A COPPER ALLOY 'DRAGON AND LINGZHI' TRAVEL WRITING SET, 17TH-18TH CENTURYChina. The shaft containing a brush and decorated to each side with a sinuous dragon in high relief, separated by swirling clouds in low relief, one end with a key-fret border and the other with an aperture for suspension. The inkwell neatly incised with a wave pattern and decorated with lingzhi to the backside and on the hinged cover. The underside of the inkwell with a four-character mark within a reserve.Expert's note: The present portable writing set has the form of a yatate, a type of small personal smoking-pipe-shaped writing set from medieval Japan which provided a carrying box for the ink cotton, and a shaft for a brush. However, the Chinese mark and manner of decoration with lingzhi, dragons, and keyfret strongly indicate that this piece was either made by Chinese artisans or possibly manufactured in Japan for the Chinese market.Inscriptions: To the base of the inkwell, 'Yuegui Zhai'.Provenance: The Strong National Museum of Play, accession number 75.53.80 (lacquered to base of inkwell). Margaret Woodbury Strong (1897-1969) grew up in a prosperous family of collectors. Her interests ranged so widely that by 1960 she had amassed more than 27,000 collectible items and works of art. The vast majority of her collections related in some way to play and as her accumulation grew, Margaret planned a museum to house her collection. It eventually opened to the public in 1982, and grew dramatically over the following decades, expanding its collections, facilities, and resources, now spanning over 285,000 square feet. Today, the Strong National Museum of Play (known as just The Strong Museum or simply The Strong) is the only collections-based museum in the world devoted solely to the study of play. A PALE CELADON JADE INKSTONE WITH MATCHING ZITAN STAND AND COVER, QING DYNASTYChina, 18th-19th century. The well-polished stone is of a rounded rectangular shape, surrounded by a thick border, the surface slightly depressing towards the center, and the top with a deeply recessed oval well. The Zitan wood stand and cover are finely carved in the form of a melon with trailing vines, leaves, and an additional smaller fruit. The translucent stone is of a milky-white tone with shades of pale celadon, icy inclusions and few russet veins. (3)Provenance: British trade. Condition: Very good condition with minor old wear. The stone with natural inclusions and fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks over time, as well as minuscule nicks here and there. The stand and lid with fine natural age-cracks, minor nicks here and there. A YELLOW AND RUSSET JADE 'RABBIT' INKSTONE, EARLY QING DYNASTYOpinion: Inkstones depicting various animals were made during the Qing dynasty, including pieces of the highest quality made for the Qing court. The present inkstone, being of an abstracted form that still clearly shows the silhouette of a rabbit, with a circular recess (perhaps reminiscent of the moon, with which the rabbit is frequently associated in China) placed exactly where the hare's eye would be, is a unique and rare example of this group.China, late 17th - 18th century. Well carved as the silhouette of a rabbit with distinct nose and ears, a circular recess carved in place of the animal's eye serving as the inkwell. The translucent stone is of a fine and distinct yellow tone with russet and black patches as well as cloudy white inclusions.Provenance: French trade. Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear and signs of use including small nicks, light surface scratches, remnants of ink inside the inkwell. Bolognese school of the mid-18th century."Reliquary of Saint Catherine of Siena".Gilded and polychrome wood. Some of the objects in solid silver.There is a restored break in the top of the urn. The urn is damaged.Measurements: 50 x 35 x 28 cm.Large Bolognese Baroque reliquary of Saint Catherine of Siena from the mid-18th century. This rare object of devotion comes, after several generations, from an Italian family from Bologna deeply devoted to the saint, who came into possession of the precious relic in the 18th century and decided to have a showcase built with the diorama of the saint's room in Siena in order to preserve it. The showcase, in the Bolognese Baroque style, is made of carved and gilded wood and ends with a niche containing, in a crown of lilies, a hair of Saint Catherine of Siena closed by the papal seal. The scroll above the relic reads: "Capelo di S. Catera". Inside the showcase there is a table and a chair, as well as some objects related to the saint, such as the crucifix, the book and the inkwell, the oil lamp and the ointments she used when she went to visit the sick. Some of these objects are made of solid silver. Catherine Benincasa (Italian: Caterina Benincasa), in religion Catherine of Siena was born on 25 March 1347 in Siena, Tuscany, and died on 29 April 1380 at the age of 33 in Rome. She was a Dominican mystic tertiary who had a great influence on the Catholic Church. She was declared a saint and Doctor of the Church on 29 June 1461. The piece is in a good state of conservation, with small losses and old restorations to the window, but the original gilding has been preserved.

Provenance: By descent from Douglas Shepherd (1922-1989), a designer and architect working on public houses for the brewery firm Ind Coope. He was heavily influenced by and was a serious collector of Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau, including leading designers and artists such as Charles Ashlee and Jessie M King. He assembled a large collection from the 1950s to 1970s. His book collection was subsequently sold through Sotherby’s and in 2013 his magnificent silver collection by Archibald Knox and others was sold through these rooms.Very good condition, small chip to glass on underside. Late 19th/early 20th century Chinese silver inkwell, of cylindrical form, with engraved presentation inscription and bamboo decoration, hinged cover with dragon finial, on three dragon feet. Underside with Chinese character mark and stamped WH90 (Wang Hing). All at approximately 4ozs. 7.5cm overall height.Inscription worn. Slightly pushed in on one foot. Otherwise appears good.

A Japanese silver double inkwell by Arthur Bond, Yokohama, c.1900, embossed and pierced with irises, 14cm wide**CONDITION REPORT**Several dents around the top rim of the base. Small dent to the cover of one of the inkwells. Some mild wear to the decoration in places.
