Early 20th century AD. A large and sturdy British naval spotting telescope by Ross of London, serial no. 46706, calibrated 7-14-21 on power ring with steel barrel and brass fittings (traces of original naval blue-gray paint), in original wooden case with lock (no key); with a later military wood, brass and aluminium tripod. 9.2 kg total, telescope 70cm, tripod 105cm (27 1/2 and 41 1/2"). Property of an Essex gentleman; by inheritance. Tripod-mounted spotting telescopes were used in calling the fall of shot for naval bombardments ashore and for reading signals; this example is probably of the First World War period, or a little earlier. Good original condition; rubber eyepiece perished.
An undated archaistic pre-columbian style tripod bowl; three legs with dappled pattern terminating in a clawed foot; bowl with a wide, flat rim and shallow bowl, decorated in various geometric and swirling patterns of red, white and black. 3.4kg, 35cm (14").
