Lot 1946

An Ernest Borel gold rectangular cased lady's wrist watch, with a signed jewelled movement, detailed within the signed cased back 18K 0750 (the dial cover lacking), fitted to a black leather strap with a gilt metal buckle, a gilt metal mounted cornelian fob seal, a turquoise bar brooch and a gilt metal mounted banded agate oval bar brooch with a box, (4).

Condition Report Gold work in good condition, approx circa 1740. closes well.

Condition Report There are a few dents/casting flaws and scuff marks to the front of the bangle, which is largely a quality issue. Design of clasp is not particularly safe, there are a few dents to the edge of the back of the bangle. Internal dimensions 5.4cm x 5.7cm.

Condition Report There are a few very minor surface nicks to the edge, one or two scratches including one to the table facet of the amethyst. This table facet scratch is visible to the naked eye, claws starting to show signs of wear, shank in good condition. Amethyst is of medium colour saturation.

A Victorian novelty propelling pencil formed in the style of Cleopatra's needle, length 5cm, a pair of Georgian spectacles and a broken silver spectacle, a pair of gold plated lorgnettes, a 19th century portrait miniature framed back to back of two young girls, a combination propelling pencil, quill pen and knife, three further pocket knives, a brass cased compass, a silver implement and a box, (12). Condition Report The pencil is not hallmarked. There are some dents to the body and a patch of lead solder where the suspension loop has been attached. The pull-out mechanism operates smoothly, there is no lead inside the pencil to test out the propelling mechanism. Diameter of the tip is 1mm.

A Superb pair of early 19thC Italian Polychrome Weighted mahogany bookends bearing The Family Crest and Arms of The Medici Family ( showing the 6 Palle ). The bookends are weighted with lead shot , heard ?running? when moved. Measuring 7 1/4 x 6 3/4 x 2 3/16? (18.4 x 17.1 x 5.5 cm) The six balls or palle of the Medici stemma or coat of arms were so ubiquitous in 16th and 17th century Tuscany, and that their rallying cry in times of war is said to have been 'Palle! Palle!'. The origin of the palle is obscure. Originally, the coat of arms was five red balls and one blue, on a gold shield. ( Much as we have here though with wear commensurate with age) The House of Medici was an Italian political Dynasty and Banking family which came to prominence in Florence during the first half of the 15 th C. Four Roman Catholic Popes were Medici : Leo X (1513-1521), Clement VII (1523-1534), Pius IV ( 1559-1565) and Leo XI (1605) plus two Queens of France : Catherine ( 1547-1589) and Marie ( 1600-1630)
