Continental School, 19th c., probably after an 18th c. miniature, "Soldier of the Marigny de Mandeville Family, Either Francois-Philippe (1680-1728) or His Son, Antoine Philippe (1722-1779)", oil on canvas, unsigned, "Louisiana State Museum" label en verso, 36 in. x 29 in., antique frame. Provenance: Gaspar Cusachs, entrepreneur, historian and collector, (1855-1929); The Gaspar Cusachs Collection, loaned to the Louisiana State Museum, New Orleans, LA (c. 1909-2016). Ill.: Harter, John Burton and Mary Louise Tucker. The Louisiana Portrait Gallery, Volume 1 to 1870. New Orleans: Louisiana State Museum, 1979, pp. 40-41. Note: This handsome image is a copy on canvas of an untraced engraving, mezzotint, or portrait miniature, possibly executed before 1728, or in 1763, when its possible sitters were probably in France. The first specific record of this present painting is an early albumin carte-de-visite photograph, made in August 1883 by the New Orleans author/journalist Edward Clifton Wharton (1827-1891), for this portrait’s owner, Mme. Gustave de Marigny [née Bienvenue], the daughter-in-law of Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville. As noted on the carte-de-visite, this sitter was “either the father or the grandfather of Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville [1785-1868]”. Although in all likelihood, Mme. Gustave de Marigny meant the grandfather or great-grandfather of Bernard Xavier Philippe de Mandeville. Bernard’s “father” would have been Pierre-Philippe Enguerrand de Marigny de Mandeville (1751-1800), while his “grandfather” would have been Antoine-Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville (1722-1779), who was born in Mobile while his own father, Francois-Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville (1680-1728) was in colonial service. Antoine-Philippe was married in New Orleans in 1748, and is successively described as a “Lieutenant of Colonial Troops” in the New Orleans 1762 power of attorney to his wife, preceding his voyage to France. He was also described as “Capitaine de l’infanterie au service de France” on his tombstone, where both he and his father are named as “chevalier[s] de l’ordre royale et militaire de Saint-Louis,” the decoration displayed on this breastplate. Since the highly accurate depiction of this armor is datable to the early 18th c. or just possibly, in retrospect, to 1763, it is likely that the compilers of the 1979 Cabildo catalogue [cited above] were at least partly correct—that this portrait represents either Antoine-Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville, or his father, Francois-Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville.Ref.: The Historic New Orleans Collection (acc. no. 58-101-L.3, MSS 216.37, Folder 37).

JOHN RAPHAEL SMITH (ENGLISH, 1751-1812)Portrait of Walter Fawkes sitting in his study at Farnley Hall, YorkshireOil on canvas26 x 19 inches (66 x 48 cm.)John Raphael Smith (1751-1812) was a portrait and genre painter, working with oil paint and pastel. He exhibited works at The Royal Academy from 1779 to 1790. Examples of his works can be seen at The National Portrait Gallery, London. The Ferens Gallery, Hull and The Usher Art Gallery, Lincoln. He was his most important patron and probably his closest friend. Turner visited Farnley Hall on many occasions, sometimes staying for months at a time. At one time the collection of TurnerÍs work, in oil and watercolour, numbered over two hundred pictures. Over the years many of these have pictures have been sold from the collection. These can be seen today in many of the important art galleries of England and America. After the death of Walter Fawkes in 1825, Turner never returned to Farnley Hall.

John Lucas (British, 1807-1874) Portrait of Captain Sir William Peel, VC, (1824-1858), half-length, in black oil on canvas, oval - sold with a mezzotint engraving of the Sitter with a sword, signed lower left "John Lucas" and "J J Chant", 90 x 66cm (35.5 x 26in) (2) 72 x 60cm (28 x 23in) Provenance: Sir Mervyn Peel (1856-1929) and by descent. Exhibited: London, Earl's Court 'The Victorian Era Exhibition' 1897, Historical and Commemorative Section, No. 1 (old exhibition label refers). Other Notes: Captain Sir William Peel (1824-1858), was one of the great British naval heroes - a British Naval Officer and recipient of the Victoria Cross, effectively three times over, in the Crimean War. He was the third son of the great Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel and, like his father, went to Harrow. He entered the Navy at the age of 14. He was a Commander of the Naval Brigade in the Crimean War. In 1854 at the Siege of Sebastopol, he and his Brigade were charged with the task of supplying ammunition to the artillery when a Russian shell, fuse still alight, landed among them and their explosives. Whilst others ran, Peel picked up the shell and threw it over the parapet. The shell burst as it left his hands. A month later at the Battle of Inkerman, Peel noticed a platoon was in grave danger of being cut off and surrounded by Russian forces. He braved a heavy barrage to lead the platoon to safety. In the following year, Peel led his troops over a ridge putting himself in the line of fire. He was shot and seriously injured. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for all of these immense acts of bravery, one of the earliest officers to be awarded the Victoria Cross during the Crimean War. Sir William had estates in Sandy, Bedfordshire, which he bought with a legacy from his father's death in 1850, and he decided to build the Sandy to Potton railway in 1857. Sadly the Sandy-Potton Light Railway only lasted from 1857-1861; Sir William named one of the engines "Shannon" after his frigate. The locomotive "Shannon" (GWR Railway Museum) and its engine shed still survive. Captain Sir William Peel was later sent to India and was wounded again at the Relief of Lucknow. He died in India from smallpox aged 34. There are three statues of the great Victoria Cross holder - all by William Theed the Younger (British, 1804-1891) - they are at the Maritime Museum (1860); Sandy Church, Bedfordshire (1861); and at Flagstaff House in Barrackpore, India (1863). Sir William Peel's home was The Lodge in Sandy, Bedfordshire, now the home of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Oil Portrait - Longish scratch lower right. Dirt under the glass. Not examined outside the frame. The wooden plate with artist's name and title loose on one side. Frame slightly chipped, especially along the top edge. The print is foxed. Foxing mostly to the margins, slight discoloration and spotting to the sky upper left.
