An Indian Thewa gold, glass and silver gilt oval Snuff Box, Pratapgargh, Rajasthan, The hinged cover decorated with hunters on elephant-back engaged with a ferocious tiger, in a forest with palms, flowering lotus and fleeing antelope on a green ground, sides embossed with beaded and foliate borders, 2 ½ in wide.Footnote: Old Pratapgarh town, now a district of Udaipur, was home to this particular artisanal jewellery craft of applying gold to foiled back enamel known a Thewa-work. Items for the European market, like snuff boxes, bracelets, caskets etc were popular souvenirs in the 19th century. Cf.
