A UK-delivered Clio Williams 1, one of only 390 and restored to a fanatical level. It’s the early 1990s, and the 1.8-litre Clio 16v is locked in combat for hot-hatch glory with the ageing Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9. It’s a better car by many objective criteria, but not a convincingly faster one and, in the eyes of many, the GTI still holds the crown. It took a truly special car to convincingly wrestle supremacy away from Peugeot, to really bury the old-timer and to refine the class in the process. That car was the Clio Williams.Sold with the compelling marketing strategy of an F1 team association, the Williams was actually an homologation special in the familiar mould. It was built because RenaultSport wanted to go rallying and the class maximum displacement stood at 2.0-litres. Given this was still the era of homologation into classes A and N, Renault simply had to build 2,500 road cars to qualify although it would eventually build many more. The initial production run of the Clio Williams was limited to just 5,400 examples, of which only 390 came to the UK.Naturally, RenaultSport did a thorough job. The suspension used a reinforced front subframe borrowed from the Clio Cup racer, plus uprated springs, dampers, rear torsion arms and thicker anti-roll bars. The track was increased by 34mm and the 7J Speedline alloys were half an inch wider than the 16v’s and distinctively gold. The gearbox was stronger, too, with revised ratios. There was just one exterior colour offered for the first generation of Williams – ‘449’ Metallic Sports Blue – and the cumulative effect of body (already blistered of arch, front, and rear, and bulging of bonnet from the 16v), paint and those golden wheels was as close to hot-hatch perfection as many felt it was possible to get. It's a small car, with a wheel pushed to the very extremity of each corner; a little shorter, slightly wider, and significantly lower than a Clio 172 or 182.Codenamed ‘F7R’ and developed from the 16v’s 137bhp F7P unit, the new engine featured a longer stroke and bigger bore size, and benefited from a stronger crankshaft (borrowed from the diesel Clio) plus new pistons, camshafts and conrods, with bigger valves and a lightweight exhaust manifold. Output was now 148bhp at 6,100rpm and 126lb/ft at 4,500rpm, not enormous by today's standards but 85% of the torque was available from 2,500rpm and the car only weighed 981kg. The car presented here is a 1993 Renault Clio Williams (Phase 1), #0179, and was originally supplied though Renault Manchester on the 31st December 1993, initially wearing the private registration ‘5174 MP’ and then, in 1997, this was removed and DVLA issued the current registration of ‘L299 LCK’.The car is accompanied by a comprehensive service history from new, with 15 stamps in its original service book, a history file with numerous receipts for parts and service work over the years, along with 15 MOT certificates. Back in 2010, ‘L299 LCK’ was taken off the road with a comprehensive restoration planned and was well stored in a dry garage until 2018 when our vendor became its owner and embarked on the most complete and detail-laden restoration imaginable. In our vendor's words, “The stunning car you see before you is the result of many years of work carried out by a retired car restorer who rebuilt this car purely for pleasure and without any budget or time restrictions. The body itself was in very good order having spent many years in dry storage, many new old stock parts were used where available, these include a genuine Renault windscreen, exhaust, dampers, and many more; the engine has been fully rebuilt and balanced, a genuine water pump and cambelt kit fitted, whilst the gearbox has been refurbished with new bearings and seals. All the suspension components and dampers are new, along with new brake components and refurbished genuine Renault brake callipers. As you would expect, the paintwork is totally flawless along with the plastic trims and mouldings, the glass is all genuine and still wears the cars original matching security numbers. The car’s specification is very original with only a couple of modern-day upgrades, the engine mounts are modern Vibra-Technics units, and a soft clutch conversion has been completed making the clutch pedal much more useable on a daily basis.”This is an opportunity to acquire one of the most desirable homologation road cars of the last 30 years. Whilst in ‘better than new’ condition and preserved for years to come, this sparkling little Clio remains eminently useable and may turn out to be a rather shrewd purchase.SpecificationMake: RENAULTModel: CLIO WILLIAMS PHASE 1Year: 1993Chassis Number: VF1C57M0510844746Registration Number: L299 LCKTransmission: ManualEngine Number: C005159 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 101600 MilesMake: RHDClick here for more details and images

Lot 415

A superbly engineered machine, UK-delivered, just 39,000 miles and hugely capable. The letters ‘STI’ hold a special sort of appeal for many Subaru Impreza enthusiasts. Think of ‘Subaru Technica International’ as the go-faster wing of Subaru much as M is to BMW, AMG is to Mercedes or, more accurately, Ralliart is to Mitsubishi. STI-badged Imprezas command serious respect and the officially imported UK cars are always in big demand. It's fair to say that October 2000 was a significant month for Impreza owners. Out went the much-loved original shape car and in came the revised bug-eyed edition. The reception was frosty to say the least, as Subaru realised that the styling wasn't to the taste of hardcore fans and moved quickly with the launch of the Impreza UK300 which offered compound headlamps, bigger spoilers, and the option of a Prodrive WR kit that boosted power to 245bhp. The UK300 was an instant hit and Subaru UK subsequently introduced the Impreza STi at the 2001 Frankfurt show. Debuting in British showrooms in January 2002, the STI, a car that was launched with 261bhp and the option of a standard car or one with bigger Prodrive-designed spoilers, grille, and front bumper. Both were badged 'Type-UK' to differentiate them from parallel imported models. The 2002 Paris Motor Show saw the release of the facelifted Impreza with much of the credit going to Prodrive and the designer of the McLaren F1, Peter Stevens. With revised front wings, shapelier headlights, a more aggressive bumper and front grille, a re-sculpted bonnet and revised rear light clusters, it was a far more cohesive design than its predecessor and sales soon picked up again, especially as its key rival, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII, had just been toned down from its Evo VI heyday. Almost immediately Prodrive announced a performance pack for the STI offering a full 300bhp. A 2003 facelift saw the controversial bug-eye headlamps replaced and a raft of other changes brought in.Introduced at the 2001 Frankfurt Show, the STI is powered by a 265bhp 2.0-litre flat four engine, but don't be fooled into thinking that it's merely a case of plugging in a more aggressive engine management chip or a bucket-sized turbocharger. The later 2003 facelifted car followed the same theme with revised suspension and a few engine tweaks. Nearly 80% of the STI's all-alloy powerplant is unique. The piston head was reshaped to form tougher semi-closed-deck cylinder blocks. Screw-in conrods and forged pistons combine with shimless valve lifters, sodium-filled exhaust valves and hollow valve intakes. Every moving part is either stronger, lighter or both. This reduces inertia and gives the engine a manic free-revving feel that's missing from the standard WRX. A larger intercooler and air intake help keep things from meltdown, and a water spray has been fitted to the intercooler that is operated by the driver via a dash-mounted button. Serious stuff.Differences to the regular WRX include special gold-coloured spoked alloy wheels, colour-keyed sill spoilers and an interior featuring blue suede-effect seats with STI logos and red stitching for the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake lever. Also, inside - and sure to please enthusiasts - is a switch to spray the intercooler with water. Another device allows the driver to pre-set a warning buzzer and light to guard against over-revving the engine. On opening the bonnet, the engine compartment greets owners with a dramatic mixture of colours and detailing. The intake manifold, for example, is painted in red and the enlarged aluminium intercooler emblazoned with STI lettering. In addition, the STI Prodrive Style features a massive high-riding boot spoiler, newly designed sill spoilers and a deeper, squarer front bumper. The grille and badging resemble the WRC rally car. Interior enhancements over the standard STI include dark blue-coloured instruments with red needles. Four colours were available: WR Blue Mica, Blue Black Mica, Premium Silver Metallic and Pure White, the latter two being available to special order only. The car presented here is a 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX-STI Type UK which has built on its very sound standard specification and been further enhanced for even more performance and fast driving acumen. The discerning older owner of this special car, a renowned figure in motoring circles, has improved this car with superb engineering carried out by proper specialists. Consequently, the bodywork is in as good condition as the mechanicals. It's accompanied by a large history file, fully detailing the specification, servicing and the recorded mileage of just 39,247. The car is ideal for fast-road driving, hill-climbs or sprint events. Its engineering has been overseen by an owner who has lived and breathed motorsport for decades, selecting the best people and parts to create this car. The car’s abilities are supreme, very useable on road, but comes into its own when sprinting or hill-climbing, a proper machine and offering staggering performance for this level of guide price. SpecificationMake: SUBARUModel: IMPREZA WRX-STI TYPE UKYear: 2003Chassis Number: JF1GDBKH33G035013Registration Number: AM53 HYATransmission: ManualEngine Number: 918121 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 39000 MilesClick here for more details and images

Lot 436

The pinnacle Impreza that ticks all the right boxes, this 36,000 mile JDM 22B is on offer from 18-years, long-term ownership with just one former keeper.Built to celebrate both the marque's 40th anniversary and its third straight WRC manufacturers' title, the 22B STi was billed as the production version of Subaru's already-iconic two-door World Rally Car. With its beefy front and rear arches increasing width by 80mm, a high-rise rear spoiler and the unique EJ22 engine, the 22B was as close to Colin McRae's rally car as any mortal was ever going to get. It wasn't so much a homologation special but more of a road-going replica.Often mistaken, the '22B' in the model's name is derived from the 555 WRC car sponsorship. Five hundred and fifty-five is 22B in hexadecimal, the number base used in computer programming. At the time, the IT world was booming and the Impreza was the icon car for the successful IT contractor in both the UK and Japan alike. ‘22B’ is often incorrectly referred to the engine capacity, which was increased from 1,994cc to 2,212cc. The 'B', meanwhile, supposedly stood for Bilstein, the damper supplier. Whichever way you look at it, Subaru created a truly fabulous machine.Only 399 22Bs were built for sale to the domestic market (another 25 were made for overseas markets) and they pre-sold almost instantly in early 1998, costing a shade under £40,000 in period. The engine wasn't simply a standard 2.0-litre bored out to 2.2-litre, the EJ22 was a separate casting. While they are exceptionally strong engines, people liked to push the boundaries a bit and often found out the hard way where the engines limit was, post-remapping. Subsequently getting hold of replacement engines was a nightmare as there were no more and many owners who blew them up resorted to putting in the later EJ25 2.5-litre engine that was originally developed to get more power for the heavily emission-controlled US cars. Even Nicky Grist couldn’t get a replacement when the engine in his second one (he had an 000 and an import) let go.The 22B is equipped with a specially-developed, 2.2-litre EJ22-engine with forged pistons, a seam-welded bodyshell (supposedly identical in shape to the WRC), special gearing, a twin-plate racing clutch, strengthened drive/prop shafts, driver-adjustable front/rear diff and bigger brakes. The suspension uses unique forged-aluminium lower links, rose-joined transverse links, inverted Bilstein dampers and Eibach springs, plus a fetching set of Gold 17-inch BBS alloy wheels.Theoretically Subaru were upholding their end of the Gentleman’s agreement between all Japanese car manufacturers including the likes of Toyota, Nissan, Subaru and Mitsubishi. The agreement was to limit all JDM production cars to 280bhp and 180km/h in order to reduce road fatalities. However, as so many have found since, cars such as the 22B, R34 GT-R, Evo VI and Supra all seem to produce comfortably more than the agreed 280bhp, so while the 22B is officially producing 276bhp, real world figures suggest the BHP readout comfortably starts with a 3!The car presented here a 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B-STI, car #318 of the 400 examples, is a matching-numbers example, imported into the UK by Litchfield Imports in 2004. After just 6 months of ownership, the first UK owner sold it to our vendor who has cherished and enjoyed the car for the next 18 years and this enthusiastic ownership is clearly evident from the car's superb condition. Our vendor bought the car back in 2004 and has routinely had the car serviced and maintained as and when required by Motor House Servicing, with a letter accompanying the history file verifying this work. The car was treated to a recent full service on 11/05/22. Within the history file there is the Bill of Sale from Subaru Crossroads Garage when our vendor purchased the car in 2004, at 13,000 miles meaning this 22B has averaged a mere 1,300miles per year for the last 18 years as it now shows 36,500(atoc).On file there is an invoice for the TSL 76mm full exhaust system costing £851.88 when fitted in 2004 with the original exhaust coming with the car. Unfortunately, due to a system error there is currently no paperwork from Motor House Servicing showing the invoices for maintenance/servicing, however the owner of said garage is happy to speak to any interested parties to verify its past. Accompanied by its original Subaru booklets from Japan and photos showing the car pre-import, this is a splendid example of an appreciating icon. With the ever-skyrocketing prices of the cream-of-the-crop JDM cars, this fabulously original 22B is a very reasonable way to ensure you have one of the greats.SpecificationMake: SUBARUModel: IMPREZA 22B-STIYear: 1998Chassis Number: GC8071359Registration Number: S55 WOWTransmission: ManualEngine Number: TBCDrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 36500 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Blue and Black ClothClick here for more details and images

Lot 447

Regarded as the ultimate Porsche Turbo; one of only 53 examples, UK-specification, just 25,000 miles and extremely original.First launched at the 1973 Paris Auto Show, with production commencing in 1975, the Porsche 911 (930) Turbo was a genuine Supercar which defined both the 1970s and 80s and was one of the fastest production cars available at that time. The basic engine underpinnings came from the Carrera 2.7RS which was increased to 3.0-litres (eventually 3.3-litres) and, of course, turbocharged with technology gleaned from Porsche's 917/30 Can-Am programme. The brakes were also derived directly from the 917. The bodywork received special treatment resulting in one of the most aggressive looking Porsches ever made with its wide arches and impressive rear 'Tea-tray' spoiler. In 1989, before production was discontinued, Porsche marked the occasion by creating a very special, right-hand drive, limited-edition 930 LE - the ultimate Turbo, produced as the last hurrah to a turbo charged era. Starting out as a standard 3.3-litre model, the cars were then sent to the exclusive team at Zuffenhausen who built each example by hand. With just 53 of these cars produced, one for each UK dealership in 1989, a host of bespoke no-cost options were offered including colour-coded wheels, top-tinted windscreen, a choice of colours for interior and exterior, rear-quarter air intake ducts, electric sunroof, heated multi-adjust electric seats, electric sunroof, and gold ‘Turbo’ lettering stitched behind the seat. They also came fitted with leather throughout, extending over the seats, dash, centre console and door trims. Topped-off with a 3-spoke steering wheel with a special Porsche crest badge in gold, a feature which is echoed on top of the gear knob, plus a gold plaque with ''911 Turbo, 1975-1989 Limited Edition Model'’ engraving - as recognition of the LE's place in Porsche 911 history.Further features include electrically adjustable Sports seats with heating, electric tilt and slide sunroof, climate control, Becker Mexico radio/ CD, rear wiper, and a 180-mph speedometer (Z order number 02061).On the outside, the LE cars are visually very striking, with the poster pin-up wide bodywork and big rear wing. The side intake strakes and deep front spoiler (with additional oil cooler) follow the styling of the Low-build (Flachbau) SE model; similarly, the LE utilises the 330bhp 3.3-litre engine of the SE, hence a larger turbo charger, higher lift camshafts, higher boost pressure, larger intercooler, and quad exhaust system. Featuring the G50 5 speed manual gearbox with short shift, and option M220 limited slip diff.At the time of production, Porsche had no plans to turbocharge the incoming 964, so it was believed that the LE would indeed be the final forced induction model to leave the Stuttgart factory. The price was an eye-watering £84,500, a full 50% more than the average house price at the time! This original, right-hand drive UK-specification (C16) Porsche 911 (930) Turbo Limited-Edition (LE) was sold new on the 1st August 1989 by JCT600 (Rawdon) Ltd. Official Porsche Centre of Newcastle upon Tyne and was believed to have been ordered by the then Chairman of Newcastle United Football Club, Sir John Hall. He had a preference for purchasing cars with a black and white interior, hence this LE is finished in its special Linen and Black leather. This combination perfectly complements the Grand Prix White paintwork and matching Fuchs alloys. This superbly preserved car has covered just 24,996 miles (atoc) from new, supported by an original stamped-up service booklet (a mixture of Porsche Centres and marque specialists), up until 23,505 miles. Subsequently it was serviced by the highly respected Hairpin Company when our vendor purchased it from them in 2020. The car is thought to retain its original paint, to have never been restored and is wholly original – it certainly retains that Porsche smell and the overall condition is truly commensurate with the low mileage indicated. The factory option sticker under the bonnet remains in place and shows all the options codes you would expect for its model type, including (139) heated seats, (220) limited slip differential, (XA4) front spoiler, (XB7) rear air-ducts, (XE7) front oil cooler, (XH1) 3-spoke steering wheel, (XK5) leather gear lever, and (XN7) leather handbrake. The car is accompanied by its compete book pack, numerous receipts for maintenance over the years, tool roll, jack, and a UK V5C. This rare Turbo LE was the culmination of the 930 Turbo's 14 years of production, and as a result, is probably the best-developed iteration of this model, making it highly collectable today. This is one of the best Turbo LEs we’ve had the pleasure of offering, and we urge you to come and see the car in the metal.SpecificationMake: PORSCHEModel: 911 930 TURBO LEYear: 1989Chassis Number: WP0ZZZ93ZKS000750Registration Number: G656 RTYTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 67K01008 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 24000 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Linen / Black leatherClick here for more details and images

This amazing P1 Impreza has been extensively and meticulously restored by a former Prodrive employee. This amazing P1 Impreza has been extensively and meticulously restored to its original factory specification. The car was restored over a five-year period by a former employee of Prodrive who worked at the well-known Banbury base from 1999 to 2015. A comprehensive report by the former head of the Subaru Rally Team forms part of the history file and gives an independent description and analysis of the restoration and the level of detail involved in getting the car as close to the original specification as possible. This report includes a considerable number of photographs taken during the restoration and includes the finer detail, such as acid-dipping the nuts and bolts, prior to painting and re-fitting.For the engine restoration/rebuild, all the aluminium housings were vapour blasted to the original specification colour scheme and the silencer exterior heat pads were also replaced. The suspension was rebuilt with an STi Group N bushing kit, Zinc primer was added to the coating of the suspension components to aid longevity, and again all the aluminium parts were vapour-blasted. The Alcon Prodrive rear caliper housings were zinc-plated prior to enamelling, further demonstrating the level of attention this car has enjoyed. The genuine outer quarter panels fitted to both sides were glued at the lower seam, unlike the factory spot weld, which is a modern corrosion prevention technique. Genuine rear arches were sourced from the USA as they are no longer available in Europe and both sides were fitted with new inner arches. All the shell panels were treated with etch-primer prior to application of original-specification 74F Blue Cellulose paint (water base not used). The restorer's market research suggests that extensive corrosion protection after painting is the best inhibitor. The boot was painted in base coat and lacquer, however, limited paint and primer were used on these areas as they were contributing to corrosion issues when built at the factory originally. The sill inspection covers were re-sealed as per factory standard. New fuel-filler pipes were zinc-plated then enamelled (factory spec was zinc only which was a common rust area) and new OE-spec fog lights were fitted. As you can imagine with the attention to detail on this rebuild, all brackets, nuts, bolts and washers were acid dipped and re-plated prior to painting or re-fitting, a process that is far superior to the factory procedures. The wheels now fitted to this particular car are the 18-inch gold alloys that were an optional extra detailed in the original P1 Extras Booklet and not the standard 17-inch, titanium-finish alloys, whilst the rear silencer is also the P1-spec unit. The most recent work was carried out during July 2022 by Venture Engineering meaning this superb example is ready for its next lucky owner. This Impreza P1 represents an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire a car that’s been restored with well over 1,000 hours of love and care and extensive in-house knowledge of the P1 model and its potential pitfalls. SpecificationMake: SUBARUModel: P1Year: 2000Chassis Number: JF1GM8KDGYG003289Registration Number: X208 NBWEngine Number: 885011Drive Side: Right-hand DriveClick here for more details and images

The ex-Richard Burns/Robert Reid rally car, used in Monte Carlo and Sweden during their Championship-winning 2001 season. On offer from 15-years private ownership and fresh from a sympathetic restoration retaining its original bodyshell and engine.Following the disappointment of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in the 2000 WRC Championship, 2001 was a year of redemption for the late Richard Burns and Robert Reid who finally achieved their first, and only, championship winning season. It was very tightly contested, and by no means a walkover, especially when their competition was arguably the greatest selection of rally drivers in history, including the late Colin McRae, Tommi Makinen and defending champion Marcus Gronholm, yet it was Burns in the S7 Impreza that took the drivers championship home that year with Peugeot retaining the Manufacturer's title. When we say this season was close, the top 3 drivers were separated by just 3 points by the end of the season! For the 2001 World Rally Championship, Subaru nominated Petter Solberg and Richard Burns as their driver lineup, with Marko Martin and Toshi Arai competing in selected events. Their WRC 2001 Car featured an all-new look, based on the new Impreza WRX GD chassis, popularly known as the Bugeye. Along with the new body, the car featured revised aerodynamics, improved weight distribution and importantly, a lower centre of gravity and naturally mechanical developments continued apace. Synonymous with Rallying success, these World Rally cars were built, prepared and run by British motorsport team, Prodrive.Held over 14 rounds, the 2001 World Rally Championship effectively covered ever corner of the globe, from the infamous Monte Carlo, to Australia, Argentina, Sweden and the Safari rally in Africa. During the course of the season, the WRC 2001 secured seven podium finishes, with Richard Burns claiming the World Rally Drivers Championship, beating four-time champion Tommi Makinen, double-champion Marcus Gronholm, and 1995 champion Colin McRae!This Subaru Impreza WRC 2001, PR WRC 01 008 was built during January 2001 and registered as X2 SRT for Richard Burns to drive in the Monte Carlo Rally 2001, Start No 5. It then went on to be driven by Richard again for a second time in Rally Sweden 2001 and the car's final outing that year was Rally Portugal 2001 with Toshi Arai at the wheel. The car then went to America and, registered as S200 USA, went on to win the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally (STPR) and Rim of the World rallies. It then returned to Prodrive around September 2001 and was registered as X8 SRT, which it retains today, and was immediately shipped down under for Toshi Arai in the Australian Rally 2001 and returned home for its final outing that year, Rally GB 2001 driven by Neil Weardon. X8 SRT was then not campaigned until 2004 when RED Motorsport hired out the car for a couple of rallies before selling it on to David Turnbull. David competed in the car successfully in the UK and Europe run by ATM Engineering from Selby, North Yorkshire and, in 2008, the Subaru was sold to its current owner but remained in the care of ATM Engineering. There was no peace for the wicked and it continued to compete up until 2015 in a selection of rallies including Rally Barbados, as well as many UK and European based races. Needless to say, the car was run with no expense spared and collected a plethora of silverware with 121 stage victories and 9 overall victories to date.In 2020, ATM Engineering began a full restoration of X8 SRT. The shell was blasted and had a full repaint whilst the very tricky to find, original aluminium panels were sourced for the rebuild and many original Prodrive parts that had been removed over the years such as the Carbon seats that Richard Burns used and a one-off carbon map book holder that was commissioned by Robert Reid, Richard's navigator were re-fitted. The period-correct 2001 livery was applied to the car by an ex-employee of Prodrive that had applied the vinyl for the cars in the first place. The original engine that was used by Richard remains fitted and that was fully rebuilt by marque expert, Graham Sweet, with less than 100 stage miles since. The rebuild was completed to a stunning standard in April 2021 and there is a Letter of Authenticity supplied by Prodrive confirming its history alongside its original Gold FIA Passport. An unequivocally impressive piece of machinery as a stand-alone car, but to have contributed to the great Richard Burns’ Championship winning year rightfully puts this car into a special place in many people’s hearts. A real collector's item - special provenance but retaining the ability to continue to be used for what it was originally designed to do.SpecificationMake: SUBARUModel: IMPREZA WRCYear: 2001Chassis Number: PR0WRC01008Registration Number: X8 SRTTransmission: SequentialEngine Number: 01ST10ZDrive Side: Left-hand DriveMake: LHDInterior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images

#68/100, this meticulously restored example is surely the finest JPS to come to market in recent years.Technically called the World Championship Commemorative Model, but more colloquially known as the John Player Special, this was the first and arguably the most memorable limited edition Esprit from Lotus. Dubbed the JPS due to its distinctive black and gold livery, inspired by the ground effect, JPS-sponsored, championship-winning Lotus 79 cars of the period, as raced by Mario Andretti and Ronnie Petersen. Originally planned to build 200 examples, it was believed that just 185 were produced, 100 for the UK, 55 for the United States and 30 for Europe. The eye-catching specification included gold-coloured side-stripes complete with World Champion lettering, gold-coloured front and rear windscreen surrounds and alloy wheels, gold-effect corduroy seat inserts and a three-spoke leather rimmed steering wheel instead of the normal plastic offering. The 'Juke Box' installed was a Hitachi Digi-One radio-cassette. The 1973cc, 16-valve DOHC engine delivered a feisty 160bhp which was sufficient to sprint the 1,980lb glass fibre-bodied, two-seater to 60mph in 6.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 124 mph. The short production run lasted from December 1978 to July 1979.This immaculate example is Number 68, however, as we understand and know Lotus from that period, it is unknown what number it was in the production line. Our vendor confessed to getting somewhat carried away with the restoration, and as part of the process, #68 had a full body-off, glass-out restoration, including a respray and new stickers to ensure no stone was unturned and the car would be as good as new, if not better, which we feel he’s achieved by some distance. A number of top specialists have been involved in the car's transformation and the results are very impressive with a fabulous level of finish yet maintaining the character of the car, which is no easy feat! The restoration catalogue is fantastic, featuring new aluminium fuel tanks, brake line hoses, new aluminium radiator, new coolant hoses, Wilwood front callipers and disks (originals to go with the car) and new suspension and bushes all round. The engine was overhauled including new liners, crank reground and new pistons circa 2000 miles ago and a stainless-steel exhaust system including 4 into 1 manifold fitted to help it sing. The list goes on, making for pleasant reading and an even more pleasant driving experience. The history file is nicely detailed and contains dozens of old invoices and MOTs. Superbly presented and indicating only 72,746 miles, this is an exceptionally high-quality example that would cost a small fortune to replicate. With the combination of comfortable mileage and the quality of restoration, this very special Lotus would sit equally as perfectly in the hands of a collector as it would in the hands of an enthusiast wanting to get out and drive it.With Lotus cars of the future destined to have electric hearts, there cannot be a better time to pick up the old-school and experience the cars that made the David and Goliath brand from Norwich withstand the test of time with such flying colours.SpecificationMake: LOTUSModel: ESPRIT S2 JPSYear: 1979Chassis Number: 79020661GRegistration Number: TOI 9585Transmission: ManualEngine Number: CC907790216073 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 72746 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Black and CreamClick here for more details and images
