First World War Trench Art interest - Royal Regiment of Artillery Vickers Machine Gun, of massive proportions, 21½in. (52.2cm.) long, the machine gun has great detail and many moving parts, moving cocking lever, detailed workable trigger with safety device, numbered rear sight can be set, raised or lowered, removable brass bung to front water inlet, the rear handles / trigger-grips fashioned from bullets with screw tops, one side unscrewing to reveal an oil brush, the other a void to hold oil, fold away fully functional tripod legs etc, sitting on a polished wooden base with brass trim, the cradle having applied badges and inscriptions to either side, the first centred by an oval plaque with large Royal Artillery insignia flanked with inscription '1914-1917 ENGLAND N. IRELAND FRANCE BELGIUM ', the other side centred by Royal Artillery badge, flanked by initials ' J.M.D & R.P.K ' probably the makers of the piece, under the inscription reads ' TO THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE ROYAL REGIMENT OF ARTILLERY AND THE DOCTORS AND NURSES OF THE MILITARY CONVALESCENT HOSPITALS " COMRADES ALL " and below ' CALAIS M.F.HOSPITAL FRANCE. ALNWICK M.C.H. ENGLAND. WHITEHEAD C.H. & U.V.F.HOSPITAL . BELFAST. N. IRELAND., overall length 22 5/8in. (57.5cm.). * Originally from a world-renowned collection. ** Model believed to have been made by recovering wounded soldiers at various hospitals mentioned, They would have served in France and Belgium, been treated in France and transferred nearer home to fully convalesce. The locations indicate at least two men, one each from England and Northern Ireland, the latter taking the piece, the model was purchased in Belfast in 1957 by the original collector. * Condition: Very good, nothing to note.
