A Chinese export black and gold lacquer sewing box of canted rectangular cushion form, extensively decorated with pagodas, figures, trees, etc., brass side carrying handles, the interior with lidded compartmentalised tray with a full complement of Chinese carved ivory fittings, comprising; pair of clamps, two cylindrical pots, four cotton barrels, thimble, stiletto and multiple reel, the front fitted with a writing drawer, lacking feet, 36cm x 27.5cm x 14.5cm. * With handwritten ink note and associated material suggesting the box reached England about 1833 and possibly belonged to Emily Ouseley (1839-1912), born India.
