Important Royal Naval Air Service, Armoured Cars, Photograph Albums, 1915-1918 & Post War, Gilbert G. Speight with Significant Gallipoli Interest. Outstanding Photograph Album titled and neatly captioned covering Sub Lieut. Gilbert George Speight's service first with the RNAS, Armoured Car unit. The Album illustrates his voyage via Malta to Gallipoli in 1915 and includes a large number of excellent images on the Peninsular, these include RNAS about to land, V Beach, Dug outs, Gun Crew, Indian Mule Transport, "My Dugout" marked with pencil cross, Landing at X Beach, Inside Dugout, Damaged Krupp Guns Cape Helles, RNAS Armoured Car in its Dugout, Leaving Gallipoli etc. Further images were taken on Lemnos and later at Alexandria. He obviously spends time at 19th General Hospital (Orwa-El-Wasra) and he has taken an excellent picture from a window showing Ambulances arriving. Now recovered there are some interesting images of his Armoured Car unit, together with photographs of trophies including "Turkish MG Tripod captured by RNAS". A later section illustrates the Armoured Cars Unit in action at Mersa Matrooh, including trenches, prisoners and "Burial of Col. Snow and 16 British Killed Jan. 1916". A particularly good sequence illustrates a "Desert Patrol" with Armoured Cars etc. (some 320 well captioned and generally very clear photographs in this Album alone) A second Photograph Album shows service back in the UK in Flight gear and with excellent images in the air etc. In addition two very unusual related documents "Certificate for Wounds and Hurts" describe narrow escapes he had while flying as an Observer from RNAS Newlyn in 1917 & 1918 in a seaplane. These detail the serious crashes and his injuries and are signed by the Pilot and Medical Officer. Both indicate that thankfully he was sober at the time of the crash! A further Post war Album traces his family and marriage and other documents and maps add up to a fascinating Collection. In summary three Albums, maps and ephemera.
