In the archives of the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge, there is a letter (draft) to John Wrottesley (2nd baron), 6th June 1857 from Lady Jane Franklin to present Leopold McClintock at Levee (MS 248/226; D FRANKLIN JANE). Sir John Franklin set sail for the North West Passage on 19th May 1845 in two ships, HMS Erberus and HMS Terror, with 134 officers and men and with three years provisions. After entering Lancaster Sound, the eastern gateway to the North West Passage, both ships disappeared. After the failure of government sponsored search expeditions, the Admiralty withdrew financial support and Franklin’s widow, Lady Jane Franklin, organised a search expedition for her husband’s remains under Captain Francis Leopold McClintock in the 185 ton steam yacht Fox, which she purchased for £2000. On 18th June, Captain McClintock was presented to the Queen by Lord Wrottseley, President of the Royal Society at Levee. The Fox expedition succeeded in finding a number of relics and the only surviving document that told of Franklin’s death on 11th June 1847.
