Featuring a circular inkwell with a pique work tortoiseshell lid, with an approximate diameter of 14.5cm at the base, and engraved with a Latin motto "Nec temere nec timide" - which translates as "Neither rashley nor timidly" - alongsidean heraldic crest featuring a griffin, hallmarked Birmingham, 1911. Also to include an off-centre circular inkwell, with two pen rest ledges, approximate base diameter 13.6cm, marked for John Collard Vickery, Birmingham 1929; a circular roll lid inkwell, approximate diameter 7.5cm, marked for William Hutton & Sons Ltd, Sheffield, 1920; a small sterling silver hinge top inkwell, marked for W J Myatt & Co Ltd, Birmingham, 1920, approximate base diameter 6.9cm.

An Arculus small glass inkwell of footed domed form, internally decorated to the base with a central complex millefiori cane in red and white, surrounded by four concentric circles of complex millefiori canes in red, blue, purple and yellow, complete with mushroom stopper in the matching decoration, height 9cm.

Their two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Hayward (1906-1976) and Harriet Taft Hayward (1907-1968), lived at Oakwald, Franklin, Massachusetts and were both painted by the artist Sir John Lavery (1856 - 1941); see Christie's, The Scottish Sale at The Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, 6975, 28th October 2004, Lot 152. Berlin KPM porcelain ink or desk standwith one accompanying inkwell, decorated with various birds amongst leaves and gilt painted detail, eagle and sceptre mark to the edge of the stand, 29cm x 4cm high and eagle and sceptre mark to the base of the inkwell, 7cm high (2) The inkwell lid is chipped. Gilt decoation is worn throughout to both. Signs of wear and use with some scratches evident.
