'The results of the voyage, remarkable for the length of time spent in the ice, were the survey of the Boothia peninsula, of a great part of King William Land, and of the Gulf of Boothia; the presumptive determination that the sought-for passage did not lie in that direction; and the discovery of the magnetic pole by James Clark Ross. In 1834 Ross was knighted; the geographical societies of London and Paris awarded him their gold medals, and on 24th December 1834 he was nominated a CB' (ODNB).
An interesting Worcester teabowl, circa 1770, and its prototype Chinese export saucer, Qianlong, circa 1750 The teabowl and Chinese saucer pencilled in black with the 'Provender for the Monastery', depicting a monk smuggling a lady into a monastery, the woman concealed in a large bundle of wheat carried on the pious man's back, with gilt lambrequin borders, saucer 12cm diam, together with a curious Worcester saucer painted in Dutch-decorated Chinese style, elaborate stylised floral motifs picked out in red, green and gold below a gilt lambrequin border, 12.2cm diam (3) Footnotes: Provenance Zorensky Collection, Bonhams, 16 March 2004, lot 80 (teabowl and Chinese saucer) and lot 86 (Worcester saucer) With Roderick Jellicoe A satirical, anti-Catholic mezzotint of the 'Provision for the Convent' is in the Collection of the British Museum (inv. no.2010,7081.3148). Presumably a similar print was sent to China, where the order for anti-Jacobite wares for the export market was fulfilled. The teabowl is the only known example of its type produced at Worcester.
