Cotes, Duchess of Hamilton, black and white engraving, 170 x 140mm(2)The Gunning sisters Elizabeth (1734 - 1790) and Maria (1733 - 1760) daughters of John Gunning of Castlecoote Co. Roscommon took England by storm, such were their striking features and personalities. They married into the top rank of aristocracy, Elizabeth marrying two Dukes. In the present mezzotint she is still designated ‘Hamilton’ which dates it prior to the Dukes death in 1758. Her sons became the 7th and 8th Dukes of Hamilton. She married the 5th Duke of Argyll in 1759 and was created a peeress in her right. Her son became the 6th Duke of Argyll. Maria married the 7th Earl of Coventry of Croome Court. Her son became the 8th Earl of Coventry.

Louis Busiere (French, 1880-1960): after John Downman (Welsh, 1750-1824): a portrait of a lady, in white cap and ruffled collar, hand coloured mezzotint, the artist signed to the plate and dated 1792, the engraver signed in pencil to the lower margin, with framer's label verso, 25 by 20cm, in an ornate gilt frame with oval window, 37 by 33cm.Provenance: The Private Lincolnshire Estate of a Danish Family.

Ireland.- Siege of Londonderry.- Walker (George) A Vindication of the True Account of the Siege of Derry in Ireland, engraved mezzotint portrait frontispiece, ?lacking final blank, modern half calf, gilt, [Wing W354], 4to, for Rob. Clavel, 1689.⁂ Rare with the frontispiece, we can trace no other like copy.
Quaker.- Preston (Thomas, fl. 1740-1785) Portrait of James Naylor, looking to the right, wearing broad-rimmed hat, mezzotint with engraving, on laid paper without watermark, sheet 240 x 160 mm. (9 1/2 x 6 1/4 in), handling creases, minor surface dirt, [circa 1660]; together with William Richardson's 'Titus Oates', 1810, and a variant copy of Gillray's 'Political-Candour' [cf. BM Satires 10414], 215 x 170 mm. (8 1/2 x 6 3/4 in), all unframed, (3).Provenance:Denstone College Library (stamps verso)Literature:(Naylor) Chaloner Smith 3⁂ Naylor, an English Quaker leader, was among the members of the Valiant Sixty, a group of early Quaker preachers and missionaries. In 1656, he achieved national notoriety when he re-enacted Christ's Palm Sunday entry into Jerusalem by entering Bristol on a horse. He was imprisoned and charged with blasphemy.

Cantemir (Demetrius). The History of the Growth and Decay of the Othman Empire, 1st English edition, 2 parts in one, James, John, and Paul Knapton, 1734-35, mezzotint portrait frontispiece, 4-page list of subscribers, 460 pages of main text, including Life of Cantemir at end, folding engraved plan of Constantinople (one or two short closed tears, generally in very good condition), 22 engraved portraits of Turkish Emperors, contemporary gilt and blind-panelled full calf, rubbed and scuffed, and some wear to joints and edges (joints partly cracked), folio (35 x 23 cm, 13.75 x 9 ins) Atabey 190. Blackmer 281. The most important early history of the Ottoman Empire, translated by Nicholas Tindal from Cantemir's latin manuscript. The fine engraved portraits of Turkish emperors are all engraved by Claude du Bosc (1682-1746 or later). A good, clean copy.
