*Reeve (Richard Gilson, 1803-1889). The West Keal Ox, Winner of the II Class Premium of Twenty Sovereigns & Silver Medal to the Breeder; Also the Gold Medal for the best Beast exhibited in any of the cattle classes at Smithfield 1832..., circa 1833, aquatint with contemporary hand colouring, several repaired closed tears with some affecting image, slight abrasion causing loss to letters, 480 x 595 mm, mounted, framed and glazed Rothamsted Collection number 53A. *McClure (Robert, 1807-1873). Autograph letter signed, 'Robt. McClure', Ballyleek House, near Monaghan, 11 December 1854, to Mr McNamara, apologising profusely for the long delay in answering his letter, 'I had so many friends to see and their society after my long and dreary incarceration left me little time for even answering an old messmates letter and one whom I always entertained a deep regard for though so many years have elapsed since we took a cup of tea together. I think you and Mrs McNamara lived then at Southsea near the Common', referring to his health then and now and thanking them both for 'your congratulation on my successful trip and fortunate termination. The Adm[iral]ty have behaved very kindly in giving me time and [?] besides a handsome gold chron[omo]ter with a suitable inscription which is exceedingly flattering. I do not know if I shall get anything more', 4 pages, mild creasing and old album adhesion mark at head of first page not affecting text, 8vo Robert McClure and his crew were the first both to circumnavigate the Americas, and to transit the Northwest Passage. However, on his return to England, in 1854, he was court-martialled for the loss of HMS Investigator. Following an honourable acquittal, McClure was knighted and promoted to post-rank, his commission being dated back four years in recognition of his special services. With his crew he shared a monetary reward of #10,000, given by Parliament. (1)
*Mannes-Abbott (Sheila (1939-2014)). A stoat amongst autumn vegetation, watercolour, depicting a mass of intertwining foliage, including blackberries, bindweed, hips and haws, seed heads, and a peacock butterfly, with a stoat on hind legs peeping through, signed lower left on a plant stem, 38.5 x 32cm (15.25 x 12.75ins), mounted, framed and glazed Botanical artist Sheila Mannes-Abbott showed early talent, and was awarded a scholarship at the age of 13 to the Ealing School of Art for a portfolio of flower paintings. Early in her career, Sheila was encouraged by author and artist Wilfrid Blunt (1901-1987), who was impressed by her eye for detail, and compared her work to the great botanical artists Franz and Ferdinand Bauer, and Pierre Joseph Redout‚. Sheila lectured on botanical painting, and was a founder member of the Society of Botanical Artists. In 2000 she was elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London and during her career was awarded several RHS medals, three of them gold. Her work has appeared in a number of publications, including 'Curtis's Botanical Magazine'. Her paintings are found in a number of important collections, including the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, the Royal Horticultural Society's Lindley Library, and the library at Kew Gardens. Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Constable, 1920, six tipped-in colour plates, 32 tipped-in black & white plates (many heightened with colour, some with gold), letterpress illustrations, endpapers toned and spotted, front pastedown with pictorial bookplate of Drusilla & Colin White, top edge gilt, remainder untrimmed, original green cloth, lightly dust-soiled, spine (toned) and upper cover gilt lettered, rear cover upper outer corner slightly bumped and marked, folio Limited edition, 25/100 copies, signed by Ronald Balfour. Kieffer (Ren‚, binder). Original illustrated manuscript by Henri Caruchet (1873-1948), for Le Pavillon Sur L'Eau, written by Th‚ophile Gautier and published in Paris by A. Ferroud, 1900, 48 pen, ink, and watercolour leaves, comprising a fly-leaf with vignette, a leaf lettered 'Pr‚face', and 46 numbered leaves written in calligraphic manuscript within elaborate borders depicting Chinese figures, animals and birds, buildings, dragons, floral motifs, etc., pencil markings to aid design and publication visible, preceded by three printed leaves (original front wrapper, half-title, and title-page), some spotting and marks throughout, sheet size 32 x 24cm (12.5 x 9.65ins), all edges gilt, contemporary brown morocco by Ren‚ Kieffer, signed on front doublure, a little rubbed to extremities, faded spine gilt lettered between two pairs of raised bands, and with leather onlay of bamboo leaves, upper cover with all-over onlaid design of bamboo trees, with smaller similar design on rear cover, triple gilt fillets on turn-ins, morocco pastedowns with onlaid design of stylised water lilies on a grey ground, free endpapers of gold and pale turquoise floral silk brocade, large square 4to, contained in marbled slipcase (worn) Painter and poet Henri Caruchet illustrated a number of books in the Art Nouveau style. His original artwork rarely comes onto the market. These beautiful illustrations, which make use of oriental imagery, show few deviations from the work as it was published, although the artist's calligraphic text was substituted for letterpress. The addition of a sumptuous Kieffer binding makes this a particularly attractive and unusual item. (1)

Lodge and others, 7 maps (5 folding), top edges gilt, others untrimmed, original blue cloth, dust jackets (repairs versos), large 8vo Nissen IVB 73 (miscounting the plates); Wood p. 220 (volume 1 only: 'This treatise describes and pictures in admirable fashion the birds of [the] region'). Uncommon with the dust jackets. A printed notice on the front pastedown of each volume declares that 'An insecticidal solution has been used in the binding of this book'; many sets are likely to have suffered from usage in the inhospitable climate of the area discussed.
