He was Page of Honour to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII. A photograph of the sitter, dated 1887, wearing the very same costume depicted in the present portrait exists in the Royal Collection (RCIN 2907383) having been acquired by Queen Victoria. Ivan Hay would later fight in the First World War and attained the rank of Captain in the Reserve 5th Lancers. In 1921 he married Pamela Burroughes, daughter of Francis George Burroughes of Blakeney, Norfolk. He was made an MBE in 1932.

In 1801 he entered the Ecole de L'Academie of Paris as "native of Naples, 21-years-old" living in rue de Savoye No. 10. After military service which probably included the Italian campaigns, in 1814, the Journal de Paris records that "M.(onsieur) Parent, peintre en miniature, rue Neuve Saint-Augustin, No. 35" offers himself as a portrait miniaturist. In 1815 Parent seems to have executed a large number of miniature portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte in response to public demand. Some of these works were copies after J.-B. Isabey and J.-B. J. Augustin.
