Sicily, Akragas, tetradrachm, c. 409-406 BC, ????G-?????-?[?] inscribed on a tablet hanging on a nail (but with the last two letters of the legend in the field) above Nike driving fast quadriga left; in ex., long thin club, rev., two eagles standing right on dead hare lying on rocks, the closer eagle with closed wings and its head thrown back and the further with open wings, its head bent down to tear at the prey; in left field, head of bull (partly off flan), 17.19g, die axis 1.00, very fine and very rareReferences: C. Note: This is part of the exceptionally fine coinage of Akragas comprising decadrachms, tetradrachms and gold pieces (see following lot) issued shortly before the city’s destruction by the Carthaginians in 406 BC. Although unsigned, Seltman attributed the obverse of this coin to Kimon of Syracuse and the reverse to Polykrates, whose name appears on another tetradrachm die in the series and who is assumed to have been responsible for the production of the famous decadrachms.
