THE LOT INCLUDES THE MEDALS AND THEIR MINIATURES, GOLD & RUBY CATERPILLAR, PAIR OF GOLD CUFFLINKS, LONGINES WRIST WATCH, CIGARETTE BOX & 2 CIGARETTE CASES, BOOK WRITTEN BY ALF MARTIN, DVD OF AN INTERVIEW BY BBC NEWSLINE WITH ALF MARTIN AND OTHER ASSOCIATED EPHEMERA. ALFIED MARTIN WAS BORN AT FINAGHY, BELFAST IN 1920. IN 1938, LIKE MANY YOUNG MEN AT THAT TIME, HE WAS HIT BY A FEELING OF PATRIOTISM. FORBIDDEN BY HIS MOTHER FROM JOINING THE ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE - IT WAS TOO DANGEROUS! - IN JANUARY 1939 HE INSTEAD JOINED THE ANTRIM FORTRESS COMPANY, RPYAL ENGINEERS. THIS WAS A TERRITORIAL ARMY COMPANY TRAINING ONE EVENING A WEEK IN CENTRAL BELFAST. CALLED UP IN AUGUST 1939 HE SERVED WITH THE ENGINEERS AT KILROOT, HELENS BAY AND MAGILLIGAN BEFORE JOINING THE ROYAL AIR FORCE IN MAY 1941. IT WAS WHILE SERVING WITH NO 102 SQUADRON RAF, AT POCKLINGTON, YORKSHIRE, AS AN OBSERVER ON HALIFAX BOMBER HR663, THAT HIS AIRCRAFT WAS SHOT DOWN OVER THE FRENCH-BELGIAN BORDER. THE BOOK WITH THIS LOT TELLS OF HIS REMARKABLE TALE OF ESCAPE FROM GERMAN-OCCUPIED FRANCE AND THOSE WHO HELPED HIM.
14K GOLD MASONIC JEWEL -THE BASIS OF THE JEWEL IS A TEUTONIC CROSS. ON THAT IS A NINE-POINTED STAR, COMPOSED OF THREE GOLD TRIANGLES INTERLACED. THE DESIGN ALSO FORMS NINE SMALL TRIANGLES AND IN EACH OF THESE IS ONE OF THE LETTERS... 'S.A.P.I.E.N.T.I.A' THE LATIN WORD FOR WISDOM. A SWORD EXTENDS FROM THE LOWER PART OF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE JEWEL TO THE UPPER PART OF THE RIGHT SIDE. CROSSING THAT IS A 'HAND OF JUSTICE'. THIS FORMS A SCEPTER TERMINATING IN A HAND. ON TOP OF THE CROSS, TRIANGLES, CROSSED SWORD AND HAND OF JUSTICE IS A CIRCULAR PLATE AND ON THE PLATE IS A SHIELD WITH A CROWNED DOUBLE-HEADED EAGLE. TO THE RIGHT OF THE EAGLE IS A BALANCE AND TO THE LEFT IS A SQUARE & COMPASSES. AROUND THE DESIGN ARE THE LATIN WORDS ORDO AB CHAO, OUT OF CHAOS, ENCLOSED BY TWO SERPENTS EACH BITING ITS TAIL.

A fine exhibition quality 5 inch gauge model of a London Midland and Scottish 4-6-2 Duchess of Atholl tender locomotive, recently completed by gold medal winning, model engineer John Richardson of Halifax. The locomotive was built using works drawings and is finished in the 1938 LMS livery of crimson lake with black, vermillion and gold lining. Important Notice: Sadly, the tender to this locomotive was scratched while in storage at Dreweatts. However, the builder of the locomotive, has kindly offered to oversee the repair of the tender to faultless new condition by the original professional painter of the locomotive at no extra cost to the buyer, within six weeks of the auction date. The cab interior painted in black and white, woodwork having grained finish.The chassis with four cylinders, hollow axles and working leaf springs throughout, running boards with lubricators and fine detail pipework, double brake blocks. Two injectors and detailed nonworking exhaust injector and pipework.The 4000 gallon tender with hand pump and lift up water valves. Coal pusher, water scoop and coal spray bars, removable front bulkhead and plates. Chassis with working leaf springs, brakes and detailed buffer beam.The unfinished model locomotive was trial run and subsequently totally stripped and the remaining details completed followed by painting. The engine has not been run since painting.Duchess of Atholl was one of a batch of five conventional Pacifics built in 1938 following the first ten Coronation Class locomotives which were all streamlined.The class eventually numbered 38 and were regarded by many as the pinnacle of express British steam locomotives.Boiler History: Western Steam boiler documentation. A fine exhibition quality 5 inch gauge model of a London North Eastern Railway A4 Pacific Class 4-6-2 live steam tender locomotive ‘Mallard’ No. 4468, The model built by Mr John Richardson of Halifax, circa 1991, from Doncaster works drawings, photographs and dimensions and details taken from Mallard and the other preserved A4’s. Built as in 1938. The silver soldered copper boiler would appear to have never been steamed and the cab is of fine scale detailing which includes steam pressure gauge, sight-glass, regulator, direction control, lever operated firebox doors, driver's seats and simulated wooden plank flooring. The chassis with twin outside cylinders and centre cylinder having Walschaert’s valve gear with fluted motion. The eight wheel tender, of streamlined type, with L.N.E.R to side, fitted hand rails, steps, coupling and vacuum hose.The model finished in traditional garter blue and black livery with name plates and cab-side number, detailed river-work, steps, hand-rails, lamp irons and lamps.The model comes together with display track and wooden stand.Mallard was purchased by Lord Braybrooke directly from the builder Mr John Richardson of Halifax in May 1991. The model won gold at The Model Engineer exhibition Alexandra Palace, London in 1990 and also took The Crebbin Memorial Trophy.Mallard was built at Doncaster in 1938 and later that year established the world speed record for steam traction at 126 miles per hour. The A4 locomotive was designed under the direction of Sir Nigel Gresley of the London and North Eastern Railway from developments of the Pacific class in 1922. A MLEC gold medal winning model of a 5 inch gauge Britannia class 4-6-2 tender locomotive ‘Hereward the Wake’ No 70037, built by the award-winning builder the late Mr Bill Connor of Maidstone. The copper super-heated boiler with fittings including pressure gauge, twin water sight glasses, regulator, wheel direction control, lever operated fire doors, planked cab flooring, cab controlled drain cocks and injectors. The chassis with twin outside cylinders having Walschaert’s valve gear, fluted motion and axle driven water pump. The six wheel tender fitted with hand operated feed pump, detailed rivet-work and fitted ladder to rear. The model finished in British Railway's green lined livery with fitted smoke deflectors, steps and hand rails.Length 192cm. Cab width 25cm.The model is being sold together with its MLEC gold medal.Boiler History: Boiler test certificate No C179213 issued by Tonbridge MES.
