An Art Nouveau grotesque bird form pewter inkwell, trifid webbed feet, glass liner. CONDITION REPORT:- 11 CM TALL Overall pewter work is good and well patinated. 3 lines of cleaner pewter to the 3 flatter sides at the seams- feet intact with no signs of repair. Glass internal body has a slight crack running 2cm down from the hinge- not visible externally and only just visible in the right light! The ink well itself has rim chips as imaged
A Weymss ware pottery heart shaped desk stand, decorated with black cockerels and chickens and with green painted rim, the two inkwell recesses containing one part glass inkwell and two Wemyss pottery covers, 18 cm wide CONDITION REPORTS Very dirty with a large amount of crazing to the inkwell lids and discolouration, and undersides of lids are very ink stained and both have chips to undersides. One liner is very damaged and has losses, and the other is missing. The base has crazing and ink stains to the edges, and some inks stains to the interior. The sides have some small areas of crazing and slight discolouration in patches on the sides, but possibly about 10%. Underneath there are clear signs of ink staining and some crazing. One of the ink wells apertures - one side has a small chip to edge and small crack approx 0.5cm long. The edges of the base - there is some flaking to the glazing along the bottom edge.

Local Interest - an early 19th century pewter circular inkwell, reputedly given by Florence Nightingale OM (1820-1910) to her maid Jane Brocklehurst, of Lea, Derbyshire, with whom long in service, hinged dome cover lifting to reveal a glass well, five pierced apertures for quills or pens, 12cm diam; an associated Victorian leather-bound photograph album, 32pp mounted with 35 albumen photographic prints mainly shaped quarter-plate sized, depicting Embley Park, house, gardens, park, lodges, gates and estate houses, with several family groups including recipeint posed with her mother and W. Shore Nightingale, also Florence Nightingale with her sister, also Wellow School under construction (thus 1876), St. Margaret's Church, Wellow (where Florence is buried), Broadlands from the lake and of Romsey Abbey, Hampshire, all c. 1870s, the flyleaf inscribed in ms. M G Bratby/Decr 1876/from B L, and first page 'Born Feb 4th 1794/Died Jany 5th 1874, the album 25.5cm x 18.5cm overall, with a typed copy of Mrs. Brocklehurst's obituary and some grave inscriptions. Jane (Ann) Lock was baptised St. James's Piccadilly, in 1829, and entered service with the Shore Nightingale family of Lea, Derbyshire, and Embley Park, Hampshire in her teens and remained with the family, latterly in Derbyshire until her death at Fishpond Farm, Lea, in 1917. She married William Brocklehurst of Winster, later the Lea estate foreman, and had two sons and a daughter. Provenance: By repute, Florence Nightingale OM; presented to Jane Brocklehurst (née Lock) and thence by direct descent to the present vendor. Mrs. Brocklechurst said the inkwell was that taken by Miss Nightinghale to Crimean War. Condition Report: Inkwell lid detached. Some photographs in album spotted.
