1958. Cleaner reported: "Unlined canvas, two small patches on back of canvas". Chips to the frame. Two old repaired tears. Oil on canvas which is unlined. There is an artist's suppliers stamp for J Poole on the reverse and a tax stamp. The canvas has two patch repairs on the reverse. The painting is attached to a rectangular wooden stretcher, some keys are missing and canvas tension is slightly slack. Apart from the small tears in the canvas, the paint layer is in a good condition. There are small areas of retouching covering the areas of damage. The varnish is dull and yellowed, but even. There is a layer of surface dirt present. The frame is missing a section of the moulding along the upper edge. There are a few scattered losses to the gilding.

*Lock Family Diaries. A group of manuscript diaries and related notebooks compiled by Mrs Caroline Louisa Lock, circa 1860s, the wife of Colonel Edward Seppings Lock, 82nd Foot, contained in a fine Coromandel box with gilt metal straps and key plate stamped 'G. Betjemann & Sons', the hinge engraved 'Charles Nephew & Co, Calcutta', inset with three Wedgwood jasperware porcelain plaques and lock stamped 'S. Morden & Co' (with key), the box spring loaded to raise the contents once opened, 13cm high x 21cm wide x 8.5cm deep (5.25 x 8.25 x 3.5ins), enclosing five leather bound journals, each gilt-titled on the spine, Visits & Addresses (1867-1869), Memoranda (1869-1872), Cash Account (no entries), Daily Journal (1865-1867), Personal Expenses (1866-1869), mostly daily chitchat, reference to the family home Bury Knowle House, Headington, Oxfordshire and the Ballachay family, military life including reference to the Bengal Cavalry, etc, some spotting and wear including one board detached, together with a sixteenth plate ambrotype portrait photograph of Caroline Lock contemporarily inscribed on the rear with name and marital status, with two small locks of Caroline Lock's hair in envelopes dated 1860/1865 presented in a morocco leather case, plus another portrait miniature painted on ivory of Maria Ballachay n‚e Lock (Edward Seppings Lock's sister), 7 x 6cm (2.75 x 2.25ins), in a period gilt framed inscribed verso 'aunt Ballachay n‚e Lock Headington', framed size 17 x 15.5cm (7 x 6.25ins) Caroline Louisa Lock (n‚e Cardew) was the wife of Colonel Edward Seppings Lock who served during the Indian Mutiny with 82nd (Prince of Wale's Volunteers) Regiment of Foot and was present at the action of Khankur, defence of the Jail and subsequent operations in Shahjehanpore and the affairs of Shahabad, Mahomdee and Bunkagaon. They married on 5 October 1859 and Caroline was with Colonel Lock when he died aged 49 of enteric fever whilst commanding the regiment in Natal on 10 December 1886 having served 31 years with the Colours. 7th Queen’s Own Light Dragoons Miniature Portrait of an Officer Circa 1793 by Michael Bartlett (1922-2008) This is an outstanding quality miniature water colour on ivorne depicting an Officer of the Regiment, wearing dark blue short coatee with white facings. He holds his Tarleton helmet to his right hand and to his left his 1796 pattern sword. Signed “MB RMS 1998”. iFitted into a gilt glazed frame. Overall size 5 x 4 inches.
7th Dragoons Guards Miniature Portrait of a Trooper Circa 1846. By Michael Bartlett (1922-2008) A fine quality miniature water colour on ivorne depicting a Trooper of the Regiment, wearing scarlet shell jacket with Royal blue facings, to his head a “Pork Pie” style cap. Signed “MB RMS 2003”, Fitted into a gilt glazed frame. Overall size 5 x 4 inches.
