A Superb 19th Century French Carved Ivory Powder Box With Portrait Miniature To Lid Signed Claveau Wonderful circular box with intricately carved floral and foliate swag detail terminating at empty cartouche to sides, and carved, beaded border to lid. Glazed portrait miniature to lid depicting a finely attired noblewoman in powdered wig, feathered hat and lace mantle typical of ladies high fashion circa 1780. Portrait signed to bottom left 'Claveau' - believed to be Eugène Pierre Claveau (1820 - 1902) diameter 5.5 inches. Please see accompanying image

Set with large oval polychrome portrait miniature depicting a female in the fashionable dress of the 1780's with powdered wig, silk gown and candy stripe bow to her décolleté. Before her marriage, she was commonly known as Kitty Pakenham. Under glass with a little rubbing along the lower edge. Little paint loss and scuffing along the edges. Slightly loose in its frame.
