Backer (Dutch 1608-1651) Portrait miniature of a boy in a feathered cap Signed, dated and inscribed on the counter-enamel in red paint Inscribed on the reverse Prince of Orange./ Painted by Henry Pierce Bone/ after Frank Hals, May 1853 Enamel on copper, oval, in a giltwood frame with scroll and foliate decoration 105 x 75mm Although the inscription on the reverse identifies the sitter as William II, Prince of Orange (1626-1650), the painting is based on a work of an unknown boy by Jacob Adriaensz. Backer, today in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, (inv. no. 2483).

Henry Pierce Bone painted another version of this work for Queen Victoria in 1843 (Royal Collection no. RCIN 421709).
