A MASSIVE SILVER-INLAID BRONZE CENSER, SHISOU MARKChina, 17th-18th century. The heavily cast bombe body supported on a spreading foot and rising to a slightly everted rim, the shoulder set with two loop handles, the exterior finely inlaid in silver wire with sinuously coiled dragons dividing capitals in the form of lotus flowers reminiscent of the Old Summer Palace (yuanmingyuan). The base with a silver-inlaid two-character Shisou mark.Provenance: The Mee-Din and Robert W. Moore Collection. Robert W. Moore is a famed California collector of Chinese and Korean art, whose passion began in the 1950s when he served in the US Army and was stationed in Korea. After his return to the United States, he began collecting Korean and later also Chinese works of art, and over the following decades became a very knowledgeable, discerning, and influential collector.Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear and casting irregularities, minuscule nicks, light scratches, the interior with extensive traces of use. Magnificent, natural patina overall.Weight: 2,903 g Dimensions: Width 26.7 cm (across handles)Little is known about the historic figure Shisou. The earliest reference in the Zhongguo meishujia renming cidian ('Dictionary of Chinese Artists') comes from the Luochuang xiaodu and is presumably from the same source as published in Zhongguo yishujia zhenglue ('Brief Introduction of Chinese Artists). Shisou is listed there only as a late Ming dynasty monk without any further biographical information. A number of vessels and sculptures from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century bear his name, sometimes in combination with a hall name, Jinyu tang ('Hall of Prosperity').Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's Hong Kong, 6 October 2015, lot 171Price: HKD 62,500 or approx. A BRONZE CENSER, GUI, WITH A WOOD COVER AND A JADE FINIAL, YUAN TO MING DYNASTYOpinion: While at first glance the form and archaistic decoration on the present censer indicates that it was made in the 17th or 18th century, the remarkably massive casting and especially the imposing loop handles with their distinct dragon heads and upturned snouts, a rare detail not found in later Ming and Qing censers, suggest a much earlier date. Also, it must nowadays be considered a small miracle to find such a nice incense burner that still retains an 'original' jade finial from the Yuan dynasty! China, 14th-16th century. Of slightly flattened form, the archaistic incense burner decorated on each side with a central band showing a taotie mask and mythical beasts in relief against a key-fret ground, the design repeated on the band at the foot, flanked by two dragon heads with distinct upturned snouts issuing loop handles. The domed hardwood cover pierced with four shaped reserves enclosing stylized flowers, finely carved and with a naturally grown patina, dating from the Qing dynasty. The jade finial dates from the Yuan dynasty and is neatly carved and incised with an egret under a lotus leaf, finely executed in openwork, the stone of a pale celadon tone with russet inclusions and a fine polish overall.Provenance: From a private collection in New England, USA. Condition: The censer with an even and dark natural patina, minor old wear and some casting flaws, few minuscule drilled holes, minor nicks and shallow surface scratches, a small loss with associated old fill and touchups to one handle. The cover with age cracks, few nicks and scratches. The jade finial with minor nicks and losses here and there, some soiling, as well as natural inclusions and fissures which over the centuries have developed into microscopic hairline cracks.Weight: 3,022 gDimensions: Length 28.5 cm, Height 22.1 cm (incl. cover and finial)Literature comparison: For a related bronze censer with jade finial and wood cover see Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, vol. 80, 2015-16, fig. 5b.Auction result comparison:Type: Remotely related Auction: Sotheby's New York, 24 March 2018, lot 1783 Price: USD 7,500 or approx. AN ARCHAIC BRONZE RITUAL FOOD VESSEL, DING, EARLY WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTYChina, 11th-10th century BC. The deep, rounded body is massively cast and raised on three columnar supports, the exterior with a flat-cast band of three taotie masks in relief below the rim from which two sturdy U-shaped loop handles rise. The interior with a crisp two character pictogram in oracle bone script below the rim.Inscriptions: To interior below the rim, 'hao' (good).Provenance: Nellie Clay Foster, acquired in China during the 1930s, and thence by descent in the family. Nellie 'Nelchen' K. A. Foster (nee Armstrong, d. 1950) was a socialite and amateur poet in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. She married the noted naturalist and yachtsman Henry Clay Foster (d. 1950). Nellie and Henry both traveled across Asia in the 1930s. According to information provided by the family, they got acquainted with a curator or consultant of the Metropolitan Museum in New York during one of their journeys through China. On one occasion this curator - possibly Gijs Bosch-Reitz (1860-1938) - had discovered five ancient bronzes for sale, of which he could only afford the purchase of three. As the story goes, the owner insisted on selling all five bronzes at once, and so Nellie was invited to pick two pieces. Her first choice was the present ding vessel, which she kept in her New Jersey home until her death.Condition: Excellent condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, minor losses, nicks and cracks, all pretty much as expected from ancient bronzes. Beautiful, naturally grown patina with extensive malachite encrustation. X-Ray and CT: The images clearly document the outstanding overall condition of this lot. The crisply cast relief is remarkably well-preserved (see x-ray image 4). Note the three distinct areas of minor erosion at the inside bottom of the vessel (CT image 25). Further note the characteristic remnants of soil inside the legs (CT images 21 and 22).Weight: 3,022 gDimensions: Diameter 20 cm, height 23.6 cmLiterature comparison: Compare a closely related bronze ding decorated with a similar taotie band, dated to the Western Zhou dynasty, 11th century BC, 23.1 cm wide, in the collection of the Arthur M.
