English School, 16th Century/Portrait of a Nobleman/possibly Sir Henry Bedingfeld of Oxburgh Hall, Norfolk/half-length, wearing a black doublet and fur trimmed coat, a jewelled black cap and ornate gold chains suspending a seal fob/inscribed upper left An Dn 1566 and upper right Aeta Sua 51/oil on panel, 45.5cm x 31cm, laid on a modern linen backed wood panel/Provenance: from the collection of Harry Wolton QC/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: There is a little chipping in in places and blisters in the paint work that will need addressing, two small splits in oil, image detail very good. The painting has been re laid to a modern board. The attribution to Sir Henry Bedingfeld has been made owing to the remarkable likeness to a later known portrait; noting in particular the characteristics of the eyes, nose and ears. The picture could possibly be attributed to Steven van der Meulen/literature see STRONG, The English Icon, Elizabethan and Jacobean Portraits 1968, page 127

She is credited with the introduction of the essence of bitter oranges as a fashionable fragrance/Provenance: Purchased by George Villiers while Ambassador in Madrid in the 1830s and thence by decent until purchased at Sotheby's Lot 239 December 2010/Literature: Lady Theresa Lewis, Lives of the Friends and Contemporaries of Lord Chancellor Clarendon, vol. III, London 1852, pp. 398-9;R. Gibson, Catalogue of Portraits in the Collection of the Earl of Clarendon, London 1977, p. 123/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: The current vendor purchased this painting at Sotheby's in 2010. Since that time it has undergone some restoration and re-touching to the face and headdress are visible under UV. The frame has a couple of cracks and re-touching to the gold surface, but overall it is in ready-to-hang condition.

A Victorian gold locket inscribed Kildonan, the reverse with glazed panel containing a photograph, 3cm diameter, in fitted case/Note: A note with the lot reads 'Locket made of Gold from the Duke of Sutherland's Mine at Kildonan (near Dunrobin) Sutherlandshire. Given to Louisa Blanche Howard (Mrs Cecil Foljambe) July 1869 by Charlotte Duchess of Norfolk who was daughter of the 1st Duke of Sutherland and Elizabeth Countess of Sutherland'. The Kildonan Gold Rush was a short lived affair from 1869-1870 which was ended by the Duke of Sutherland owing to a clash of interests with deer stalking/Provenance: From the collection of the Earl of Liverpool/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: Approximately 10gm. Box externally clean but some bloom visible to interior, it has been a bit damp at some point. Locket has faint split to seam on one side near the K of Kildonan. There is a more significant split with opening near the N of Kildonan. There is a crack to the glass. The locket is not hallmarked and I cannot see a way to testing it without causing damage.
